30 Days of Dead

If you've been part of the community for the past few years, then you know we're on a mission to make a miracle every day in the month of November. This year is no different.

As a token of our appreciation for making 2017 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps MP3 download every day this month. That's 30 days of unreleased Grateful Dead tracks from the vault, selected by Dead archivist and producer David Lemieux! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you a chance daily to win a limited-edition 7" single, the 1st release from our 2017 series.

Here's how it works:

You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand all November long.

Guess the venue and date correctly and you'll be automatically entered to win the prize of the day. Each day a winner will be selected at random, so take your time and make your best guess! Answer correctly, and you will also be automatically entered for our Grand Prize - a copy of our SOLD OUT MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT boxed set.

Get started here.

Today's Song

"Scarlet Begonias">"Fire On The Mountain"
Hint: A double dose of Jerry-sung songs, common from 1977-1995.

Yesterday's answer...

Paris, France, Palais des Sports
Although Seastones (Phil and Ned Lagin's electronic interlude played between the first and second sets at Grateful Dead shows between June and October 1974) was usually a stand-along set, occasionally the rest of the band would join in and they would segue into Grateful Dead music, like here.

Relying on my ears & analysis. Reading the comments after I search & send my entry. Once again the daily dose of Dead is from my home state.

I finally got it

I'm new to this, and it took me about half a day of listening to an endless number of Scarlet>Fire versions, but I think I have it now. The intro is unique, but the clues helped verify my choice.

Thanks y’all!

In all these! Thank you, Dave, and all involved with bringing us all this fun every November!
I looked at today’s offering last night, just after midnight, and knew right away, this one might take awhile. So I quickly jumped to the end to see if I could decipher what was next. I thought I had it, went through a few, and the next one I needed to check was it, but I didn’t do that until today. The winner wasn’t yet posted, and so I didn’t see that until today. Thank you!
This is an incredible Scarlet Fire, the Fire especially! Excellent show, too!
Amazing, that Hunter penned these lyrics while working with Mickey in his studio, while the hills around them where ablaze, and the fire approaching!
Also, amazingly, Mount Saint Helens blew her top, while “Fire on the Mountain” was being performed in Portland OR on 6/12/80!
“If mercy’s in business I wish it for you. More than just ashes when your dreams come true.”

Almost a blaze still you don't feel the heat, it takes all you got just to stay on the beat.

Dealt with this situation many a time.

Killer Combo!

This Combo and Eyes have always been my favorites. Thanks! Seem to be going in circles today, but am confident I'm close......

More than just ashes

Amazing recording! My first instinct was real close but somehow missed this show, so it took me awhile to circle back. Thanks for the tips!

Long distance runner.......

That's Me! Ran a little interwebnet marathon today looking for this one. Broke my own rule that first hunches are usually correct. Oh well, I enjoyed the entire ride.

Already lined up for tomorrow!

What a Monster!!

I started looking in completely the wrong place, and then thought it might be in a completely different place before putting together some obvious clues and using my well worn 30 day instinct to find it on the first listen in another completely different place. Love the echo when the tracks line up, especially when one is faster and you have to constantly hit the pause button. Thanks, Dave. Sometimes it helps to have cameras and binoculars so you don't feel like a lab rat.

A Monster Indeed - Wow

This one was right down my alley - having seen the Dead twice the previous year and then this year, I recognized the sound right off. But this was a new one for me - and what a beautiful monster it is!
Agree with you on the tracking - when the speeds are slightly off it makes for an interesting sonic adventure! I wonder what goes into the remastering of these selections upon which Dave does such great work.
Dave, if you're listening, maybe sometime you could go into a little detail about what you actually do (selecting the source, patching, pitch and speed adjustment, etc.) for these gems - I think it would be fascinating for many of us.

Ahhhh, music to my ears

Always excited for the Scarlet to come to 30 DOD! And this is a killer version. Thank you!

I used to chase the boys around to get my Scarlet. Yes, Dave, I know Morning Dew is the bomb (are you ever going to share one of those, please please??), but Scarlet Begonias was my jam. Takes all kinds '-) My tour buddy's brass ring was China>Rider and I pined for the Scarlet>Fire.

Most vivid crowd memory during a Fire - no Scarlet, was awfully scarce that year :( - was at Rich Stadium. 1986. Went to the back of the floor during break and watched jugglers throw their pins back and forth to each other. Well they kept it up when the music started. It was so cool to watch one pin fly REALLY high to the beat of the music.

FI-re (high pin), fire on the MOUN-tain (high pin).

Now, THIS show had the neighborhood up in arms thinking the world was going to end if the Grateful Dead and those drug-crazed hippies came around. But cooler heads prevailed and the circus came to town anyways. Threw down a terrific show. Yeah, I'd vote for an official release. Lots of fun, start to finish.

Scarlet/Fire Combo Meal!!

Congrats to Eyes43 for the big win with France. There should be fast food joints with a Scarlet/Fire combo meal. If you can't do spicy, there's the China/Rider plate. LOL. I'm loving Dave's choice for today. One of the longest versions I've heard. The Willard dedication is funny as hell too. Only Bob.

Good memories

My wife was from this town, spent many Thanksgivings there; even saw the Dead there before we had ever met. And we've visited this show here before. I wonder if it's due for commercial release. It's from a slightly underrepresented year.

Yesterday I took a break! Today an early vocal flub is key

Well I tried to listen yesterday but just couldn’t get into hours of seastones so I am 16/17. Gotta guess today’s! Jerry vocal flub and the keys will help narrow it down.... so off to archive

I think everyone should be entered to win just for listening to Seastones. Musical wankery at its finest.

I must agree with you wholeheartedly.
Back in the day equipped with the right 'enhancements' this might have been a visually surreal experience. Today...not so much. You nailed it with the phrase "musical wankery".

Hotter than hell in the summertime...

Listen to the rest of the show, too - I recommend the Wagner/Miller source for the you-are-there experience - and hoist a few Cream Ales to top it all off ;)

Wow, another tasty half hour

Wow, another tasty half hour medley! Respectfully, I don't give a good rodent's hindquarters if a word or two is dropped here or there or they hit a few clunkers, I ALWAYS love Scarlet-Fire. Keep the peace, folks! and thanks again, Dave & Co.!

Edit: This Fire is really really good! Really.

based on my daily pre research in deadbase, matching a time frame, listening to it, and getting confused with cream ale, i figure about 100 or more to listen to.

I initially read your post as "between 79 & 80". I was gonna say damn you've got it narrowed down pretty good there! Brent's young whipper-snapper voice on this version sure did get some road gravel in it over the years, didn't it?
