30 Days of Dead

If you've been part of the Dead.net community for the past few years, then you know we're on a mission to make a miracle every day in the month of November. This year is no different.

As a token of our appreciation for making 2017 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps MP3 download every day this month. That's 30 days of unreleased Grateful Dead tracks from the vault, selected by Dead archivist and producer David Lemieux! Intrigued? We're also going to put your knowledge to the test and give you a chance daily to win a limited-edition 7" single, the 1st release from our 2017 series.

Here's how it works:

You know your Ables from your Bakers from your C's, but can your finely tuned ears differentiate the cosmic "comeback" tour from a spacey 70's show? Each day we'll post a free download from one of the Dead's coveted shows. Will it be from that magical night at Madison Square Garden in '93 or from way back when they were just starting to warm it up at Winterland? Is that Pigpen's harmonica we hear? Brent on keys? Step right up and try your hand all November long.

Guess the venue and date correctly and you'll be automatically entered to win the prize of the day. Each day a winner will be selected at random, so take your time and make your best guess! Answer correctly, and you will also be automatically entered for our Grand Prize - a copy of our SOLD OUT MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT boxed set.

Get started here.

Today's Song

"Seastones">"Playing In The Band"
Hint: A huge jam featuring a special part of the show, only played for a few months before the Dead's hiatus.

Is this really Seastones?

Or is it more accurately Phil and Ned? Because Seastones is a specific piece I think. Or most accurately, Phil and Ned and Jerry and Bill.

But I can't stop for nothing, I'm just playing 30 Days of Dead

Got no sin upon his hand
Let him cast a stone at me
For playing 30 Days of Dead!!
Loving it! Thanks again!

Club d' Jour

Way down in the south of France all the ladies love to dance
kick their heels up in the air snap their fingers for romance

While the gentlemen compare blonde or black or auburn hair
check the motion and the style Oh, you know they take their while

Hey, to make the motion more complete, yeah, to make it more a treat
Club D'Jour is where to go come on down and see the show

When the rhythm's really right you can burn it down tonight
when the singing's really fine sweet as Spanish sherry wine

When the club can't contain the beat it just rolls out in the street
spills on down the avenue bringing dancers to their feet.

When it's good as it can be it gets better wait and see
oh, these folks don't ever sleep till they're passed out in the street

Way down in the south of France all the ladies love to dance
clap their hands and walk on air, yeah, the feeling's really there
won't you take a little taste raise it to your charming face?

When the rhythm's really right you can burn it down tonight
when the singing's really fine sweet as Spanish sherry wine

Go on take a chance, the ladies do love to dance.

no Seastones left behind

Ditched Seastones for Dave's #2 was a shame, there are some terrific shows made better by Seastones, 10-16-74 being I think a great example. Go weird, go spacy.

If you are looking for why...

Lurking throughout the catalogue are moments of unchanneled beauty when the thin veil draped between us and frightening transcendence is pulled back ever so slightly allowing something wordless to peer through. The hair-raising movement from Seastones to Playin’ in this show reminds me to listen everywhere for the still, small voice.

Memories are the key not to the past, but to the future......

Hey rockers!!!

Day off, up too early, too much coffee, from one year ago today:

This is just a test, it’s all just a test…………….

Fellow rockers, we’re totally spoiled by Official Releases, 30 Days Of Dead, and Charlie Miller. Such great sonic quality! But who that hears among us can listen past the sound quality into the true depths of the music? How good are you, really, at listening to the Grateful Dead?

My friends, I submit to you the following:
https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?and[]=date:1971-11-17%2A

See also:

A fine and very interesting show, marred by poor sound quality of the recording itself. Grateful Dead urban legend holds that it was recorded using a hand-held microphone placed in front of a home speaker during the broadcast. I asked DL a while back if it was in the vault, and never heard back. Did anybody in the Albuquerque area make a proper line recording? What about the radio station itself----didn’t they make a copy? Did alien renegades from Area 51 hijack it on their way back to Alpha Centauri? Who can shed light on this cosmic phenomenon?

Anybody out there who would accept the challenge, and needs their own copy----purely for testing purposes----you know where to find me. On one of the outer rings of Saturn………………….

Just keepin’ it galactic,

Doc
The Universe, so far as we can observe it, is a wonderful and immense engine; its extent, its order, its beauty, its cruelty, makes it alike impressive…………..

Memories...

I don't know for sure if you were asking, but here's a soundboard of that show:

Edit: Well THAT, my friends, is what you get when you make posts early in the morning without doing any research. Apparently, the Archive.org version is the same recording already posted. Apologies all around, but I'll leave the link in case anyone wants to listen on Archive.

Yeah,

that's the same recording. His URL just points one level up on the Archive. It's the only recording of the show that's there.

Edit: that's what happens when you're writing a reply to a post that the poster is editing while you're commenting :)

Thanks, Doc!

I've got that one (same pristine recording!) - I'll cue it up for tonight. If it's good enough for your space flight, it's good enought for mine. Rock On!

Seastones makes

it's first 30 Days of Dead appearance! Thanks, Phil & Ned & Dave & Co.!!! (evnen though we're missing a very large chunk of Seastones, here).

You know we're going to have to pay for the easy ones like this with a Me & My Uncle with no clues whatsoever, right?

So easy, I think we're toast for the rest of the month.....

We've been getting a lot of easy ones..... maybe Dave's on vacation. I expect this to become considerably more difficult!

Ha ha yeah, that song had 616

Ha ha yeah, 'Me and My Uncle' had 616 live performances, most of any! However it's by John Phillips, so copyrighted elsewhere. According to the Wiki article on the song, apparently Phillips composed it in a tequila stupor one night in 1963. Judy Collins captured it on tape and later recorded it. Phillips claims he woke the next day with no memory of it! but later recorded it himself. Even Joni Mitchell has a version, which I'd love to find since I've never heard it!

With this 17th offering, we've now been gifted 3 hours and 40 minutes of live Dead. Who else is doing this? No one. Who else could do this? Don't know. And for eight years running. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

Try syncing up the Seastones part with the Archive version of this show and get that slight reverb effect...whoa. Ned blew many minds, no doubt. Fun stuff. Thanks Dave!

The band Sunn(0))) has become famous in the past decade by setting 'new' standards for performance and sonic invention... little do most people know the Dead were blowing minds in the 60s/70s and met up with a like soul that brought the idea of sonic sculpture onstage (and later on record)...
