This was the first song of the group of "latter day" Dead songs that I was turned on to by my roommate in med school back in '98. I was instantly smitten. Such an uplifting, triumphant tune. This version has all the goods. Here, the early keyboard tickling by Vince is a big clue for me (and the daily hint helped narrow down the show selections).

Good to hear a relative newcomer to 30 DoD. Now, where's the rockin' OMSN? The rave-up Casey Jones? A super high High Time? A crisp Cassidy? Loose Lucy? Nonetheless, I'm enjoying this year immensely.

I got on the bus late, but better late than never. My first Dead & Co. show had Liberty as the encore. I thought I knew my stuff, but Liberty threw me for a loop. I wasn't hip to some of Jerry & Robert's later songs. I love this tune now.

And, I'm starting to get a little nervous about that because it's happening more frequently...

Anyone know if the Grateful Dead recorded their soundchecks?

Nailed this on the first try as well. Have gotten about four like that. Either we're really good or it's too easy. Ain't life grand?

Hey WilfredTJones,
There are some soundcheck recordings that circulate.
I've seen a bunch listed in Deadbase that I have never heard recordings of.
On the So Many Roads box set there's a version of Whiskey in the Jar that I think is from a soundcheck, though it may be a rehearsal. A few other gems here and there, tunes that were not in the repertoire at the time and stuff like that.
Here's a few...
https://archive.org/details/gd1974-09-18.sbd.snchk.miller.32292.sbeok.f…
https://archive.org/details/gd1991-03-20.aud-schk.miller.34559.sbeok.fl…
https://archive.org/details/gd1993-03-17.snchk.miller.34421.sbeok.flac16

And this search should yield a bunch. Not all of the search results are soundchecks, don't know why. And some are full shows with soundcheck tacked on as filler.
Happy listening!

Your search results on Archive will contain ANY use of that word/words that you search whether it be in the title of entry, files/song names, audio details, venue, town, comments etc etc etc...

be my favorite Robert Hunter lyrical composition. I love: "If I was a river, I'd run uphill! You call me, and you know I will!", and, "If I was an eagle, I'd dress like a duck, crawl like a lizard and honk like a truck." So much fun to sing and musically it aint half bad either. Vince's keys are magic! Thanks for this one.
A question for the scholars out there: Who's singing the very prominent bass part during the chorus(i.e.-"freedom" and "liberty")? My guess is Phil, but I'm not sure that's right. Thanks to the community for insights if any on this!

Thanks DeadPondo! My ears must be playin' tricks on me. I was originally wondering if it might be one of the Billy's, either Kreutzmann or Walton even!
Thanks for the reply.

I love how this song captures an important worldview embedded in so much of the Dead’s music. The spirit of the Revolutionary War is alive here.

Nice easy one today. Glad I didn’t have to go through all 40 plus versions. Thanks for doing this every November.

I'd tell you I got it quick -- but it took me 40 or so listens ..... not that I am complaining!

Guess I went forward instead of backward or vice versa - not sure......

9 Miles skiddin', on a 10 mile ride to find this one, but came 'cross some gems along the way. Can't complain, as this is one of my favorite past times over the past 6 years and happy to be amongst such kind buds. Happy B-day Dave, and may we please get some Pig? Chinatown Shuffle?
