These two tracks from the Grateful Dead Records era we joined through the early 1980s mostly during the time when the Dead weren't playing Help On The Way>Slipknot!

A Little Misleading

"A double dose of Jerry to open the show" was a bit misleading, if you ask me . . . Oh, well! Fun listening to so many options yesterday morning.

Playing to win?

Really? I thought this was about having fun and hanging out with some other people who love the music as much as I do. I've played every year, worked hard on most (but certainly benefited from clues when I was stuck) and have never won and couldn't care less. If you don't want to see the clues, just don't read the comments.
Happy birthday Dave!! Just give me a good dark star and it's all gravy.

Exactly.

You are correct sir. Everyone deserves a chance to win (and I so wish that included people of all nations): The searchers, the lucky "take a stab in the dark, throw the dart at the map" people and the people that like the hints. The winner is chosen at random. No one deserves it more than another. Don't think about odds or winning. Just have fun searching & listening.

Good stuff Brassinthegrass. Unlike the split of saint from sailor. I thought Franklins worked well away from help slip. A truly unique version

I got it but.........

Trust yer gut! That's what I learned from today's listening adventure. A distinct 2-3 year period came to me within the first minute of today's track. "Great," I say to myself. "This one's going to be easy."

3 hours later and I've slouched my way back here looking for hints. And what I found led me right back to where I started and what I knew all along(all good hints and thanks to those who posted). Just goes to show you don't never know.

BTW for all you Franklinsophiles out there check out this unique version from 1979. You'll want to put on your disco shoes first.

Franklinsophiles

I've been diagnosed with that.

If you love that 12/4/79 one, and you love that catchy riff that Brent came up with for Franklin's and used a bit around this time, I think it works best and is taken the farthest on 11/5/79. It had an unusual official release as a download only Road Trips. It was two shows labelled Road Trips Full Show, and included 11/5/79 and 11/6/79. The Franklin's isn't quite as long as on 12/4, but it's really really good.

PIX

I didn't realize Pix has the official rule book on how the 30 days worked. As I now understand you are not allowed to ask for assistance or post any clues unless you put enough time into your search. And God forbide if you don't have the skillz to perform a proper search. Don't even bother tuning in

Are special skillz needed?...maybe a good ear helps more

Some knowledge of timelines and the sounds of an era along with a DeadBase is all I've got. Some days the search drags on but giving away too many hints will only give away the answer and increase the odds of winning the daily prize. The search is fun, but isn't winning the real reason to play??

Winning? No way.

No way. The search & listening & having fun are the only reasons. I NEVER expect to win at all. And don't really care about prizes. I have enough stuff. Searching is fun!

i thought

i thought the only rule is to have fun. i use http://www.dead101.com/timgd.htm gives you a decent timeline of band lineup. not sure about the accuracy but its helpful in narrowing it down when you determine who is playing, especially keys, donna and drum. could be helpful if you don't possess the skillz.

Clues?

This one took me longer than I wanted, but finally happy!
I've found clues are sometimes helpful, and sometimes a waste of time. Best to trust yourself and enjoy the music (though the Walton clue helped me immensely the other day).
And I forgot, Happy Birthday Dave!
Thanks!

30 Daisies

Not a Hint: A 1/2 slip>Franklin's combo was played the night after my very first show, which I enjoyed listening to thanks to playing' in the band of 30 Daisies, even though it is not the correct answer to today's offering. I had often listened to my first show, which made it on to the 30 year Boxilla, but had not given the night after much more than a glimpse, and glad that has been rectified.

Indeed. Pretty sure I got

Indeed. Pretty sure I got today - but wow - this endeavor makes you realize you what you're missing. It's hard to listen to the archive/relisten feed and be sure it's correct. You struggle a bit not because you chose the wrong show, but because the version Dave's throwin' down here is so friggin' crisp and beautiful it's a challenge to pick up the detail in what's available online.

So Happy Birthday Dave - thank you for a real good time.

yeah

for a band that never played the same song exactly the same twice the past few selections have had some pretty darn close matches. but when it does match there is no doubt. you just gotta poke around. sometimes it does take hours. funny i thought the archive version had better sound, maybe it was just louder

songs & cities...

there is a song that is about to come after the 2nd song of this combo & it's the same song that many felt was missing from another song from earlier this month of many songs...
also...
Bobby feels as though this city is made to look 2nd rate compared to another city...

Dave's Hint today sent me on a wild goose chase!

"A double dose of jerry to start the show" leads one down a time consuming rabbit hole!
Since I know that this Fender Rhodes electric piano had a specific tenure I was able to narrow the options down to when it was used (thanks to my book 'grateful dead gear') .... but then I was stumped for so long with my chosen pool of shows not giving me any easy answers ... until I scrolled the forum and found a user's helpful hint which brought me to open up the search to a wider 'set' of possibilities and
!@!@!@!@!@!@BOOM SHACK-A-LACKA@!@!@!@!@! there it was ... that warm up guitar intro and then Brent tickling his keys as jerry sings 'sat down and cried'in the exact manner as Dave's sample .... success!
warning: Dave is playing fast and loose w/ the hints today y'all.
AND A FUN HINT: I GUESS A PEARL OF WISDOM CAN BE GLEANED FROM THIS SHOW AS FINDING IT WAS LIKE A LOST SAILOR FINALLY FINDING HIS HARBOR.

also I learned today thru this search how many shows from this era are lacking soundboards.

Anybody know how or why there aren't more boards up during this time?

Fast & loose

Speaking of fast & loose, the dead net player had a faster version than the site with the matching answer that I found. Kept going out of sync within 5-10 seconds. Set players to phase....

Yeah right?

Also, pretty funny that many of the soundboards that are out there are missing the first few seconds of Half-Step, and are patched with AUD sources.

Also also, I was mildly surprised to discover that as late as 1979, the Dead were playing a place called the Billerica Forum in Billerica, Mass.

Hints

If you want to search till the sun goes down then that is your option , and no one Faults you and is perfectly fine. If that is how you enjoy the 30 days I would not read the comments till you make your selection. There are people that enjoy the search but not for an extended period of time and the hints and comments make the search more enjoyable and are very much appreciated . Happy Searching everyone whichever way you like to do it

If you're not willing to do

If you're not willing to do what it takes and put forth some effort, or you simply don't have the skills, perhaps you should enjoy the tunes for what they are and let the people play who legitimately want to do it and who deserve to win. There is nothing wrong with just listening to the music play.

Love this combo!

Love this combo! Not an era I visit enough. Jerry and the keyboard player do some nice trading of licks during the transition. Must of felt like a Field of Dreams for the keyboard player to be steeping into the lineup after being in a side band.

Fender Rhodes....

Man... I've been up and down these shows, and I've realized two things. One: I'm not very good at picking them out. And two: My trust, appreciation and respect for what Dave does increased ten-fold (and I had a ton before November).

Looking forward to what he has in store for 2018.....

The Keys & Jerry's Timing

Not saying I know 100%,
but I think I nailed this one.
Start with who's on keys.
Next, the length of the combo.
Finally, listen to Jerry's unique timing of the lyrics and his exchange with the keys.

"I mean, who do you think
is gonna believe it
When you tell them you
got the keys to the rain?"

Hints

Thanks for saying what some of us have been thinking for a long time!! Especially frustrating are the people who cry for help first thing in the morning. I kinda get it if you've spent all day searching and the sun has come up and gone back down and you're still lost, but at least try before asking for help. Otherwise you're just being lazy.

Ouch! Cut.. need band aid

A clumsy cut at the end for today's medley.
Did my search, looked at 2-3 shows.
And I chose one to listen that looked ok.
That was the correct answer!
Every once in a while I get lucky like that.
Well it may not be their shiniest pearl ever.
Hope they fix the error on year for Day 7.
I listened to some more of the show.
Crazy sounds pre and post drums.
Hope to get more done today.
What with getting the answer early.
I won't have to search for 8 hours!
Leaving soon for work
Luck to all!

.... if 1994 is correct, I nailed it without a lot of confidence in my selection. I listened to the 1993-94 versions, couldn't find a distinction (even with the extra hints) and took a leap...

No winner for yesterday? Maybe no one choose 1974? Haha
