We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!
                                                   - Less Info
We haven't selected a daily winner yet. The first person to answer correctly will get to pick a Road Trips of their choice. To get started, login or register using the form above.
We haven't selected a winner for the week of 11/22 yet!

I'm thinking it has to do

I'm thinking it has to do with bandwidth management, since the plan was to take the files down anyway. Even if I still had my hosting account, posting files of this since would put me over quota in a hurry.

That said, it would be nice to know the trading/hosting disposition of the files (and the "b" files)... Half the posts seem related to people either asking for links or posting links to the previous days' songs.

Once the 30 days is over, I can see this chunk of files being torrented like all the other recordings. How can those that have the files help those that are looking for them?

3/17/67? Not 3/18/67?

Was this Cream Puff War truly from 3/17/67 at Winterland? This must be a real hidden gem because there is no copy at Internet Archive and no set list on Dead Base or other set list sites.

I ask because this version sounds suspiciously similar to the 3/18/67 version at Winterland...

I'm looking for the He's

I'm looking for the He's Gone B download I missed, from L'Olympia Theater in Paris. Is there any way to get that? It's not on Ted's media Fire site either.

Today, I was able to download successfully, put in my answer all in the first five minutes ... posting a message was another story, but at this late hour, I hope it goes though. Thank you for this gem.

Thanks for the update, marye

Thanks for the update. I've got a couple of questions:

Are these downloads OK for others to host on their own servers?

What was the deal with those "B" versions, anyway?

Thanks again!

After playing both the download and a taper of 3/18/1967, they are the same thing. Could this be a simple mislabelled tape for all these years?

Guessing the show

I've been a fan a long time. I could never guess the exact day of a song version. I'm lucky if I can guess the era...Pigpen, Donnajean, Brent, Vince, one vs. two drummers, new tune intro, etc.
I applaud those who guess correctly...it's a miracle.

here's an official status update:

Hi folks-- We knew you were going to love 30 Days of Dead. We may have underestimated how much.

The original plan, as we said in the beginning, was that each day's stream and download would only be available for that day. Well, demand was so high that many folks had trouble connecting and downloading, so we've kept each day's files available short-term while we addressed the technical issues.

Once we've got those issues resolved and the downloads are going smoothly, we'll be removing the archive of previous days' files. We will give an advance warning before we do this.

Meanwhile, here's a list of links to date so you can download what you may have missed. Thanks!

Cheating

Actually, I'm one of the people that "discovered" prior info. on songs. I wish I would have not done that, as now there is no daily surprise for me. I have not submitted a guess since the inadvertent discovery. I ruined it for myself.
I do read the Official GD Facebook page for the "official" hints they give. I hope they give a "false" hint one of these days to spoil the spoilers.
I'm sure there are others that have found the things I have and are cheating, though.
Oh well, at least there's free music!

I figured it was a screwup...

...The A/B thing, it was obvious when they initially gave the wrong answer for the Easy Wind post. I just wondered why they had the extra versions of the songs in the directory in the first place - or why they made it obvious with the "a" tagged onto the end of the filename. They must know how people are, especially crafty li'l deadheads, somebody was bound to think "hmmm, wonder what'll happen if I change that "a" to a "b"?".

As for "stealing", that's a little strong. It's not like these songs aren't already available, from what I hear. I don't know if the circulating versions of the shows are as clean sounding as these copies but both shows are out there.

G'night!

day before the release...

in the answer above, it says this show took place the day before the release of the debut album, which was released on 3/17/67 - that would make this Cream Puff War from 3/16/67, no?...

holy smokes, the plot thickens!

Perfect in the morning...

Downloaded perfect and listened to it already, at 5 AM my time, which is about 11 AM on the West Coast. Servers have usually been too busy then and I've waited until evening.

From all the other success stories above, plus post re old links not working, sounds like our hosts may have moved servers or something. Here's hoping for a smooth ride for the next 20-days.

I submitted the correct answer directly the file became available, but the savvy and knowledgeable cbs73 beat me to the punch. (I should have answered first and downloaded second.) Congrats to cbs 73. Hope a correct reply of Winterland 3/18/67 results in entry for the weekly prize.

cbs73, what I really want to know is if you actually entered 3/17/67? Or is it just a typo from Dead.net? Either way, I made my pick in the first 5 minutes and from reading these posts, I was pathetically slow with my entry.

Ok Boys and Girls I'm Back From Furthur

Sooooo Glad Marye came up and clarified things and posted the links. Thanks for picking up the slack I left when i went to Iowa.

Furthur Iowa~Ames, IA Stephens Auditorium Nov. 9th, 2010

Wow, this show was ~HOT~ when they put this venue up they were thinking one thing ACOUSTICS. This was by far the best sounding acoustics I've heard yet (of course Red Rox is up there) but this had the band sounding almost surreal it was so good.

The lot scene was kinda wierd, kinda cool at the same time. The Weird part was we got there around 4:20pm and there was a big parking lot (Probably for the Iowa State Cyclones Football Games) but there wasn't a whole lot of heads there yet. It was very lax and chill. The ratio of "seasoned deadheads and touch-new heads was about 1 in 4. We got there and grabbed a picnic bench close by and had a blast. As we were going in the theatre, a very short walk, I was noticing how steep the theatre looked. The security there was a joke, I mean they didn't even scan my ticket as I floated in the venue like an Easy Wind.

The cool thing though, we get to our seats (about 9th Row) and I look around and see a beautiful Theatre type setting with very steep balcony's. The venue had 2500 capacity and it was nice. Looking at the new tie-dyed backdrop on the stage and I was in heaven. The band played flawlessly this night with the highlight for me being two songs Phil Bomb into The Other One and a heartfelt Black Peter from Bobby.

A few of the songs JK and Bobby were trading verses and I think this was really helping Bobby to be able to belt out his signature interjections (like "Come and See" during Black Peter!!) and noticed this works very well to not strain our Bobby!!!!!!

As usual Jeff Chimenti was one of the stars, but in the mix they didn't have him up very loud (they tend to let him out of the cage only on select nights) but I'm assuming it's not going to be this way in Chicago.

Chibear and I were talking about this show and both have seen at least 14 Furthur shows or more each. We both agreed that this was by far the best acoustical set-up venue yet, and the band really played one of the better shows we've seen. The venue ("Saint" Stephens Auditorium deserves all of it's hype. The weirdest part about the shows was the crowd.....Even Phil sayed something like (paraphrase here) Nice to see all the new faces out here, (hehehe in his Phil chuckle) during the donor rap. We looked around the venue all night and only saw the Old School Deadheads dancing there asses off (including myself) and the rest just foot tapping and getting into it. I don't mean they weren't having fun, just didn't know what to do. The Crowd energy was nothing like it was in Red Rocks, Furthur Fest or Chicago last year. But I think it proves that Furhtur is passing the torch to the younger generation! So all in all its a good thing.

I danced my ass off. In fact during set break, one of the young kind girls sayed hey man I've never seen anyone dance with such passion and groove like that untill tonight. I said, this is your first Dead related show isn't it...she just nodded. So I guess it was innevitable that the encore Touch of Grey was very fitting. That was the only song I was dissapointed with...not so much at how they played it, but more because being the selfish fan I am I wanted something more old school.

After the show we hung around the lot, which was a pretty groovin shakedown for another 2-3 hours just groovin. Didn't see nary a security guard once and everyone had a very chill vibe.

Overall, I give this show a B+ more for the crowd energy than how the band played....Now, time for CHICAGO BABY!!!!!! WOhooooooo.
