Grateful Dead

On Wisconsin Vine

We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!

Cool they remembered to post a Facebook clue!

SPOILER ALERT if you're one of those "no clues" people RUN AWAY!!!

"CLUE: This song was played continuously by the Grateful Dead 1966-1995, with the exception of 1968 and 1972-1975."

Sounds like it might be an easy song, with about a gazillion performances to pick from LOL.

The more I read about iTunes...

...the less inclined I am to get an iPod.

Hey peter1, look back a few pages in the thread, there should be a post with links to all the previously posted songs. Good luck!

I too, did not hear the organ, my guess was 10-19-71, last show before Keith starts. I had a feeling it was late pig era.

Where can I find all of the songs?

Does anyone have links to the previous downloads?

Joined: Jun 18 2007

I didn't hear the organ too well, but it's buried in there. But could have sworn Keith's piano in there (even more buried) too. I guessed 12/31/71.

Where do my downloaded songs go in iTunes?

Almost all of the songs that I have downloaded have disappeared in iTunes. Does anyone know how to locate them?

I was waaaayyyy off. I guessed Sept. '72! On my listen, I didn't make out the organ, so when I started seeing that clue show up in the comments section I realized I was off. I love the way Phil's bass thrumps along in this version...

it's from when I think it is, then it's a one in four shot, and only one of those four has actually been commercially released. Unfortunately, since bits and pieces of all five shows have been commercially released, all dubs of all shows have been fully repressed at The Usual Outlet. So I spun the wheel (like Ezekiel) and plunked my chips down on one of 'em. Of course, I could be totally wrong but I'm a dancin' fool...

You guys are on the right track.

The sources on LMA ran between 8 and 20 seconds faster than the download.

Does it "go into" something else or is it a dead stop?

You'll know you have it when you find the count in, so check the song prior to Truckin'.

for the moment at least we are NOT pulling the posts with links to previous days' tracks, and thanks to Canyon, 3Phase et al for their diligence.

As noted in the 30 Days status topic, this may eventually change, but they're still there and hey, I just downloaded Saturday's track to make sure.

Deadicated Deadheads

I used to think I was a deadicated deadhead until I discovered traders networks online a few years ago and started getting hold of cdr shows, there's an awesome amount of stuff out there, if not always in the most pristine form, often 3rd gen tapes of soundboards which have been transferred to cdr, but it gives you an insight into the way the band sounded at different stages of their evolution. Which is why a lot of us are saying this has to be '71, but they played Truckin' a good many times in that year, so you have to have listened to a lot of shows to be able to pinpoint it!

lost songs in iTunes

hey peter1,

have you looked in your "recently added" folder? That's where mine are.
They do get all mixed up in the library though. Just do a search for Grateful Dead and you should see them scattered throughout you Dead collection.

Good Luck

Gonna guess that you opened

Gonna guess that you opened it directly from your browser instead of saving it first. If you want to do that, you have to configure iTunes to copy the files to your library, otherwise you'll lose the song when the browser cache clears.

Where in iTunes

Look in your recently added or look under Artist for "The Grateful Dead".
As far as out of order tunes. Right click on the tune then click on "get info" then click on "info". Name the Album like "30 Days of Downloads" and number the track "x" of 30.
Happy daze. Gonna see Further on Wednesday! Happy Birthday to Me!

Yuppers, brilliant idea if I say so myself ;)

I made some "Have a Jerry Little Christmas" cards a few years ago, printed out some photos of Jerry and glued red construction paper Santa suits/hats on 'em with cotton balls for the fur trim. They went over well.

It's not just 'cause I'm greedy for free tidbits of Jerry tunes (although I am, always), this has been a very entertaining contest, and the discussions on these threads have made for enjoyable reading. I guess the publishing or marketing or whatever of Jerry's work is somewhat more complicated than for the GD, what with that Garcia Family Trust owning the rights (and bless 'em for whatever they let out), but still it seems doable. The JGAB releases are pretty nice - I've had the Acoustic Band album forever and that Ragged but Right is welcome, obviously, but there are a ton of Garcia Band shows out there I'd be happy to hear some more of.

One thing I've noticed with

One thing I've noticed with the 30 Days is that with the exception of I Know You Rider, these are all composed by the band members. We have yet to see well know covers such as Good Lovin', Lovelight, Dancin', Morning Dew, etc.

Joined: May 18 2009
Yeah, I noticed that too, cbs73

Although there are a bunch more signature tunes written by the band members - more than enough to finish out the month - there are some great cover songs to be had, no doubt. Dylan, the Beatles (LUCY!!!!)...I'm guessing there are issues regarding royalty payments that are easy to handle if it's on CDs being sold, but not so easy to handle if it's on music being given away like these are. Probably a similar issue would arise if any tunes with a "guest artist" were to be made available, or from one of the Hornsby shows.

There's still sooooooo much to pick from though, any complications are easily avoided.

Would love to have a Hornsby show thrown into the mix.

Trucks for the Thank'in!

Just got home. Missed another morning.

anybody want to flow me some hints. What a tough one. I have lots of truck'ins on my iPod and I can never keep them straight. I'm lost in a sea of 70/71 insanity! What a trip. I'm lost on that road.

Any luck elsewhere?

Previous days songs

Hi, It looks like the comments from previous days were cleared and I'm looking for links for previous day's songs or an example of fomat to locate. Would someone kindly help me out. I was at a Motel 6 in Goleta which I couldn't bring myself to spring for the $2.99/day Wifi. I did find More Mesa though. This undeveloped Garden of Eden was unbeknownst to me during my student days in the early 80's while a student at UCSB, even though Storke Tower is visble from there. Sometimes, paradise is closer than you think.

...'cause I'm still seeing the comments with the links. Look on page 3 of this thread, assuming you have them set to "oldest first" with 10 comments per page. Enjoy!

The Last Post

The Dead Net website has been working extraordinarily well for the last couple of days. The original intent of the contest was for the songs to be made available for one day only but that was temporarily extended due to a minor technicality and a few technical difficulties.

The difficulties appear to have succumbed to a few well-placed kicks to the minor technicality and very few people have any trouble downloading the song of the day.

It's been a total blast so far and there's more to look forward to for the rest of the month so this will be my last post with links to the contest songs that were posted before November 13th.
