We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2010 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps download every day this November. That's 30 days of Dead! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some great music from the Dead.
                                                     + More Info
You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand.

Each day, the first person to guess the venue & date correctly will get a Road Trips of their choice. If you’re not first but you've answered correctly, you will also be automatically entered for a weekly prize of THE WARNER BROTHERS STUDIO ALBUMS VINYL BOX (EXCLUSIVE EDITION) or a FORMERLY THE WARLOCKS boxed set. Log in now and enter to win!
                                                   - Less Info
We haven't selected a daily winner yet. The first person to answer correctly will get to pick a Road Trips of their choice. To get started, login or register using the form above.
We haven't selected a winner for the week of 11/22 yet!

Thanks CC

too we posted at the same time. I agree the playing is always amazing, but the singing isn't always good. That really puzzles me, just like how the songs of their later albums were inconsistent. Still, love them all to bits and very grateful for the downloads.

One thing Aloxomoxola

And this was stated by every single one of the band members....they NEVER captured the magic in the studio...not to say that their worst stuff (meaning the worst that the Grateful Dead could do) wasn't par or even superior to most musical acts (4 decades of it...and beyond). They were a live act and the studio wasn't their thing.

How can folks be whining about the song selection?

It's free, people.

It's not like you paid for this.

Shut yer pie holes and listen to the music.

To Aloxomoxola

There are no easy answers to any of your questions. I think you just need to keep absorbing all you can from books, articles, comment pages--Theres a ton of all of them. And of course there's the music itself.

You seem like somewhat of a newbie (I dont mean that in any disrespectful sort of way either) I appreciate your curiousity, but I would re-think some of your assumptions about the music through their career. I for one love Europe 72, and I think most people here would consider it an essential recording of a golden era. But you dont have to like it, thats cool too.

There are great songs and weaker songs on ALL their studio albums. It's never necessary to discount complete eras from your listening, by saying I only listen to 67-68 or whatever.Theres really 30 years of great music.

And dont get hung about the drug use, whats done is done, but the music was always treated with respect and adoration by the players One reason I think so many people have such mad love for this band is that they never seemed to do anything for commercial reasons. They were artists, simply for the sake of the art. And that wasnt a common occurence then, and especially now. Blabbity, blabbity blabbity. I have to stop now---Peace

That LIG is AOK

Ya, I liked LIG because it gave me a chance to go to the bathroom before the crush of set break, but this IS a fine version.

My theory(oh no, here he goes again) :

The first LIG was a mistake. Like the one track that had the date tagged to the name, and the "B" versions obviously being left in the wrong file.

Some tracks seemed cut so we couldn't tell what song came next, for the challenge, while others seemed cut so we did have it as a clue. Maybe Tennessee Jed was just edited wrong, or someone just posted the unedited file thinking it was the one they had edited.

I don't know. Good a theory as any, I guess.

Yeah, I was wondering about that first LIG...

...I figured it was more of an "ooops" than a mistake though.

LOL You should post that LIG is your "pee song", I think there's a forum just for that.

Speaking of "oops", 1 AM ET and no FB clue. G'night, freaks!

I just wanted to say....thank you to all who made this possible...the purists, the complainers, the execs, the fans, deadheads of old, deadheads of new, deadheads to come, the band (alive and not)......and especially to all who came around these last 30 days just to hang out and be part of this parking lot scene.....

RT Subscription

From the email I had today - just like segan63 said yesterday. Seems the incentive is the single bonus disc and the free shipping. For me this is a no brainer since I buy them all regardless. Harder to justify $96 in one pop instead of about $28 every three months, but there is some savings.

INTRODUCING ROAD TRIPS 2011 SUBSCRIPTIONS
Just think of it as summer love in the spring, fall and winter. It's true - you can now order all four of the upcoming 2011 Road Trips releases (with FREE SHIPPING on all four sets) in one fell swoop. Plus we know how much you love Bonus Discs so as a special thank you for signing up for a Road Trips 2011 Subscription, you'll get an exclusive bonus disc, with music drawn from one of the next two Road Trips releases, sent to you along with Road Trip Vol. 4 No. 3. This will all be previously unreleased, top-notch Dead, mastered in HDCD, and will ONLY be available to subscribers of the Road Trips Series! Get it now.

That the end of the 30 Days promotion coincides with the announcement of the RT 2011 Subscription, I'm sure the intent was to capture as many email addresses as possible and rekindle interest with the much more casual & past listeners. The "Management Secrets" link posted by William Crum earlier describes the parallels to this - give something for free (allow taping/trading; the MP3s) so that it drives demand in something profitable (concert tickets/Road Trips).

Perhaps we'll see the same thing next year...

There must surely be a mistake with the shipping cost - I was quoted $180.11 for standard shipping to the UK.
I could fly over and pick them up myself for less.

The email I received said the super cool free 30 song disc is ONLY for those who subscribe to the series, so if you order each one seperately at the according time you do not get this disc- I mean I guess it's ok to pay all at once, BUT I think they should let us know what years they are doing for all 4 of the 2011 Road trips, since it is unrefundable
Any imput form anyone else?

The shipping?

are you serious, it says the shipping for free, that is part of the subscription-why do you have to pay twice as much for England? And is that 185 us or pounds?

You got the wrong end of the stick

dark.starz, I'm interested in why their output was so varied in quality and character after the first decade. Making no judgement about drug use other than how it might influence the music. Many different genres have developed specifically to cater towards drug experiences. Surprised that it's a taboo subject here.

I didn't realise there were books to buy, just ordered Phil's and Scully's. So I'll be out of your hair from now on.

Two things about the RT sub

Two things about the RT sub bonus disc...

1. The bonus disc will include "music drawn from one of the next two Road Trips releases, sent to you along with Road Trip Vol. 4 No. 3."

2. "This will all be previously unreleased."

Does this mean:

A. The music on the bonus disc is literally taken from the next two RT releases (4.4 and 5.1 I assume), and that AT THE TIME it is released (with RT 4.3) the music on the bonus disc would be considered previously unreleased? Essentially this would be a sneak preview disc.

OR

B. The music on the bonus disc is drawn from the same shows, but would not overlap like the previous bonus discs.

i thought the whole

idea was that the shipping WAS FREE, it says so in the email and on the page for ordering, it should say free to USA if not evrywhere, not cool

And I think we are entitled to at least Know the years for volume

people are gonna

have their friends in the USA order it then ship it over, cause it will be less expensive- seriously how expensive is it to ship to England somehting that weighs not even a pounds- like what $10, so the most it should be is an extra $40 right
that is just horrid, the whole thing says free shipping, that is evry misleading:(

Aloxomoxola: you asked

Aloxomoxola: you asked perfectly reasonable questions in a perfectly reasonable manner. There are no taboo subjects, so don't let some people's "Deadier than thou" attitude bother you. Phil Lesh's autobiography is a good read, as are a couple of the Jerry Garcia biographies - should be available at your local library, or inexpensively, used, through Amazon. Or new from here, of course.

This subscription dealio: Cool fake cover pffft. It's not gonna happen for me without knowing what the shows are ahead of time, sorry. And apparently they AREN'T going to be complete shows, if the magical "bonus disc" (that doesn't show up until the 4.3 RT is released in May) contains material from one of the first two releases. Not complete shows, don't even know how "partial" the shows are, or from where or from when. Have these marketing whiz kids learned nothing over the past few years?

Who can afford to shell this out anyway? It's Christmas, I've got presents to buy and I'm not able to tie up a hundred bucks on something that won't show up for months and months.

Free shipping isn't an incentive, either. I usually got free ground shipping for buying a bundle, but even without that option saving five bucks every three months doesn't make it worth the gamble either. I'll bet they still have a free shipping package with the individual releases when they come out, wait and see.

Why not announce what the shows are? Are they that scared, or have they just not decided yet? They seem to know how many songs are going to be on that bonus disc, but don't know which show they're from?

THIRTY SONGS on the bonus disc? That's gotta be a typo, the Dead just don't have that many 2 1/2 minute long songs LMAO. They even tossed a smart-ass remark into the email text: "we know how much you love bonus discs". I can wait and see how that turns out, and if it's just so drool-inducing awesome I can't resist then I'll buy it off eBay after dude burns his copy and sells the original.

That overseas (or over that imaginary line between here and Canada) shipping cost is total outrageous bullshit. I've shipped several similar items (like EXACTLY THE SAME, except probably heavier) to both GB and Europe and every time it was about fifteen bucks, tops, and I know I packed it better than they will. Maybe that "Globalware Solutions" outfit is gouging Rhino for a variation in GWS's mindless robotic shipping process but ten times the cost is hideously mercenary and unfair to the Euroheads - ESPECIALLY since you have to pay it up front. How much have they been burning you overseas types on S/H for individual releases, anyway?

This whole thing reeks of half-assedness, and I guarantee when the customer service issues start piling up it will become a nightmare.

Epic fail, folks, epic fail. Not winning you any friends, that's for sure.
