Rare Bertha Video from September 16th, 1978
30 years ago the Grateful Dead arrived in Egypt and created one of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s most monumental achievements by playing 3 unforgettable shows at the Sound & Light Theater near Cairo. To celebrate the enduring legacy of this musical milestone, we’re streaming video of the first song, "Bertha" from that final night, September 16th, 1978.
This excerpt is plucked from the DVD inside ROCKING THE CRADLE: EGYPT 1978. You'll find 100 minutes of footage on the DVD -- including 13 songs from the night of the 16th. Another DVD highlight is “The Vacation Tapes,” a featurette of never-before-seen candid band footage from the trip.
right on gypsy cowgirl & jiggity 400; anybody that's trying to be a critic they oughta research what St. Dilbert has to say about them JAH LOVE ps the 30th is comin'
To each his/her own. Hard to classify these shows as they were unlike any show by any band ever. Are you kidding me? Playing in the shadow of the great pyramid? Aye carumba. My understanding of these shows is that the slow pace of the tune was the result of a tasty mix of local delights. But seriously, how do you rate a show based on anything normal when you think about how fantastic this run must have been. Heck, I've heard a hundred better Berthas, but they weren't played at the feet of the sphinx.
So, While it is always a treat to see the great gar and friends I will pass on the CD's. I still haven't listened to all my 77's anyway.
Have a great evening!
hey aoxoa, where can i download fire up. back in the day, my moms
smashed it after finding the album with goodies. one of my faves.
i live on a lonley avenue.
sorry aoxoa, hey naked mark, where can i down load fire up!!!
it is not my favourite song by any means, but really chilled me to the bone.......
freebird420 says it's like nugget before nugget was main stream!!!!
Woke up this am & what a great way to start the day, great Bertha video.....as for the anti-Donna comment, don't get it. I have always hated to hear or read all this crap about her.
I think there were always a large group of Dead Heads that have hated her from the start because she invaded what was always an all boys club.
In this video u can see she is aware of an issue and is trying to get someones attn to address it, which she did at alot of shows.
Like i have mentioned here before by 1976 thru 78 she was on the top of her game & added so much to the band, not just her voice but her beauty....so many 77 shows she is like a bird
and when she & Keith left to me the Dead were never the same...for a long time I just could not listen to music never stopped, looks like rain and so many others at a show with her voice not there, I am sorry but Brett did not fill her void vocally...hated his voice.
so Fuck off Donna haters, if u r a real Dead Head ....and I don't mean in the dark Dead Head...you would love Donna
I am a fan of the band, all years, all forms. While I see qualities in all variations, I have my personal critiques as well. Foul language does not need to be used to get your point across.
I remember when One From the Vault first came out, man, I knew we were all in for something good. Keep them coming!!!
As for the Bertha video, I wish those fingers were still playing, slow or fast who really cares!
Miss you Jerry.
It did sound a bit slow to me but I wasnt sure if it was the way the guys played it or the quality of the video.
I did enjoy seeing Donna up there. There was some finer points when she was in the band and her singing fits in nicely with the song.
I liked Jerrys afropuffs as they were called on the first page. They look like pigtails to me. My favorite part was seeing Bobby jump up when he hits that last note. I wished I couldve seen him do that when I caught him playing here this summer.
