30 Days of Dead

Who needs a miracle everyday? We sure do and we bet you could use one too!

Consider this our gift to you for being so darn loyal... Each day in November we will be giving away a high-quality 320Kbps MP3 download. That's 30 days of unreleased Grateful Dead tracks from the vault, selected by Dead archivist and producer David Lemieux! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Collectible Playing Cards.

Most of you know the drill by now, but for those, that don't, here's the deal:

You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand all November long and win a prize while you're at it.

Hint: A Garcia-Hunter song from 1979

After I looked a D-Rae's hint I found it in 5 minutes. His hint points you in the right direction

I must keep just missing this one even with D-rae's hint. Heard a lot of great versions though. Still early, maybe more hints will pop up later.

Good one

Nice hint actually. User error still led to me missing the show constantly though, duh!

Always a favorite. A nice late first set burner . Thanks Rhino for the month of songs.

This space is getting hot

What a simmering pot of goodness this dish is! Happy Thanksgiving to all of you Heads today. And happy hunting. I'm thankful for D-Rae dropping that little hint. Had the right year, but there are like a million versions of Althea so that really helped narrow down what would have been an exhausting and time-consuming search. I'm also thankful for 30DoD for making Novembers so much enjoyable now, and of course for the Grateful Dead for changing my life!

Jerry bruddah, we miss you.

A great, unique Althea

Scanning though the years, I knew my search was getting hot when the Althea versions started out with more electric swagger. Also, this seemed to be a rather stripped down version, and now I partially know why, but I wonder why the keyboard comes in so late.

This is the first year I've known about the 30 Days, but it's been a blast and I hate to see it end!

Indeed, we are most grateful

I love how at the very end of the clip you can hear a guy call out, "Thank You, Jerry!" Indeed, we are most grateful.

Althea is my favorite Dead song, apart from the obvious big hitters like China Rider and Scarlet Fire. The lyrics are so quintessentially Hunter. The riff is so quintessentially Garcia. The musical structure allows the other guys to stretch and wander and do that thing only the Dead could do: plant a tune in your mind that no one individual is actually playing. I adore this song.

A sweet version rather than a barn burner

After a string of shorter tunes, for the early hours of Thanksgiving I was hoping for something a little bigger and definitely easier, but the search reminded me how many absolutely smoking Althea's there were. It didn't always go all the way, but this tune had a very high hit to miss ratio, and when it hit Jerry just went to town. This one isn't one of those, but it's real sweet. I'll have to hear it in context. Thanks Dave et al. and have a great Thanksgiving!!

would have guessed this one

would have guessed this one was played more times than it was. late start in the order of things i guess. anyone know the tune played the most times out of all of them? without looking it up? my guess was sugar mags. pretty high number. i'm sure there are a bunch who know the answer to this round of 30 days trivia. winner gets 20 dollars in bar bucks.

Song played most times

I'm pretty sure it's "My and My Uncle", if you don't count "Drums" ;)

Without checking setlists I was going to guess "I Know You Rider" but I defer to you other more learned gentlemen who I'm sure know better!

I think The Other One is up there. Could be Sugar Mags though, except that The Other One was in rotation a few years before it and played every year.

Sugar Mag

I haven't looked, but I'll bet you're right about the Sugar Mag. Just nailed the Althea. Could have lasted all night, but I lucked out.

Kinda wish I had read your comment before starting my search. Would have saved me quite some time. Synched up nice.

found it

synchs up nice, no prob. unlike for bob, who seems to have a total bust and bails. ends up being a great jam regardless. rest of the show is pretty smokin.
