30 Days of Dead

Who needs a miracle everyday? We sure do and we bet you could use one too!

Consider this our gift to you for being so darn loyal... Each day in November we will be giving away a high-quality 320Kbps MP3 download. That's 30 days of unreleased Grateful Dead tracks from the vault, selected by Dead archivist and producer David Lemieux! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you the chance to win Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary Collectible Playing Cards.

Most of you know the drill by now, but for those, that don't, here's the deal:

You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand all November long and win a prize while you're at it.

Great stuff this month. But I have to be honest. Aren't there better Jerry songs out there. Another song I wont download this month.

Best version of LRR?

This is my favorite electric version of Lazy River Road. I remember trying to search for a version where Jerry sings it without any vocal miscues and, although the "old dawg" did have one slight mistake in this version, this was the best one I could find not including the So Many Roads version which was from a rehearsal, not a true live performance. I like the faster tempo on this version and luckily Bob is not squawking like a chicken throughout. Also, Jerry is playing through an acoustic simulator effect which seems to fit nicely. Actually, the acoustic version with Vince on a real grand piano from the 9/24/94 Phil and Friends benefit show at BCT is pretty cool too, but that's not an official Grateful Dead performance either, but it is worth checking out. I was lucky enough to see the first two versions of LRR in Oakland at the first shows of 1993 and many more after is a really nice song, probably underrated by most. If anyone knows of a better live version sung cleanly without any flubs please let us know...'til then, this is my favorite.

Wish November had 31 days too

But 31 Days of Dead doesn't have the same ring to it, now does it? Loved the long search today and totally lucked out with the result but I'm pretty sure I landed on it. Earlier hints (if that's what they were) were no help; it's not the 6th song of the show, fwiw.

I think

you might have misread the 6th song comment. And one hint below at least rules out a lot of shows.

Unbroken Chain soundcheck

While searching for today's song I stumbled upon the soundcheck for St. Patrick's Day (Philly) '95 on Archive. It's interesting to hear the banter between band members as they work out the chord progressions and tempo for the unveiling of the first Unbroken Chain. I remember being at a previous Spectrum show where fans made a long "unbroken chain" of glow stick necklaces and sent it around the arena and rested it up front in front of Phil. In the soundcheck Phil says he wants to debut the song in Philadelphia. Perhaps that's the reason why. Or maybe it's simply because his name is in PHILadelphia.

Thank you and all those involved for putting 30 Days of Dead together. It's sad to see it end each November. It's like being on a vacation and knowing it can't last forever.

LOVE this song...

....a favorite post 70's song of mine. It fits Jerry's voice like a glove!! I don't know if "young Jerry" could pull this one off so well. His voice in later years just dug deep into my an angel dancing on a pin. Thanks Dave & Co. for another 30 Days....I'm already looking forward to next year!
This is one of my FAVORITE 1st sets post Brent. Happy Holidays fellow freaks!!!

yes, I can count

Thanks for the giveaway clue. This is the 6th song this month from a show I was at. Taped this on DAT and cassette deck. I remember it being a pretty darn good show. Gonna have dig up those tapes.

We got a Pig song, Brent songs, Phil songs, we even got a Donna song. There was an obscure song from back in the day and you don't have to ask. Maybe a Vince song tomorrow. I vote Samba In the Rain... or an epic Scarlet/ Fire. What ever works.

But more importantly, we need 20 more days of this to bring us up to an even 50. Amiright?

Does This Qualify As An Official Release?

I love the guitar lead on this version. Jerry is firing on all pistons, with a more bluegrass feel to this one than most. I remember we offered to take a cousin who went to Loyola U. to see his first Dead show here, but he didn't want to miss out on some special feast or something. Anyway, he's turned into something of a deadhead since then and has always regretted it. You know, other than the So Many Roads box, I don't think there's ever been another official release of this song. Thanks Dave & Co!.

yeah geododge

nice one buddy!
say what people will about 90's dead, this tune, days between, and that would be something, laid out by a seasoned Jerry when he was on, could melt the polar ice caps. kind of like a 70's stella blue or peggy-o.
stumbled around for a while to get this one. just had to pick a spot, went up 18 shows, then decided to reverse, down 15, there it was. so ended up trying about half. stumbling in the dark, should have brought some candles. oh well, with only one day to go i'm in no hurry anyway. been a fairly easy year this time around, no EAC jam archaeological digs. was hoping for maybe something obscure, a little Ken Nordine maybe, and actually hit upon one in my digging around tonight. but i digress. bring on the other one!! shakedown maybe? or bertha? who'se calling what? it's a drummer's choice.

Thanks! Been doing this since beginning, though not seriously till 2012. 2012-2014 I was overseas working during 30 Days, where song came out at 9am, and had plenty of time for "the search". Your clue today saved me lots of time.........

Way down

Yeah I had to slog thru a bunch myself. Love some of the slower versions. Agreed there this year was breezier. No having to take stabs in the dark to guess versions that didn't exist on line. But always a good time. Something awesome to take us out! Unless we get a monster Dark Star/St. Stephen/Cryptical/Morning Dew or something similar, this year will fit nicely on 4 discs.

Been A Great 30!

This has definitely been a good year. I got all of the tunes that I put in an answer for. Still never been picked for the prize. Oh well. I still dig the hunt!

What's the closer?? ...Attics?

OK, gonna give this one a shot now. Wish me luck!

Listen closely

latching onto a little lyrical misstep helped me find this one.

And I have to admit, it's a pretty good Vince show (did I say that?!). He's a value-added player this night. Surprised at how I'm enjoying it so far.

So only one more, eek...what's it gonna be? I'll call a We Bid You Goodnight.

There's something even more obvious at the beginning which is a dead giveaway (pun intended). Didn't notice a vocal slip.

pretty good show agreed

always thought Vince was an interesting choice as an addition/replacement. even if he and the tubes were a bunch of crazy freaks, so i guess there was that. anyway changed my mind, calling Loose lucy for final call- thank you for a real good time.
