30 Days of Dead November 20
I remember this show fondly. Seventh row seats were the best I ever got at a Dead concert! (Date is correct -- I still have my ticket stub!)
Are we sure on the dates?
Just finished listening to this show the other day
So the peel reference was to the banter after From The Heart of Me where Billy (I think) says "there's chiquitas on the river". Chiquitas > banana > peel slowly (Velvet Underground album with banana on the cover). Wouldn't want to make it too easy! :)
two days later
Deadheadned - based on the clue you dropped yourself, I'm surprised you don't get the 1/2 step.
thanks, Gen, i just got it !!
Chasing the 1/2 step lee combo drove me bananas, then I finally took it outta there and found it.
yeah, i don't get the 1/2 step either. and i'm sure i've got the correct show (see my comment earlier)
Don't understand the "peel" clue either, but thanks UESNYC for the 1/2 Step. Got it with that one!
Apparently, we have George Lowell (RIP) to thank for Bobby's slide-forays ...this 30 Days 2013 Stagger Lee doesn't slide off the proverbial cliff.
Thought I had it right without clues, then checked clues before submitting, had to re-check, and found the right one, as I was off by less than a week. Thanks for the deadicated players (double entendre intended).
Buy me a gin fizz blove? You bet!
Is Bob releasing air from a balloon??
It's how I feel.
...he packs a forty five! five.
If it's the show I just listened to....a great one to add to the game
i'm 99.9% certain i've got this right (listening to archive syncing nicely with this), but my guess doesn't connect with the earlier hints of "Peel".
am i still missing something?
100% on My pick today no idea what the peel reference is...my clue would be 1/2 step....
This will be an interesting reveal….I'm pretty sure Half-Step wasn't played at the show in question.
Yeah, I'm 100% sure of my choice but didn't get it from the "Peel" reference. Not sure what that means. Maybe tomorrow ya'll can fill us in on the reference.
there are several shows to choose from, which requires careful listening between very similar renditions. both Jer and Bob give you clues.
at least, i think i'm right.
I live a mile away from this venue.
I think I know what show the "peel" reference was for, but that show did not match up as well an earlier one I found. That said, I ran into sync issues; the timing kept drifting and that complicated the listening. Seemed like the same performance though. We will know for sure in the morning.
Or, you know, I'm wrong!
this show is not New Haven
No, but it does play a role in when this show happened and is good base to start with. Bobby will tell you all about it ; )
Song selection so far has been ok.....still waiting for a: Miss 1/2 Step, Terrapin, Scar>Fire, Eyes, Loser, Bird Song, BE Women, Cassidy, Bertha, and Wheel! Come on now , make it happen pleas...as always pleas give us these these tunes from years 1981-1985
I see people requesting this era and just don't get it. Though it is the period that I started going to shows and enjoyed myself thoroughly, any objective listening will reveal that it was the bands weakest era. Jerry was deep in the depths of his addiction and often fumbled the lyrics and the leads. He became withdrawn from the audience and simply appeared to be going through the motions too often. The Drums/Space was often the highlight because there were no expectations for him to fall short of. Jerry's brilliance was what drove the band to the heights that few bands could ever obtain. Without his sparkle, they lost that edge. While Brent was definitely having a strong period it can't come close to Keith Godchaux's work in the 70's. For my money, the single drummer lineup from the early 70's can't be beat. The band was nimble and powerful. But hey, that's just me.
I generally agree with you ChinaRider. I love the early 70s one drummer line-up. I think '72 was their best year. I love Keith. I love old Pigpen Dead. But I'd disagree that early 80s Dead can't stand up. It's a different band every era. Seems to me they were far less consistent about quality in the early 80s, but there are some absolutely stunning shows in the same era.
How many times I heard this live.
Jerry comes back strong vocally for this one
"Not only is that mother big, he packs a .45uh". Always one of my favorite first set tunes they did.
Twenty days and NO Pigpen?!!! For shame!!!!
I have been wondering about this omission for years. I have to assume there must be some rights problem. I know most of his stuff was covers, and that would be a problem, but what about Operator, Easy Wind, Two Souls, Chinatown Shuffle? I love what dead.net does with this 30 days project and don't want to complain, but I am mystified by NO PIGPEN, the heart and soul of the original Grateful Dead. I would love some explanation.
I could be wrong, but I think another "issue" would be that Two Souls and Chinatown have been mostly released (Europe 72) - any of those not released yet will be from only one possible run of shows. A live Operator wouldn't take too long to guess (not that I'd mind). That leaves Alligator and Easy Wind. 2010 included three of these...maybe we'll get another one, or both of them, in the last 10 days this year?
Mama's sweet biscuits, I cannot tell you how I would freak for a fresh version of Alligator!
We had tix, listened to the Capitol Theater show and knew there was no way... still we went, dosed, waited, lights went up, Bobby came out, and we had a long eventful night in New Haven....
Yepper! And.....after narrowing down the field as Timwsiy and Arm state below, the candidate shows have several very, very, similar and aPeeling versions.
First time I'd heard Bobby on the slide guitar was late in this same year, way down south. The electric piano may have been a Yamaha grand.
I just listened to this show yesterday :)
Police said the 11,000 rock fans were orderly when the announcement was made from the stage an hour after the concert was to have started. "The kids were beautiful," said police Lt. Robert Ferguson. "There was no problem at all."
Anyone else having trouble downloading Stagger Lee?
I get the 'Download is starting' screen and then nothing happens.
no problem downloading here
Another official hint that narrows the possibilities to just a handful of shows.
I thought this one was a gimme, but I had to do some searching. Learned more about the Dead, though. That's the fun of it!
There are multiple years, given the hint. Only listening can narrow it down. The hint alone puts about two dozen possible shows in play.
