30 Days of Dead

Who needs a miracle everyday? We sure do and we bet you could use one too!

Consider this our gift to you for being so darn loyal... Each day in November we will be giving away a high-quality 320Kbps MP3 download. That's 30 days of unreleased Grateful Dead tracks from the vault, selected by Dead archivist and producer David Lemieux! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win a 2015 Grateful Dead calendar.

Most of you know the drill by now, but for those, that don't, here's the deal:

You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand all November long and win a prize while you're at it.

Today's Song

My Brother Esau
Hint: A Weir-Barlow number that was only played for about four years by the Grateful Dead.

obscure year

This sounded immediately to me like a more refined version, so I decided to start my search on the later end of that aforementioned 4 year span. Didn't expect to get this one today, but I got lucky with my 2nd listen in a year very much unexplored with these ears. Agree that Phil really brings it with his bass guitar here. The tone on this recording is so much better than what you can hear on the Auds on the Archive.

Thank you thank you thank you. Finally a clue to lead me right there. The audience sound must have thrown me the first time around.

Got in on the second try - Phil's bass tone is the key.

keep on keepin on

only took 4 more shows to listen to after falling asleep while tring to figure this one out last night. just couldn't hang on. interesting how esau wasn't in the repertoire for long but got pretty decent play while in the line-up. listening to this show (besides bringing back all sorts of great memories-first time i hit most of the shows "on tour") it also is interesting how the dead had so many songs under their belt and like in this show some only get played a handful of times. as in wonder what made them not like a song to play it anymore or what. so many songs, so many roads...

agreed

I came across a show last night while looking for the UJB from 12/26/69. They were waiting for Bill to get to the show so Jerry and Bob play some acoustic duet stuff. Good banter between songs. They played "The Master's Bouquet" which Jerry didn't totally know (the talk before the tune is pretty cool) but the vox were really good in my opinion, especially for an off-the-cuff tune. They could have polished it and put it in somewhere but it was seemingly lost forever.

Anyhow, check out 12/26/69. The first part is great!

Ya think this one would be easy

Phil bass in the intro is a dead give away, but you have to listen very very close.

I'll narrow it down

I'm guessing it falls between 1983 and 1987.

Happy wandering :0

Hints?

Official hints this year have been much better then past years but today's is back to the usual non-hint. It one was one they played. Yeah, thanks for narrowing it down - NOT! The hint about current events I thought was gonna help. Thought I heard Bob mumble something about Lybia but I'm not sure what he said. I've listened to about all of them. I must've past it by. Good thing I don't have a life.

a clue

If you listen carefully, there's a 'current events' clue in there somewhere. I'm loving Phil's tone on this one.

is worth a listen or two or three with headphones. helluva bozo dodo. can't complain about the choices this year. curious if in the final days a long lost improvisation isn't in the cards. seems over dew...

Go see or listen to the Neville brothers. The Kings of cowbells. Saw them warm up for the Dead more then anyone else. Funky funky.

Bless you Brother Esau

"And before the back rub line was done,
His Backstage Pass was mine."
I refer to a kind stranger as my brother Esau, having been in a back rub line sitting on the floor, at the SF Civic at New Year's run, between sets, for I hated not being able to see the band playing and would otherwise have been in the cavernous room watching Volley Ball near the tapers. This brother walks up and asks if he can cut across the line in front of me. I see he has a backstage pass on his thigh staring straight at me. I say facetiously, "sure if I can have that." And without hesitation, he peels the pass off his left thigh and sticks it on my right shoulder, steps over my legs, and he was gone. My friends and I are looking at this pass, glowing on my shoulder, and the ramifications suddenly hit us in unison, a door has been opened. The time had come to move from the back rub line towards the region hitherto unknown and unforeseen lands amidst the Band's family and friends. Bless you Brother Esau.

love all the different ways this tune comes out of whatever or nothing and forms into the diggity jig that it is. unfortunately i am falling asleep in my headphones and not paying attention to matching to todays selection, guess i'll have to call it a night and hope for better wandering tomorrow.

Yes, the intro's where it's at.

So, you'll find it.

And when you do, you'll say, "I've been here before!"

Sample of "new" 1971 show?

There were comments by TPTB that tapes of a complete, previously non-circulated 1971 show were returned to the Dead, how about a sample from that one???

Or maybe even box set from April 1971? I'd even take a "mini-box" from the Manhattan Center shows............

Release of a clean copy of 12/5/71 as a single show release? Oh please please please!!!!!

Is there a copy of 11/17/71 in the vault? I've been craving that one for years!!!

Back to my coffee,

Doc G

Got this one pretty quickly. I'm not too familiar with this era to be honest but I LOVE Phil's sound on this one! He's all over it!

Another thought...

We got a Space last year. Think we'll get a Drumz this year? If anyone can nail that one down I'd be pretty impressed! Not sure I'd have the patience for it...
