    August 20 - August 26, 2007

As we move toward the symbolic end of summer (Labour Day, of course), we have some great music to play spanning about 21 years of Grateful Dead music, from 1968 to 1989, two fine years with which to bookend this week’s offerings.

Our first entry this week is the encore from 8/21/68 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, a nice, juicy Midnight Hour. Although not quite as prevalent at shows in 1968 as it had been in 1966, the Grateful Dead continued to play monster versions of this Pigpen vehicle.

Next we’ll stop into 1972, to the opening night of the rightfully famous Europe 72 tour, to 4/7/72 in London. From the middle of that night’s first set is a typically hot 1972 rendition of China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider.

In 1976, at the end of their very successful summer of comeback shows, the Grateful Dead entered the studio and recorded a couple of the songs they’d been playing that summer. From one of those sessions on 8/29/76 is this bare-bones Dancing In The Street with only Donna on vocals. While we’re in mid-1970s mode, we also have this terrific Samson and Delilah from 5/12/77 in Chicago. Despite the frequency that song was played in 1976-1977, they never seem to get tired of it, always offering up an inspired rendition.

Finally from the 1970s, on 4/22/78 in Nashville to be precise, we are pleased to bring you a couple of tracks from the second set, starting with the second set opening Lazy Lightning>Supplication and the pre-Drums Estimated Prophet>Eyes of the World, both very nicely performed songs on this night.

Our last stop this week is in New Jersey on 7/10/89, a show that took place in and out of a massive thunderstorm. By request, we have the first set closer, The Music Never Stopped, and from the start of the second set, a great 1989 combination of Foolish Heart, Just a Little Light, Playing In The Band>Uncle John’s Band. What a great tour.

Be sure to check in next week, as we’ll be exploring some intriguing material from 1969 and 1980, and other material between those years, and likely after. We try to surprise even ourselves. Feel free to write with questions or comments.

Please note that beginning today all Taper’s Section audio streams are served via a new media player in both Windows Media Audio and QuickTime Audio formats.

    OHHHH!
The Russian Judges are giving this performance a VERY low score. 3.4 3.5 2.1 and 3.1! It looks like a great routine has been marred by a technicality, I'm sure they're not taking this well back Stateside!Back to you, Brian. See ya Monday, Bobstopper

Would spend my monday mornings downloading the week's tunes to listen to. Can't stream at work, really miss this. By the way, I have purchased all the Dicks picks, and each of hte live releases, and have continued to do so. Would pay to download, either a subscription or each week, if that is what Rhino wants. Just bring them back, please

Googled a bit, got bored but found the album cover 'Alright Still' - the design reminds me a bit of Shakedown Street, my new avatar refers.... Yeh, get a life but with only 2 deadhead points out of the above suggested 10, where to turn. Listening to Robert Hunter :-)

no, no, i think i DO get it. i was just being facetious in that earlier post. just a little but of good-natured poking in the ribs, but perhaps that didn't come across so well. one loses a lot of context in typing. humor might not show through so well. or my attempt at humor. i really didn't mean it as an attack, just to question who really is and is not a deadhead, and whether or not the term is a good one at all. am i a deadhead? to some, yes, to others, no. i don't really know what the definition is or isn't. just pointing out some stereotypes which i find utterly ludicrous. 'heads come from ALL walks of life. and, by the way, i have no particular distaste for christianity, just a distrust of all religions, but i won't knock any of them. i agree with your last post, actually. i, too, am upset by the posts vilifying mr. gans. i may have written one of them actually before relaxing a bit and realizing that none of us actually know why the downloads were taken away. (i apologized to him in this section.) maybe it was a decision that wasn't thought through well enough. maybe it has to do with copyright law. maybe it has to do with some other legal issue. maybe we were never supposed to be able to download the music in the first place. at this point, i don't really care what the reason is. i would just like an explanation so that the mystery could be cleared up once and for all. what i do no is that these 51 pages of postings make for very, very interesting reading. and i've read them all. the ebb and flow of emotion. fascinating. instead of getting angry, maybe we should all just take a break from this site and put on one of our favorite shows or albums until we can gain some fresh perspective (or are given fresh perspective.) what i do find intriguing is the new vitriol that has popped up in recent hours. are people just realizing that the downloads are gone? perhaps they need to go back to page one and read every post to find out that it is old news. i do hope david lemieux is fine. i believe he is. i don't think that he's the one pushing the buttons on the website, so i wasn't concerned about him when the tapers section wasn't immediately available on monday. just figured it was a glitch of some sort. but i'm glad that you noticed, too, crowley. i think we are the only ones who mentioned the lateness of the postings on monday. (see one of my earlier comments.) i wish david L would post something like mr. gans, but he's probably watching out for his own ass. he has what i consider to be the single most important job in the entire GD organization. i highly doubt that he'll come out and bite the hand that feeds him. but i do wish he would check in and say hi. i wish i still had his personal e-mail address. i sent him something once, and he replied within hours. i'd write to him now if i could. oh, and i can't stand lilly allen. sorry, just not my cup of tea. but i do hear that the cowboy junkies' latest lp (can i still call them lp's?) is quite good.

Just adding my to (two) sense (cents). I saw a bumper sticker on the way home tonight "there is no way to peace: peace is the way". Tips to check on: check out red rocks '78 especially 7-8 drumz>wharf rat. I listened to the opener and first few songs from cincinnati 12-73. Thanks to the post from the other user who mentioned it. Jbg is a nice way to start, just EXACTLY perfect the way they start it talking with jerry chomping at the bit to go.. Plus, the sugaree has that little extra 'sumpm. enjoying the ride,

I still appreciate the great music that is made available to us all. It may be disappointing to loose the Monday gifts, but we all have to learn to live with it. We still are reminded of the golden days of old with the new format, it is just missing the convenience. I am still grateful to David L for his work, and wish him good luck with continuing it.peace, Jeremy

New from Rhino records, "The Real Deadheads!" All their greatest hits are here! Including: "Leave (insert name) alone man! She/He's done so much for the music!" And who can forget: "These jagoffs are the one's who ruined it in '95 man!" And, of course, everyone's favorite: "I'm more of a Deadhead than you!" Now you can get all of this, plus their brand new dance hit (w/ Lilly Allen on vocals): "Where did I place that fucking fuck?" Rolling Stone gives it 3 stars stating, "real deadheads will love The Real Deadheads, but those who only enjoy the music may be a bit disappointed." Anyway! sixstringsmoreorlesh: Uh, I'm sure you've been able to somehow deconstruct Plato's parable of the cave to fit with your thoughts on modern business practice. Very post modern. It's also strangely ironic in that Plato was really alluding to those who are deprived of philosophy. In essence, they are all prisoners in a cave. They believe that the shadows between themselves and the wall is reality. The parable of the cave is really concerned with philosophy (as interpretated by Plato) and his idea of "the good." Not so much about Keynesian economics. Perhaps you were thinking of the parable of the snake. It certainly seems more precient to the discussion than Plato's theory of ideas: A dying snake asks a man for help. The man balks, thinking the snake will bite him. The snake assures the man that he will not. The man nurses the snake back to health, and then the snake promptly bites the man, because, well, it's a snake, and that's it's nature. The dying man's last words? Fuck.

>Please note that beginning today all Taper’s Section audio streams are served via a new media player in both Windows Media Audio and QuickTime Audio formats. Sad Sad news. Why not rename the old Tapers Section as the Custies' section? Cause it sure looks like that's what ya really think of us! (I mean Rhino-Time-Warner-AOL, not David L, since I don't believe that this move would have been David's choice) I hope to hear that this policy changes, elsewise I will have little reason to keep visiting this site. If nothing else this is a reminder to us all about the music that is the soundtrack of our live's!! Well at least mine for sure! Monday after next will be the 30th anniversary of my first Dead show. Wich i attended w/ member's of my family and freinds both alive and gone.Oh what a time that was! Every time i would see a recording from 77 or 78 in the taper's section i would download it right away, because afterall that was My Grateful Dead!! Over the years i have fallen in and out of the scene but the one thing that has always remained the same was the music! In retrospect my initial outrage over the MP3 stoppage might have been a knee jerk reaction to revisiting my youth thru the newly revamped Dead.net! I still hope for an explanation[no matter what it is] because this music has been there for me for 30 + years now! Through good time's and bad! As a veteran of over 100 show's thru the 70's ,80s,90s, and beyond!! [Ijust got tix for Ratdog @ Northfork in Westbury And Phil @ the Nokia ]we as a collective whole should not complain about anything as trivial as this .Because when those theatre light's go down I alway's feel like i am home! This is where i belong !! And i think for a lot of us this is so! So wether or not the Mp3's comeback or not i will keep on truckin home or @starbuck's or where ever the music takes me!! Thanx to the David's both L and G for adding to the soundtrack that alway's bring's me home!! Rogue

Dudes and ladies, I need to inform you that I am the last and only real Deadhead. I only shower once a year and that is in patchouli. I haven’t cut or combed my hair since Jerry went to Cloud 9. I eat only locally grown organic food from the Farmers Market that I buy with my food stamps, otherwise I dumpster dive or graze on wild plants and mushrooms. Of course I don’t wear underwear and when I do need to wash my clothes I just jump into the nearest available body of water. Don’t believe in shoes, when winter comes I just make a foot covering from roadkill. I went to a total of 420 shows. I only listen to live audience tapes mixed with soundboards, CDs are for yuppies. Be kind all of you are sellouts. I need a miracle of free tickets for all Ratdog and Phil shows. Can you give me a ride too? If you are not kind and give me free stuff I will call you all sorts of names you posers. Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) I never took the time to post, only enjoy the shows on my stereo and local venues. I have been a long time supporter of the band, however, my love is slowly being tainted. I guess the lesson to teach my children is about capitalism not love and sharing. We used to enjoy dancing and singing along to the nice vartiety of shows. Now we are sitting and discussing the parrells of capitalism and greed. They used to play for silver and then life, well I guess they are returning to that montra of profit. Does anyone realize the positive effect of music sharing has had on the band in marketing it's movement and bottom line. Thanks for listening~

...let's forget the fiasco of the change to streaming. There is some great stuff in this week's music. The Estimated> Eyes is wonderful and the China> Rider rocks. I'm still getting to know the 89 stuff but that's great as well. Kudos to David L for trying to bring us great music, no matter how. I guess we'll find out the next step (if there is one) tomorrow. I'm curious to see if the issue of streaming audio is addressed at all. As speculated, David L is hardly in a position to speak about this. He is just doing is job as vault master and if his employers instruct him, he will follow their instructions. I always thought the Taper's Section downloads would end after a year. Not much point in re-doing months. I just figured it was the ultimate stop-gap while Rhino worked its shit out. I still think that's what it is intended to be. I suspect Rhino will come up with something decent eventually and David L is hardly going to put his name on rubbish (although note that with 3FTV he pretty much had nothing to do with it). It's just a pity that so many people seem to expect free music. I don't - we've been blessed with access to it in this Taper's Section. However suddenly taking it away (in the form of downloads) was a perplexing and not-all-together wise step, but I'm just trying to enjoy the music that is still available. I'm new to the world of the Grateful Dead so I've got plenty of back catalogue to go through. I actually downloaded every single piece offered so far in the Taper's Section so I've got a lot of that still to listen to. It just seems like a case of Rhino somewhat underestimating the passion of the fans.

tj crowley thnaks for the feed-back....re: plato...my p.o.v. w/ his cave theory was from a economics stand...the idea of a certain group of folk that continue to rule (dominate) the planet. keeping the mass in the cave to prevent the sharing of the profits (benefits...leizure). plato had said (and i'm sure you know this from reading your post) that philosophers should be politician and if not ploiticians should learn to be philosophers. too often (if not all the time) one gets involved in the poliitical sphere and lose sight of who they're representing...permitting greed...ego..pride..power get in the way..it's these members of the planet that keep the working class hero's within the cave w/ small glimpses of what is...and oh! i like that story of the snake but i heard it from a co-dependent (alanon) stance...if you manage to secure a copy if that soon to be released cd can you download (oh no! not that again!) a copy..want to hear what this hoopala about lilly allen is all about...in short again thankyou for your input and shared info...leadbelly?huh?

The fact that I have managed to generate some serious interest in Lily Allen’s embryonic career as a pixie pop princess (and Starbucks stablemate of the GD) is very troubling. The prospect of Deadheads flocking to her shows is truly bizarre and part of me has been tempted to encourage it. But fear not, the US Embassy in London has protected you (and her) from such indignities, by refusing to give her a work permit to perform over there because she has an arrest record for fighting in a bar (yup she’s almost as dangerous as Cat Stevens). This means you won’t get the chance to see her and we won’t be able to get rid of her, a kind of lose-lose situation I’m sure Lily is a lovely lass and her hit record sure is catchy: I only singled her out because she was incongruously advertised alongside the Grateful Dead on the Starbucks website and because I can guarantee you that no-one will be tearing their hair out (or coughing it up) over her performances in 40 years time!

I'll add my $0.02. Much preferred the MP3 for most of the reasons already mentioned - can't stream at work, can't sit all day at the home computer, must share with wife & kids, pc speakers incorported into the moniter don't give the best sound, etc. Prefer to download, burn to cd, and listen in the car during commute, or at work on cd player.Given all that, having this site has been a wonderful addition for as long as it has lasted. I enjoy the "X years ago today" aspect and the chance to be introduced to something new, or be reminded about something heard but forgotten. I started getting into the Dead with the Wake of the Flood LP, (when if first came out and I was in High School, over 30 years ago) and buy most of the new releases, even the Vault box set, even though I already own One and Two, just to get Three, plus the Two bonus disc. Anyway - if it must be streaming, how about a choice to stream the whole weeks selections continuously, so if I need to sit here at the computer, I don't have to keep starting a new track?

...how we were all upset that the flac/shn files of the sbds were pulled from the archive and we were left with only those 'crappy' MP3s, and now that whatever number of months have passed since then, we're all upset that the MP3s have been pulled from dead.net...When the streams are shut down some time in the near future, I can't wait to hear the screaming start! You all do know that it is still possible to download MP3 files of all the SBD shows on the archive, don't you? Oops, probably shouldn't have mentioned that. Maybe they'll go back and fuck with the archive.org site again? I'm still absolutely at a loss as to how ANYONE could possibly have any beef with David Lemieux over this (or anything else for that matter...). Another thought occurred to me, if there was no intention of releasing further GD archival material (and LOTS of it...), why would Mr. Lemieux remain an employee of GDP (and probably an outside contractor for Rhino) and continue to sift through thousands and thousands of hours of tape from thousands of concerts day in and day out? You do realize that he is going through absolutely EVERYTHING. Unlabeled reels of studio material from unknown locations and unknown dates from '68, a show recorded on somebody's farm in the summer of 1969, shows that have never been released (or even dubbed onto cassette) before, shows never even RUMORED before... Why would that Winterland 1973 boxed set have been pulled (even AFTER pre-orders were taken)? I'm tellin' you, a MASSIVE pay-per-download project will be unveiled soon and none of this will matter any more...

All these little bits and pieces of tape and weird and one-off shows and studio sessions are seeing the light of day now because it looks like the majority of the material has been digitized and we're down to the 'dregs' now (as if anything in there could really be considered a 'dreg'). Looking forward to hearing some kind of official statement from GDP/Rhino as to what happens next...

Let's see: an interactive website is designed to build a sense of community where fans share stories, love of music etc. It attracts many folks with free mp3s and gains numerous expressions of thanks every Monday morning. Having successfully built a fan base, the free service is abruptly cancelled with no explanaition. Similar logic is shown by irate phans who want it reinstated thru language that should get them sent to time out. This all sounds like my boss and her boss must be consulting on the side and my coworkers have logged in here unbeknownst to me. Gee where can I find some GD on the web? Given the fact that used GD cds/dvds can be inexpensively obtained from Amazon, why should I exhibit brand loyalty to Rhino? Alas, I would love to ponder this predicament longer and perhaps pontificate a bit but I have to share this computer with my family. Cheers to all the humor here and may the mp3s return but I won't be holding my breath.

This might not be the appropriate place to post this, but I've got a question. I read at this site that the remastered version of FTV2 has extra material - material that's a bonus on one of the remastered CD's. Any good reason to spend the extra cash if I have the original FTV2 disc and the Rhino remasters? Anything different. The completest in me begs for a response. Tomorrow's Monday, btw. Think we'll get any info about the Streamers Section? Just want to give a big hug to David L from cyberspace. We love you, man. Even though you are probably younger than 75% of us. We await your words ...

Hey now,Tomorrow will possibly anser some questions. I am sure that the bulk of the vault is not digitized, at least that's the information according to David L. from an e-mail a few months ago. Sadly, he has not answered any e-mails this week, and for those of you that have e-mailed him- he typically responds very quickly. I hope his role is not being down graded. He's got great ears and knows how to use them. Maybe tomorrow we'll get some really cool stuff to download- if not, oh well. Thanks for everything David, even for the streams. Eric

umm, craigeyler ... why would DL continue to sift through miles of vault tape?! Who of us wouldn't, pro bono even!! Anyway, that said, I agree with the gist of your post... in fact a little birdy told me recently that Rhino actually has a ton of good stuff coming our way through the next couple of years. So I suppose good things will come to those of us who wait, and in the meantime I've got my streaming laptop hooked into my stereo which is hooked into my tape player which makes the tapes that can play on my outdated-ass old taped decked-out Honda...

You can snag all the streams here using WM Recorder to grab the streams as .ASF files. These files play ok on the desktop "as is" anytime you want. If you need them in MP3 for your iPod you can use FOOBAR2000 to convert the ASF files to MP3. If you need it on CD for your car you can use BurnAtOnce. All these WinPC software packages are obtained easily online and are free or inexpensive shareware. Before everyone dumps all over me for the conversion from one lossy format to another lossy format (ASF to MP3), if the name of the game is solely to grab the music for playback later, this approach works fairly well albeit the audio quality is lower than before. If you are listening to it in your car you probably wont notice the difference anyway.

The Russian Judges are giving this performance a VERY low score. 3.4 3.5 2.1 and 3.1! It looks like a great routine has been marred by a technicality, I'm sure they're not taking this well back Stateside!Back to you, Brian. See ya Monday, Bobstopper
