We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!

I'm back from Furthur....oh yeah

What a blast, had a great time with my family. The boyz played phenomenally.

Has Marye called off the links yet? Otherwise I'll just put em all up again.

Congrats to the winners over the last couple of days as well.

Hey Pidders

I doubt if any of us "old school" dead.netters are gonna win...but man it's just fun to try.

Send good vibes to Sam (you met him @ Mann Center) for his truck...a belt broke in the lot of the Chicago shows and he has to get it towed all the way to Indiana. He should be @ MSG if all works out and I may stow away.

1970 El Monte concert

Through the haze of the years, two things stand out in my memory from this post-Christmas concert -- First, that there was a smaller audience than at any Dead concert I had been to, before or since (maybe 200, max). And, an incredible version of Silver Threads and Golden Needles. Any chance of getting this released?

Wow, I was really surprised to see that it was played only 10x pre-retirement (2x '69, 6x '70, 2x '71). And I always thought it was called Minglewood Blues until it was revived. Still so much to learn.

What's up with the shorties...?

The last 5 songs all under nine minutes. Bummer. Especially after 7 of 11 (counting the B versions) were all over ten, with some nice jamming...

Anyway, thanks for this GREAT program/opportunity.

Hopefully, tomorrow's song will be West LA Fadeaway! ;-)

Ahh, I see, they played it 5 times in 66, when it WAS called just "Minglewood Blues," then when they brought it back in '69 they added the "New" to the title. Interesting.

This song became a workhorse when it was brought back in 76 and would be played a number of times every year through 95, with a peak of 42 appearances in 1979.

Not one of my favorite songs, but generally enjoyable as Jerry would usually rise to the occasion with a nice solo. Weir's late-70's slide solos on the other hand...

Minglewood Trivia

The Grateful Dead's version on their first LP was a modified version of the song by Noah Lewis, recorded in 1930, on which it was originally based ("New Minglewood Blues")
The New Riders' version is based on this original version, but with a couple of verses added from Charley Patton's "Screamin' And Hollerin' The Blues."
For more background, see the pages on Minglewood Blues and In Search Of Minglewood on the Roots Of The Grateful Dead site.
Eric Levy has discovered a verse in a song called "It Won't Be Long" recorded by Charley Patton in 1929 that may be a source for Noah Lewis's "New Minglewood Blues" recorded almost two years later: "You ever go down to Memphis, stop by Minglewood
You ever go down to Memphis, stop by Minglewood
You Memphis women don' mean no man no good"

John L Yarbro, Jr. provided additional background:
"New Minglewood Blues was originally written about a company mill village, Menglewood, Tennessee (built by the Menglewood Box Company) which my grandfather purchased along with the former woodlands in the 1920's, cleared and farmed. The property is still in my family. My father grew up in Menglewood, but it was a lot tamer after my grandfather moved his people there. Local history about Menglewood as a company town paint it as wild and wide open with whiskley, women and gambling. Menglewood is located about 78 miles north of Memphis, Tennessee, alongside the Obion River which is in the Mississippi River floodplain."

I like it

I like this version. Very cool. Has to be fairly early. Based on
the clues, I'd say 1969, but who knows.

When Minglewood rocks it is one of Bobby's best moments. When Weir finishes his slide solo Jerry always comes back with a great solo also.
