30 Days of Dead November 26
------ TURN OFF FUTURE & FORM -----
It's with deep appreciation and gratitude for you, the fans, that we'll be giving away an MP3 download every day this month. That's 30 days of unreleased Grateful Dead tracks from the vault, selected by Dead archivist and producer David Lemieux! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win some sweet swag from the Dead.
Guess the venue and date correctly and you'll be automatically entered to win our Grand Prize - a prize pack featuring our 2014 releases, merch, and more.
Our friends at Dead.net said they were going to release the 2013 version of 30 Days of Dead in 320kbps files. Not mostly 320 kbps files, with some 192kbps files which may be part of an official release at some uncertain date in the undefined future, but 320kbps files with no qualifications.
Yes, I do thank them for releasing these tunes in any form, but one hard lesson I've learned is don't over promise and under deliver. That's what they're doing here.
the download is only 192 kbps. all the others were 320.
320 vs 192, Don't like this or that--
Some come to laugh their past away
Some come to make it just one more day
Whichever way your pleasure tends
If you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind
Most of us are just here for the fun I think-
Not everybody's Doin' That Rag!
I have an old cassette of set II. One must keep their mindset on the grander landscape of things. Again deepest gratitude.
Nothing left to do but smile smile smile after hearing this one. That's not a hint, just advice:)
Beautiful version. Keep it sly indeed!
Reading your Lowell George comment was all I needed to confirm my suspicions about today's FOTD. The 88 Oxford Plains shows (for a multitude of reasons) are forever seared into my memory (Little Feat opened). No Lowell but a solid performance by Craig Fuller.
When it comes to searching the archive for the correct version of each day's song, the fun part is listening to all the wonderful versions...especially today's song! So many gorgeous, slow K&D FOTDs out there, particularly this year! Listened to some great fall FOTDs before I happened upon the correct version from an earlier season.
I mean we haven't gotten the following: SCAR>Fire, Eyes, Estimated, Loser, Miss 1/2 step, Cassidy, BE Women, Bird Song, Row Jimmy, Iko, Stella Blue, Morning Dew, H>S>Franklins, Jack Straw, Wheel, Terrapin, etc.
We HAVE gotten: Mingleweir, FOD, Esau, Music never stopped, Corrina(!), Cream Puff, the random 4/23/84 Brent tune, China>Rider, Stranger, Passenger....
Am I'm missing something here, are we all on the same page of what the core "good tunes" are?!?! I guess each to their own, I'm sure hoping the last four days are BIG tunes & COMBINATIONS...PLEAS
Quote from top of page: "It's with deep appreciation and gratitude for you, the fans, that we'll be giving away an MP3 download every day this month. Nowhere in this statement does it say we will get BIG tunes and Combos....what it DOES say, though, is...."30 days of unreleased Grateful Dead tracks from the vault, selected by Dead archivist and producer David Lemieux! Intrigued?"
YES!! I'm intrigued! And forever grateful that this exists! Thank You David L. and dead.net for all the tunes you give.....after all this is the month of Giving. edit: rant over! :-)
Who cares what DL plays? It's the thrill of the hunt, the chance to discover something new, or rediscover something you'd forgotten about...
If you're looking to bolster your collection, there are better ways and better (higher digital quality) sources than these 30 mp3s...
In the end, it doesn't matter what he chooses - he's sharing tunes with us, for free - I think that's pretty cool :)
Head - "Hey Garcia, play St. Stephen!"
Garcia - "Hey man, whaddya gotta be, a cop? We'll play whatever we like..."
Weir- "Which isn't to say you won't like it too..."
4 more days...
Agree RV3....... They get you to this site to try and sell you everything "Dead" under the sun. At least if they are showing there appreciation it could be for killer versions of the core "good tunes"...just sayin.
that's all there is to it
Of the 70 possible K and D slow FOTDs some are officially released so its narrowed down a wee bit. I listened to about 30 before I got there. It's between two officially released FOTDs.
Correction: One of two said officially released FOTDs didn't make the cut.
A 5-star show that I am sure most of us have heard at least a thousand times. According to records, contrary to what is stated below, NOT a Betty Board.
Check the credits for recording engineer the day before
(a multi-date box set)and more importantly for the day after (Dick's Picks). You'll see that Betty Cantor Jackson was on the soundboard.
It wouldn't be the first time I was ever wrong. The list I have of all of Betty's soundboards does not include this night. Of course, the list could be incorrect. I'll copy and paste it up here tomorrow
An amazing FOTD. Jerry does some great guitar work after the 5 minute mark, and Donna's harmony is right on! I'm sure I hear some hum from the amps. After the song, there seems to be notes of a very faint tune with a brass instrument...Boz Skaggs? Al Stewert? Regardless, Betty sure made some nice recordings.
Not sure what the Little Feat reference is, below, but I did see them play 2 weeks after this Grateful Dead show, with Pablo Cruise! I'd love to get my hands on a recording of that, from Macky Auditorium.
Lowell George (R.I.P.) was phenomenal.
you can hear radio interference/ bleedthrough throughout the entire show, i guess it was on the master tape. kind of like as if the house music was playing all night or someone onstage was listening to the radio. fun.
I'll be On The Road again 11/30 and unable to capture the last song offered all weekend, is there a sight online that will have it up if Dead. Net doesn't?
if i remember correctly, the links will stay up on the site for a few days (weeks?) after November ends. you can also go to http://deadroots.net/ where they have 2010-2012 for downloading as well.
Cool deal -thanls
Lossless legs has the 2010 2011 and 2012 up now...so I'm sure this year will soon follow....It's a great site (my fav on the net) and u will find so much music on there that you just might hafta buy a few more HDD's !! Heh-Heh
.....what a sly version...love it when they trickle through FOTD...
I always enjoyed the slower version, like this one. From the first time I heard the boys playing FOTD like this I was hooked
This must be an amazing venue, anyone ever been there?
One wonders . . . Just how hard is it to add a quality control step of checking the file attributes? Especially after the 192kbps loose lucy. Well, not very hard, at all. So, it must be intentional. Just wondering . . . *Why* would someone decide that while all these other files, for all the 30 days of the dead years, are 320kbps, and that fact is indeed advertised and made part of the appeal in their own words, but these two are going to be 192kbps? I don't feel entitled to anything, I'm not mad, I'm just curious about the how and the why. I don't believe the Grateful Dead world is going to come crashing down because I ask questions. Doesn't anyone else wonder about why this has happened?
Cool, thanks for the explanation, guys! So, if one is all hopped up about it, one can substitute a self-made 320kbps track from the official releases, once they're received. The explanation seems plausible and my work-around will work, for me. Thanks!
In the past, some of the tunes that were scheduled for upcoming release on a Dave's picks, road trips or other set (e72) would be released here in a lower quality version
that's what I was thinking as well. Most definitely a good sign of things to come, no? ;)
Looks like this one needs to be replaced with a 320kbs version...
like Little Feat said
doobie brothers anyone? was this a tapeover? am i tripping again? like always when you finally hear it your know for sure. interesting choice again tonight, not the song but the version. not a complaint by the way., but why this recording? 30 DAYS! love this game. (just read why i heard what i thought i heard)
hornsby, i saw the comment, but i don't hear the tapeover; no doobies for me. what tracks are doing that to you?
and between other tunes, like after FOTD you can hear the radio DJ. adds to the ambiance, like as if the band was listening to a little transistor radio onstage. and to reiterate, this show needs to be released bacause upon further listening it is about to bust out of it's cage. release the hounds! but with so much killer music to choose from i guess how can one go wrong. but this one deserves a cd case and it needs to be in my car. (hearing frampton- "i'm in you" right now) besides the other voices in my head telling me it's time, ...wait i've said too much.
to the rest of the show, particularly second set and it kicks serious ass, so i see why this recording was picked despite it's quirky character, on fiye-yah! me want copy dave!?
A lower quality might be indication of future release, so you may get your wish!
thinking a follow up box set 2 to one i wish i could get, (are you listening santa) since i opted for dave's picks next year instead.
pretty fast, but on closer listen i was fooled. quite a few start out this way, and with the tape cut makes matching up pretty interesting. glad i took a closer listen before i entered my guess. but only a matter of time, then you will be mine, friend... only 4 more, make it last
