We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!

disc tracking

thedeej:

If you take the first five songs (New Speedway, Dark Star, Althea, PITB, Easy Wind "A") that adds up to 78:51 for "disc 1".

The next eight (Sugaree, He's Gone "A", Estimated, China Rider, Cream Puff, St. Stephen, TMNS and Truckin') add up to 78:40 for "disc 2".

Perhaps it is coincidence that they come out just short of 80 minutes. In several days we'll know how a "disc 3" shapes up. I'm ignoring the "B" versions until it's clear whether they are "bonus" tracks or not.

I think it was Sunday when someone mentioned arranging all the songs into a 30 Days Setlist. Think of how the GD Movie Soundtrack is arranged into "sets" on each disc.

Editing the songs together to account for transitions, "dead air", etc., would be fine for CD, but you can't go back to MP3 without further degrading the tracks.

I'm sure that Audacity imports the MP3 as an intermediate file type like WAV and then reencodes it as MP3.

I'm listening chronologically!

I've listed all of the tracks on my ipod by date i.e. 80-10-25. That way the songs play in order by year, and the "dead" air really makes a couple of them flow together nicely.

Help

For some reason I had not paid close enough attention to figure out that you had to get the download the day it was posted. I only have two songs UGH! Is there some where else to look for them on this site? Also the download from yesterday is not in my file no clue where it went.

don't get me wrong, i love everything (well could do without a picasso or corrina from time to time), but seems everything is early and no love for anything post brent

also, we have had a repeat of a show run? lets broaden the horizons a bit, yeah??

This is fun

I know I will probably never win this contest but at least it is fun to try. At least I have been fairly close on several of my guesses.

Wait a minute

Is JSFC today's winner or yesterday's winner? Yesterday's thread still shows no winner, and this S/S is pretty generic, nothing really distinctive.

Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

It took me a half hour to get it right, so I'm definitely not first, but today being first came a distant second to enjoying this sweet Sailor>Saint from the boys.

Thank you for making the music available, and thank you for the work needed to make the downloads genuinely available. The complaints have stopped, and people are just enjoying the music. Thanks, thanks, and again, thanks!

Great stuff

One of my favorite Bobby songs. So glad they still break this out, and have put it back together. Lost sailor belongs with St. of Circumstance. Thank you very much!

my guess is...

10-25-80 Radio City. Definitely in the '79-81 era, indoors, with Bobby and Brent sounding great vocally, Jerry's lines are brilliant, and length is about right. Saint doesn't go into anything either.

A great performance here. The "peak" in Saint is awesome!!!

Confused

Ok first it says a winner has been chosen then it says no winner. Is there an exact time this begins or is it as random as Donna being in key? I didn't even try to guess based on the fact it said someone had won. Is there going to be a consistency we can rely on or is this gonna be a "No-show Jones" situation? Help please. I'm so confused.

A winner has not yet been

A winner has not yet been declared for today. JSFC won yday's New Minglewood blues. They generally do not post the winner until the following morning. Today, probably inadvertently, they didn't post the winner of yday's until they posted the song for today. All that being said, I would say, based on experience, that the winner generally gets the show within 15 minutes or so, less if the era is readily apparent and the song was not played often in that era. You should still enter to try and win the weekly draw.

hmm

I liked the earlier post about Bobby being the one running the contest, and the request for more Pigpen. I was thinking they would definitely have a Hard To Handle. But then I realized they probably wouldn't. And they probably also won't have a Morning Dew. Can anyone guess why I think this? The first person to post correctly why I think this wins either (a) one WAV CD show of their choice from 1977, or (b) 1 disc of 4 SHN/FLAC shows of their choice from 1977. The show(s) you choose can't be an official release, of course. And I'm not spending more than a few bucks on postage so you probably have to live in North America (sorry Euros, screwed again!) I will PM the winner, if anyone cares to take me up on my offer.

WOW! Thanks for the QUALITY download!

I saw them play this combo the second time they ever played Saint. Odd show & odd venue; Holleder Stadium, Rochester. I have chosen another time & place for my guess....

Thanks, again!

you got it!

Great job, ronmarley1! Yes, I think that is it. Artists are free to cover a song but if they release it there is a fee they have to pay to the original artist, or whoever owns the copyright to the song. It is a nominal fee, but a fee nonetheless. While that doesn't stop the Dead from releasing on an album for sale a song written by someone else, I think it would stop them from releasing for free download a song. They aren't bringing any money in but would have to pay money out. I will PM you sir and you can make your selection.

My Guess-Updated

Along with the "New Minglewood Blues," I was also thinking that they might have a "GDTRFB" since that's based on a old song that many folks recorded. I have an version of Woody Guthrie doing a song titled "Blowin' Down the Road (I Ain't Going to be Treated This Way)." It's on an album called "Dust Bowl Ballads" that was recorded in 1940. It's very similar to the Dead's version.
