so good to hear this quality as late as 88

I have an uncle john's that is like so good. This one pretty good too but ya have to admit by 88 Jerry's voice was starting to fade, still the instruments on this fantastico.
I don't care if he had no voice left at all if only he could be with us today.

Best Night of the Run!

In the 10 years of NYE runs I saw, Dec 28th was often the best show of the run. They were warmed up from a few days of playing but not tired - or distracted by New Years' revelry and the guestlist like they would be three days later.

Even here at the Coliseum . . . but I sure loved the Oakland Auditorium (later renamed Henry J Kaiser)! Good times!

What's become of the baby

Thanks for the great fun David. I think that the band configuration during Nov-Dec 1973 can add an element of confusion when trying to identify the origin of a recording that might be fun for those who don't remember that brief period.

Hey Now, All,

Many thanks, David, for the 30 Days! This is fantastic. This version of Uncle John's knocked me out when I heard it in '88 and ever since. The way Bobby and Brent each come in is a beautiful build to an amazing song. The smile this brought to my face was insane.

After a few days of knowing the year, but not nailing the exact dates, this one was a treat. Love the wicked-early stuff too.

Great sound!

I would love to see another release from this era again soon just for the sound. I don't know what it is, but these have such a nice matrixy sound...lots of depth. Is it the mix, or the way it was recorded? Thanks!

Covers

There were no covers in last years 30 Days--my guess is that there will be no this year, doubtlessly due to copyright issues for royalties and other legal technicalities.

That said, there has been no Terrapin, no Scarlet>Fire, no Row Jimmy, no Eyes>Estimated, no Wharf Rat in either year. To say nothing of no Phil or Pigpen (this year). Any and all would be welcomed.

Thanks for all the music Dave.

No Requests from me, just hoping...

I suspect that Dave already picked the 30 tunes for this month well in advance (like last year), so I won't bother with requests. I just hope he lets Phil sing this year. Not including a BoR last year was a great disappointment.

Days Between

I do really like all the other suggestions, but I'm gonna vote for Days Between, just because nobody else voted for it.

I seem to recall that I've got a good AUD tape from late winter/early spring 199X (?) from the Palace @ Auburn Hills, MI with a very tasty version of Days.

Just can't remember off the top of the head.

12/28/88?

Maybe? Definitely sounds like they are going into Miracle, and I thought I heard some Brent midi in there somewhere. My best guess, anyway.

Speaking of Eyes

Speaking of Eyes, I'm not a huge fan of many recordings of it - but I just listened to Roosevelt Stadium 8-6-74 (RT #31) . . . holy crap! I'm not easily impressed anymore but that is fricking amazing. The version in the Dead movie absolutely pales in comparison!

I highly recommend a listen.

Great UJB

Jerry was coming back strong on this tour after his health issues. Nothing like a good UJB; it always gives me a foolish heart for the Dead's music. I'll never forget the first time I heard this song. Workingman's Dead was the first Grateful Dead album I owned. I was taken completely by surprise when those first acoustic guitar chords and lush vocal harmonies were seared into my brain. The peace, the beauty. I needed a miracle, and the Dead were it. Never say it's all over now, Baby Blue...

Dead.net might be waiting for the winners to respond to the e-mail before posting the name.

I checked this morning and some of the winners from the beginning of the contest have been posted but there was a gap or two, then nothing up to today.

Half way through...

Sadly, this is 15 of 30 today kids! I could seriously do this every day! They're going to have to leave out a pretty large amount of songs, so if you had to choose three, what would you want?

I'm going with:

Viola Lee Blues
Terrapin
Jack Straw> (they didn't do this one last year and I could use a new version, preferably going into another tune)

Love to hear...

...Althea or Sugaree! I can never have enough of those songs! Some more I would love to see would be some other sweet Jerry ballads, such as:

Stella Blue
Standing on the Moon
Mission in the Rain
Comes a Time

In reality, I couldn't be happier with this whole thing! Thanks dead.net! You are the best!

(Sorry...I just reread the post and saw that you only asked for three... so, um.. here are my TOP THREE: early 80's Althea, mid-late 70's Sugaree, and a good 90's Stella Blue... some of those later Stellas always bring a tear to my eye ;)

Interesting, they did a few

Interesting, they did a few repeats on this run including opening back to back shows with the same song, although there was a break between those two shows I guess, so maybe no one noticed! Oh, and four shows in a row with Dylan encores!

As for my search for this show, it's all over now...

Best Iko?

I was wondering, does anybody else think that the best Iko Iko was the one they did in Egypt, as heard on Rocking the Cradle: Egypt 78? I just love the way they perform it there. Great Donna vocals, and Bobby does some funky rhythm work.

Brent's keys

I knew this one before Jerry even sings a verse. The tone of Brent's keys was the giveaway for me. The song that follows UJB should be make this pretty easy to figure out.

What is up with deadlists.com not letting me use a comma when searching by song title? I recieved this error:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e14'

Incorrect syntax near 's'.

/deadlists/searchresults.asp, line 267

How can I search deadlists for this song or any other that has a comma??

deadlists.com's script

deadlists.com's script doesn't handle single and double quotes very well, so the best thing to do is to insert an SQL wildcard (%) in its place. For example, search for "Uncle John%s Band" instead of "Uncle John's Band". Be careful how you use the wildcard because searching for "Uncle%Band" will also return sets including 'Me and My Uncle' followed by (not necessarily consecutively) 'Playing in the Band.'

Much as

I'd love to just bash Micro$oft here, it's actually a matter of the site developers not properly encoding the user provided arguments when composing the SQL query text they are going to pass to their database. In SQL syntax, commas are used to separate items in a list and apostrophes are used to delimit strings. There are ways of properly encoding those characters so they can be included, but the onus to do so is on the web application developer, not the database provider.

do you mean apostrophe?

its either an error in their code or their engine can't handle punctuation.
but you are right. you should drop them a note. hadn't been using that site, but was checking it out, very handy
unless there's an apostrophe
