Grateful Dead

Rare Bertha Video from September 16th, 1978

30 years ago the Grateful Dead arrived in Egypt and created one of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s most monumental achievements by playing 3 unforgettable shows at the Sound & Light Theater near Cairo. To celebrate the enduring legacy of this musical milestone, we’re streaming video of the first song, "Bertha" from that final night, September 16th, 1978.

This excerpt is plucked from the DVD inside ROCKING THE CRADLE: EGYPT 1978. You'll find 100 minutes of footage on the DVD -- including 13 songs from the night of the 16th. Another DVD highlight is “The Vacation Tapes,” a featurette of never-before-seen candid band footage from the trip.

Egypt, thanks for flashback

Wow, looking at that sample video is a flashback if there ever was one. Yep it was 30 yrs ago. I was there in Giza, 25 yrs young. Definately the high time of my life. A huge influence on my life right up to this day. So many stories to tell, I`d have to find lots of time. I didn`t take pictures of the show, somewhat incapable of handling a camera during those hours. I did take lots of pictures, around a couple hundred, of the pryamids, deadheads dancing on top at sunrise, lots of pics around Giza and Cairo, and around the grand hotel and grounds. Most of the past thirty years the pics have just been sitting around in boxes, sometimes lost, sometimes found. Shared them with my friends but always wanted to share them with dnc community. Up until recently I didn`t know how to scan or upload. Real cool, this new dead.net site seems like I can figure out the upload easy enough, now to dig the pictures out and scan them. Maybe if I post some pics some long lost friends might recognize them and we can get in touch. If you were there I`d sure be happy to hear from you.

And thanks to all involved for commemorating this historical event so rightiously

Put me down for...

... the Sunrise too, I think it's lovely. Not thrilled with the Dancin' on that album though...But that version of Terrapin with the orchestra is completely totally groovy!

I don't feel the move...

...to buy this rhino product. I will go with the new Road Trips though. We need more of the hot sets left in the vault, not the novelties (e.g. Egypt) and not just the multi-tracked stuff, please, before WE die. Some of us are getting up there in years, no joke.
