Grateful Dead
November 3
We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2011 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps MP3 download every day this month. That's 30 days of unreleased Grateful Dead tracks from the vault, selected by tape archivist David Lemieux! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some sweet swag from the Dead.
Guess the venue & date correctly and you'll be automatically entered to win the prize of the day. Each day a winner will be selected at random, so take your time and make your best guess! Answer correctly, and you will also be automatically entered for our Grand Prize - an All Music Edition of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings. What are you waiting for? Grab today's song below.
Thank you for playing 30 Days of Dead. The answer to this day's contest is:
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Copps Coliseum
03/20/92
This is drawn from the final tour featuring the two-keyboard arrangement of Vince and Bruce, and has a nice mix. Often-maligned, 1992 featured some very, very good moments and this "Shakedown Street" is one of them. From the band’s penultimate show outside of the United States.
We'll be contacting the winner shortly.

Call me unGrateful, but this is somewhat dreadful. I saw the next shows in Detroit and remember thinking, "wow-these guys are falling apart." If you skip the first eight minutes, then there is a decent jam for a few minutes, but why bother?
Thank you for releasing these!--I loved the first two this year.
This recording doesn't do that night in Hamilton any justice, perhaps. I was there, and this show was fantastic. Highlights included a full-on Dark Star, a really cool drums/space which went into a unique and spacey Other One, and a really emotive, powerful SOTM. Even this Shakedown was great to hear, live; The crowd was going nuts during the jam you point out, the acoustics in Hamilton gave this tune (a bit tinny sounding here, with Jerry's vocals a bit strained), a pounding, rafter-shaking BOOM that kinda rocked. I can still feel it in my bones, almost two decades later ;-).
Just to make you feel better about being unGrateful, I have often felt that the variable quality of taper-section recordings and (sometimes even worse) soundboards don't really convey what it was like to be there.
On the good side today: I finally finished months of work on my motorcycle.
On the bad side today: I haven't been able to keep up with posting the Songlist or any of the contest winners so here we go. Unless everyone wants to see the complete list posted here every day for thirty days I'm thinking it would be better to post a summary and a link to the files I keep on Dropbox.
Information obtained from Dead Net -- November 2011
30 Days of Dead -- Song Contest.

30 Days Of Dead - November - Grateful Dead
PLEASE NOTE: This list has no links to any of the contest songs.
1. New Potato Caboose
San Francisco, CA, Winterland Arena - 10/22/1967
Time: 09:46 Size: 22.3 MB - 22,929 KB (23,478,964 bytes)
This is one of the very few Grateful Dead recordings in the vault from 1967. But what a show! It also includes early versions of "That’s It For The Other One" and "Lovelight."
? won the drawing for the daily winner.
2. Slipknot > Franklin's Tower
Williamsburg, VA, William And Mary Hall - College Of William And Mary - 09/24/1976
Time: 13:50 Size: 31.6 MB - 32,431 KB (33,210,368 bytes)
Coming out of "Drums," this "Slipknot" is unique due to its manic double speed tempo. The band was experimenting with tempos and arrangements in 1976, although this is a one-off, it sure is cool.
? won the drawing for the daily winner.
3. Shakedown Street
Venue - Date
Time: 12:52 Size: 29.4 MB - 30,170 KB (30,896,128 bytes)
? won the drawing for the daily winner.

Congratulations to ?, the weekly winner for 11/01/2011 - 11/07/2011

Uh - 3Phase...
30 Days of Dead is different this year. There are links to each of the previous days at the top of the page. One can still download the song from previous days on these pages. They also include all of the day's commentary and song location/date. There is no information on the winners yet.
Congratulations on finishing your motorcycle!
Ed
Thanks, the bike runs great and it looks like I'll be going on a road trip with it this weekend. It's taken a lot of time and effort but very little money so I'm pretty stoked. I started with a block of rust and just chipped away everything that didn't look like a motorcycle....
Yeah, I know the contest is different this year. It's a lot more relaxed but someone asked up thread (or is it down thread on this page?) why no one was posting the song run times and file sizes and I was kind of wondering that myself. Do y'all need to form a super-committee or what?
Since I already had the songlist template from last year -- viola!(sp)
Feel free to fiddle. Or not. Last year the songs were originally only intended to be available for one day and that was it but the server kept crashing and a lot of people complained so they got links to the songs on the Rhino server.
This year: No. I had to write it or people would expect direct links to the songs because they were available last year.
So if anyone needs help getting the Download button to work on their computer just ask! I won't be online this weekend if I have anything at all to say about it but there is still a whole bunch of November left after that!

The only even slightly Dead related show I've seen since 1994 was The DSO in Ventura,Ca. back in (I think) September of this year. That was an outstanding show but it was... different somehow and the Road Trips CDs and the two 30 Days contests here at dead.net have been like water in the desert.
I got 29.5 MB for zshakes.mpg if that helps!
Right click and save, and the file is instantly finished. Click on the file and iTunes turns on, and then nothing happens. Same problem many times last year.
It's cool now.
All is right with the world again.
not workin' for me either. Tried numerous times. I'll try later or tomorrow.
yippee!!!!
Same as the others...0 bytes.
Maybe they will re-post tomorrow?
xoxo
Zap
got a network server error okb
make a second try later
Tried the Guess the Date Button, then the Download button, but both gave "download complete 0 kb" messages. Link must be broken.
Hey Y'All,
Is anyone else having trouble with downloading today's song? I was able to get the first two days' songs just fine, but this one is just coming up giving me a file called zshakes.mp3 that is Zero K (nothing in file). I've tried reloading the page and tried on a couple of different browsers.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
I'm not getting the download. I'm doing exactly what i did yesterday, successfully, but the file is 0 bytes.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
I was at this show. And the Copps shows in '90.
If Copps '92 is released, and Copps '90 isn't, then Dave is an idiot. The '90 shows are ten times better, if even Brent did blow the Hey Jude.
Copps '90 was a great time. The shows were mostly outstanding.
Didn't get there in '92, so I'll take your word for it. But no need to harsh the new guy, man.
YEP! that would be Copps Coliseum March 20, 1992!! (~):}
march 20 1992 copps coli.
Thanks!
i thought jerry garcia and ron mckernan were from cali? or was it the great AVA DEVINE of the world of porn...it's all about the dark star "feelin groovey" jam from 2-13-70 (dp4)...howard stern howard stern howard stern howard stern...BEETLEJUICE WHO ME?
painful
i know I'm exactly right so I want to know how and if I am the first to get it!!!!!
Hmm. It is difficult to focus EXACTLY which show. Jerry's vocals and Brett's organ playing are crucial here.
Good luck somebody (of course, I wish I was that somebody).
shouldn't really be a factor in determining this show ;)
I got 29.4 MB -- anyone else?
I'll be putting up another list in a few when I get home with the file length, song name and date/venue and good vibes.
Something tells me the first 4 songs are culled from releases being considered for the upcoming Dick's Picks series.
I don't see why not ;)
Just wondering about the actual download...Last year, people posted how big the file came out on their computer, which was very useful for me, as my download didn't always get the whole file and that way, I could check & try again until I got the whole thing. Just sayin', people are losing sight of the real prize -- free downloads!!!
.. posting the answer is fine ..IMHO, for those that come here it's pretty clear that no matter what there will be spoilers in these posts .. if I have a busy day I can lean on some else .. if I don't I can download, research, come up with an answer and either submit it right then or come back here to see what other's put before submitting .. it's all about choices... if people choose to post answer's cool .. I can then choose not to read forum until after I think I got it or not.
...The shape it takes could be yours to choose...
Great choice , Always enjoy a good Shakedown, if there is a Shakedown Street on the set list it usually means it was a good show. I only got to see them play it live once in Philly at the spectrum in 1988.
another great pick from the guys at the vault. thanks.
I agree with Hunter, answers shouldnt be posted in this forum. It ruins the fun to see the answers if you haven't found the show yet. Also, you should be entering the answer in a different location anyways.
But still cannot download...to my mac...not sure why....anyone???
OK-never mind...got it! WOOOOT!
One of my favorite songs.
Thanks for bringing back some great memories.
Why are people posting the answers to these questions? Did it ever occur to you that other people enjoy playing the game too? I know that many heads are full of themselves when it comes to thier tape collections and knowledge of the band. However, please be respectful and try not kill everyone else's buzz. If you know the answer (or just think you do) could you please keep it to yourself and just submit it. You'll have a better chance of winning the prize. If you're interested in winning at all. Thanks for your consideration. :^)
Don't read the comments, then you can enjoy playing the game. For others its a learning experience. Get to look at what people submit, find those songs and even if not right, get exposed to other versions. So chill and hey take your own advice and try not to kill everyone else's buzz.
I'm just sayin'. What's the point of posts like this:
"THIS IS 100% TRUE...NO OTHER DATES SHOULD BE POSTED OR GUESSED - THIS IS CORRECT.....................i went to the ol' archive, and this is the date.
done and done........ "
Sure, to post guesses is one thing. However, this seems non-inclusive and a little nasty. That's all.
...get tested in Nov. with this feature. You gotta be a taper or have listened to about 10,000 hours of dead (or like to make guesses from the archive) to get 90% correct!
or own a DeadBase !
Ill be hawking them on shakedown street soon!
Always love the slower arrangement.
Gracias!
or not, when folks supply the answer :)
thanks - Zeb
yeah that kind of takes the wind out of the sails. but i try not to see the comments before i pick, fun to try to figure it out myself, listen to it, try to guess what years it sounds like, who is playing, then hit the set lists and find shows with that song/s and take a listen. that way get to hear more music and discover new shows, like this one!. did i give it away? just some clues, then again maybe my choice was not right. which is usually the case, not just in 30 days of dead. mamma tried!
bird song from this show would have been my pick.
-peace love more free music!!
standing on the moon. dave knows how to pick killer shows for sure.
hey im replying to myself, what else is there to do at 230 am besides listen to jerry and talk to myself.
3/20/92 - Copps Coliseum?
SHAKDOWN STREET FROM 11-3-11 "30 DAYS OF THE DEAD":
March 20, 1992 Copps Coliseum - Hamilton Ontario Canada
THIS IS 100% TRUE...NO OTHER DATES SHOULD BE POSTED OR GUESSED - THIS IS CORRECT.....................i went to the ol' archive, and this is the date.
done and done........
Good for you! Somebody give this guy a pat on the back!
at archive.org they have the music from the palace at Auburn Hills music and the setlist from copps for this date and show. I am unable to verify. can you post a link with the correct songs and setlists so that i can listen before i submit a guess?
look at his page and see what i mean: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1992-03-23.116458.sonicstudios.schmit.mallick.flac16
