You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.
Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. This song makes me miss Jerry. I was fortunate to see Jerry when he was alive. But unfortunate to have only seen Jerry and the boys once in my life. July 24,1995 RFK Stadium DC. I was set and ready to go on tour. Then sadly Jerry left us. Those who got to enjoy this great music are very lucky and have been blessed. I feel blessed that I was introduced to this wonderful world and have continued to enjoy the other jams. However, I will always treasure the one time I was in Jerry's presence. The music never stopped.
Consistently good? I think not.
I've never heard this song before today....
Got my hip replaced on 11/12 and haven't been able to do a lot of downloading until now. All the links and stuff are VERY appreciated!

What do you mean Brent? this show was '93 and sadly we had lost brent just under three years earlier...Vince was just starting to come into his own vocally in the band...
always loved the knick for shows...'93 was an interesting year for certain....glad they finally brought out some newer stuff!
muffin
I got nothin' for art though. Almost sounds like the cover of the SMR box.
yeah over $100, totally insane, I would rather have someone burn me a copy. Apperentl;y the hype is because the first ones no longer have the 3rd disc with them. I was the happiest girl on earth 2 weeks ago: My husband got in a car accident (he was totally fine) but we got this awesome rental with the siruis satellite and it was Dead 24/7 LOL
He actually got teed at me after a week of nonstop dead. , told me that the people make the shows, whreas I rather have the music.
The official time is supposed to be 12:00 EDT. However, they've been as early as 15ish minutes and as late as 10ish.
Given this community, that shouldn't be a surprise. ; )
I dunno. You think they drug test?
Gotta be careful on eBay. They have some items up for bid that are more expensive than the copies that are still available here! And they may say "factory sealed" but re-applying shrinkwrap is not challenging, I know some of those capitalist swine buy it, burn it and resell it as "new".
What time eastern time do they post the daily song? Anyone know?
DAMM that is a thought provoking,. stomach turning piece of truth- do you cry or scream, or PRAY until you can't pray anymore?
In '92 the Dead played at the StarLake Amphitheatre outside of Pittsburgh. Their version of So Many Roads that night (2nd show of 2) remains a highlight. Jerry seldom sounded better.
Nice Job Critter! Phantom ships with phantom sails...
Did anybody else order the new Cd's? Mine came today I only listened to one song so far, but so good :) I was on ebay and the older ones with the 3rd CD are selling for over $100
I was right about the Knick and I'm going to the show tonight so let's hope luck is on my side. I want that new Penn State/Cornell 1980 release!
What kind of music player do you use to play So Many Roads as I would like to try to get that icon you described after you dowloaded
Now go feed those hogs before they worry themselves into anemia
Just wanted to say a big thank you for the downloads and for making such amazing music. I'm a latecomer who only got into the Dead a year or so ago, and now you're all I listen to! You guys are the only band that ever truly got it, ever really worked it all out. So much positivity and depth. Took me two decades of music-nerding to find you, and finally my search is over. :)
I've got my finger crossed for a version of Alice D. Millionaire played slower than the version on the extended Grateful Dead album, like this one that's on youtube at the moment:

Come to London England please Further! Or at least keep going until I have funds to come visit you!
Thanks to Canyon Critter too for sorting me out with the one's I'd missed.
In addition to Canyon Critter's posts, all the downloads are listed here:
They could make it more challenging and choose a Me & My Uncle>Big River.
yep - I do so remember Jerry & Brent on vocal fire for these shows ..
I still miss Jerry.
I asked if we could have this number yesterday, and lo and behold! Thanks to everyone at Deadnet for this, I think we probably all agree this is Jerry's greatest late era song, if not his greatest ever, and his swan song.
Date? Well I'm not so good on late era, but I would guess early nineties rather than right toward the end as Jerry is in strong voice.
This is so emotional, getting me really choked up as I listen through it again!
Love ya Jerry!
Hilarious, Great idea for X-mas :)
I think Dead.net has a couple people they should hire from this spot
Tears and a happy sadness.....
And I knew whichever one I chose, it would end up being The Other One!!! I chose, probably incorrectly, Boston 9-28-93. Oh well, better luck next time :-)))
Thanx for the music............
May there be light where there was once none!
May there be music where there was once silence!!
Sandman Out!!!
The picture pulled up in my regular file and my windows media player, I have windows XP, I go to start menu then go into My music, and as soon as I downloaded So many roads, when I went into the file it had the picture on it, where before it was just the plain yellow file. So I opned it in windows media player and it pulled the same photo and says "So many roads" 1965-1995 disc 5- like it is from this album... So I googled this album and this song is on disc #5, I get the impression this is not an unreleased track, otherwise why would media player pull a photo and all this info, whereas not one of the other downloads did this, I actually had to put the artist in and the album title, ect ...any thoughts?
I dunno, sounds like February 1968 to me ...
Does anybody own the SMR box set? I was wondering how long the version of this song is on disc # 5, the info listed for the song on the CD is Soldier Field Illinois 7 9 95 I wondered if it matches the time for today? Why else would it automatically gave me a photo and info?
"Now go feed those hogs before they worry themselves into anemia"
Ha...I watch that movie every day almost, and I been trying to figure out exactly what Auntie Em said right there. Just couldn't understand it completely. Thanks, Good Brother!!
...free yourself...
WikiPedia, the 100% Accurate Source says:
10."So Many Roads" (Garcia/Hunter) – 9:24
WMP can be configured to do what you describe, although I wouldn't expect it to have done that unless you changed the track title from SoManyRoads to So Many Roads
Listen to this craziness:
I download this song, When I right click to get info it says
So many Roads, 1965-1995 year 1999 disc 5 track 10
The SMR boxset lists this song at Soldierfield IL 7 9 95 it lists the song at 9:58
When I search the archive of the concert for this ( 7 9 95 S F ILlinois) it says over 12 minutes.
This version is 7:24 but it says on my computer it is from this CD- obviously this cannot be? WTH is going on, I want to know the date for this song!!! And why am I the only one whos computer gave it a photo and all this stuff!!!!!
Do you think somehting weird is up? Even if my computer is insane why would they list a show as being 9:58 and then archive it at over 12?
This is making my wheels go berserk...
What a long strange day it's been :)
but I suspect your computer is racking its brain trying to match the track to something it already knows about and that's the closest approximation it can make.
I've seen iTunes make some really strange guesses also; I think it uses Gracenote.
I didn't change a cotton picking thing!!! All I did was download it, It automatically attached the photo, NONE of these downloads had a photo, I was storing them all in that plain yellow folder in my music, I titled it myself "30 days of dead" I added Canyoncritters photos to it. Not one of these downloads did this, but it appears that it is not the same version cause the times are not the same. But it is odd, cause it is tleling me it came form this CD- don't know
Stupid computer-LOL
Well, that was a sad reminder of what we are missing . . .
Never had such a good time . . . in my life before!!!!
Haha, well that particular version has been edited from the original live version. Part of the song from an earlier performance version was spliced into the beginning since Jer messed up the words, and then the second guitar solo was removed. At least that's my recollection from looking at it a couple days ago.
Seriously, thanks for the awesome downloads! This is definitely in keeping with the spirit of the band and their music. And it's much appreciated.
Keep up the great work.
-Tim
"...statements just seem vain at last."
I have had several of these downloads appear with a photo. Yes this one had the So Many Roads box cover, Truckin had American Beauty cover, New Speedway had Workingman's Dead, Sugaree had the Winterland 73 Box cover, Cream Puff War had the 1st albums cover, and Althea had the Beyond Description box cover. There's no conspiracy it just happens people no big deal.
Loved today because like other's don't think I'd ever heard this song, cool cool.
I think i should have submitted answer before i posted it in forum.. DOH!
10. "So Many Roads" (Soldier Field, Chicago, July 9, 1995 - what would be the Grateful Dead's final show. Note that the few seconds of the Jerry Garcia solo guitar intro heard here were taken from an earlier performance, and that Garcia's first attempt at the final verse (which he sang twice) and a second solo have been eliminated.)
...I turn off those options on any application I use. I don't use iTunes but I've got it turned off on Winamp and WMP. Just me being paranoid, but you never know where personal information is being stored or to what use it may be put, and I don't trust anybody's ability to keep whatever data may be transmitted and stored, secure. Even if it's just song titles, or album art, or what I have looked at on Amazon, or what I've googled, or Facebooked, or typed in a comment on dead.net for that matter. Just not comfortable with it.
It's just a matter of time until Big Uncle decides to make the companies turn over all that information anyway, in the interest of "national security", you know, to "protect us from the terrorists".
LMAO.
I put 7/9/95 as the answer for So Many Roads but I think I was too late! I was confused because the opening riff is different from that show. Oh well... this awesome site is the greatest procrastination tool in the universe! :)
The new songs that were written/co-written by Jerry Garcia for what would have been their next studio album were all great. Lazy River Road, Liberty and SMRs were all great tunes. I had mixed feelings about some of the other band members new songs though, like Corrina, Eternity, East Answers, Way To Go Home, Samba In The Rain, Wave To The Wind, Childhoods End and If The Shoe Fits.
just haven't been able to get any of that good smoke some people have talked about on here, fired up waiting for the new song of the day, so I'm not as paranoid right now as I could/should be. hehe. RT 2:2 2/14/68 Viola Lee Blues Baby!!
Thanks evryone, now at least I know I'm not insane and my computer is:) Thanks for clearing up the confusion with the time frames, Glad someone else's computer thought it needed to download pics too:)
