30 Days of Dead

If you've been part of the Dead.net community for the past few years, then you know we're on a mission to make a miracle every day in the month of November. This year is no different.

As a token of our appreciation for making 2017 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps MP3 download every day this month. That's 30 days of unreleased Grateful Dead tracks from the vault, selected by Dead archivist and producer David Lemieux! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you a chance daily to win a limited-edition 7" single, the 1st release from our 2017 series.

Here's how it works:

You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand all November long.

Guess the venue and date correctly and you'll be automatically entered to win the prize of the day. Each day a winner will be selected at random, so take your time and make your best guess! Answer correctly, and you will also be automatically entered for our Grand Prize - a copy of our SOLD OUT MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT boxed set.

Get started here.

Ooo, thank you

I'll do my best to remain humble, but a small piece of me is looking forward to receiving the prize of a single. The bonus was winning with the show in my hometown! As always, the bigger prize has been the journey for the last 6 years hunting them down with all of you. Here's to another 6, cheers.

Candyman

I don't know what's up with the wobbling Candyman, but my copy has no wobble so I just swapped it out.

I like these 30 days run, I don't care about a few repeats. I throw a 30 day folder on when I want a nice mix of songs.

They're FREE!!!

Had a guy in the store the other day and asked if he wanted a free lighter or pack of papers. His reply, "what type of lighter?" I looked at him and said "a FREE one!!"

Best thing about free is you don't have to keep it.

Just Grateful for this 30 Day

I now know more than I did before
With a new appreciation for the score
So like it or not, I will not say
Just Grateful for this 30 Day
While some gifts be heaven sent
Don't mind the mind-bender's bent
If freedom means nothing left to lose
How 'bout some '68 blues?

My First Show

Wow thanks, 7-7-81 was my first show. After the 1st set I thought it was the best concert I ever saw.

We've been there before too...

Double keyboard attack!! Agree w/ John Bonham; it's not as daunting as it may seem. Plenty of musical cues are in there, especially with the grand piano playing.

I honestly could have gone for the song that came next at this show for today's offering, but I'm not complaining - really! So thankful and grateful for every DoD this month :)

OK I will complain

about the repeats. This has happened before. It's silly, really. Out of the thousands upon thousands of songs that were played live over the 30 yrs, how can they manage to give us a repeat? Especially this track! Couldn't have been a High Time or a Black Peter or a 20 minute PITB. Someone (hard to believe it could be DL!) obviously isn't paying attention to what's been offered up in previous years.

I will also take this opportunity to rant about the sound quality of yesterday's track. There is no excuse for that! There are obviously better-sounding versions out there, so if that's what they have in the vault then I would expect better. When folks are saying they aren't even going to download it because it's a waste of data due to poor sound quality, that's pretty fucking sad.

OK, end rant. Have a lovely Monday everyone. At least we still have 10 more days to look forward to *hopefully* fresh, unreleased tracks :)

Repeats

I'm with you, smallz. I know, I know, it's free music! We love 30 Days! but some of us just have a hard time understanding repeating a song when we look forward to a new one every day, as promised. Really, there's no excuse for it. I am away from my computer these days and cannot check my files, but we have had close to ten repeats now, including FOUR in one year. WTF?? After the first one I thought, sh** happens, but surely once it becomes known it won't happen again. Attention to detail, people!
I am not ungrateful. Just a little disappointed. Here's to 10 more NEW songs!
Peace y'all.

The version here - the wartbly version, has the correct word, WITH...

Outrage!

Somewhere, somehow our constitutional rights have been violated. Someone should pay for the pain caused by free songs. Gentlemen! To the barricades!

Number 1 in Turlock

Morning rockers!!!!

No need in further analysis of the classics, they've been described ad nauseum. Instead, let's check out a "lesser light", a "typical average" show from November 1971:

https://archive.org/details/gd1971-11-20.sbd.miller.92908.sbeok.flac16

Energetic, 14 song first set, Cowboy Bobby, rockin' doublet of Casey Saturday Night to close. Second set gallops straight outta the gate with the big Truckin'/Other One/Ramble On Rose jam and closes with a solid NFA suite, that includes the "China Cat jam" they were working into it at that time.

Was this Bobby's first reference to Turlock prior to Truckin'? How did that come about?

Back in the day, this was commonly misidentified as 6/17/72. D'Oh!!! And back then, it was a tough listen. Thanks, Mr Miller, for providing us with a listenable copy. Definitely worth a listen!!

You know where to find me. Is everybody ready for December? Have you been good little boys and girls???

Rock on,

Doc

Yesterday Hint

I don't know if this was intended or if i joined up a series of imaginary dots but this was my journey yesterday using Dave's Hint:

Candyman obviously comes off the American Beauty album, i thought at first the second beauty and the awful recording was from the show that Miles Davies Black beauty Album was recorded on 10 April 1970 supporting the dead with apparently no recording of the dead show. But several things didn't stack up, gerry's voice, electric vs acoustic etc. So the second beauty could mean a second American beauty, namely America the beautiful. The lyrics in part refer to a trip through Kansas in July and July was also the publishing date of the lyrics, 4th of July etc. So search for Kansas State yielded some shows but none in July, then realized could be the other half of Kansas City in Missouri, 2 possiblities. I keyed off what happened at the end of the song with the buzz/note.
