    What should > mean?
This issue comes up now and again. I agree it is often used in a misleading or uninformative way. It should, I think, indicate a musical linkage between songs. This does not require 30 seconds, 30 mins or any particular length, but it does require more than completing one song, and quickly beginning another. Consider, are we really interested in those progressions in a set where they do not pause for Jerry to smoke a fag? No, we are interested in when the Dead musically merge songs together. Sometime there is a grey area, particularly if the transition involves no created melodic material, but is based on a rapid transition due to the matching tempos, rhythms and key signatures of the tunes. But in any case, simply a very short pause, no grounds for using the > for me!

Jack Straw ( NOT >) China Cat
Interesting subject among tapers -- what is a "jam into"? I guess it matters what what period you started going to shows in and what period(s) you like to listen to. To me, this passage does not qualify as a "jam into". It sounds ike a prearranged set list. A real "jam in to" has at least 30 seconds of transition. Some tapers put the arrow in if there is less than a three second interval between songs. I think this really defeats the purposes of the arrow.

Week of November 19 - November 25, 2012

Welcome back. Like last week, this week we have a double dose of 1979, plus some 1989 Grateful Dead here at the Tapers' Section.

First up is the end of the show from 11/29/79 in Cleveland, where we have Black Peter>Around and Around>Good Lovin'; US Blues. It was quite common in 1979 to come out of Space with the Jerry ballad, a bit of a change from the usual rocker coming out of space.

Next up is the pre-Drums sequence from 12/7/79 in Indianapolis, where we have China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider, Eyes Of The World, Lost Sailor>Saint Of Circumstance. This is a bit of a unique sequence in that Eyes follows China>Rider, which is usually followed by a Bobby tune.

Next up is the first part of the second set from 12/10/89 at the LA Forum, featuring Jack Straw>China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider, Man Smart (Woman Smarter). We hope you don't mind two China>Riders this week.

Be sure to stop by next week for more tunes form deep within the vault.

There's a bonus surprise of a hot Johnny B Goode after Around and Around! No Good Lovin', though.

mundane, tired post drums '79 sequence, that had many of us in the parking lot early, run of the mill pre drums sequence from the same year (where there were some good shows for sure), then '89. Good as it gets, well to each their own.

Man, no intelligent life there! I suppose, GD Prof, you would have hit the parking lot early after the Cap Center show because you anticipated a draggy Don't Ease for the encore instead of the Ripple they ultimately played for the last time. I never hit the parking lot early for any show I went to. To each his/her own, I guess...

*** Noteworthy: Bruce Hornsby on all of Jack Straw->China->Rider->Women...The first three on accordion and "Women are" on piano sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with Brent as future successor to that role only 7 months before Brent's passing. A remarkable visual I have always valued to say nothing of how top notch this performance was. A top five show in over a few hundred. Primal!

Noticed we have been getting a lot of 79 shows here lately. Not complaining though. I love the 79 sound. Brent just getting his feet wet. Brand new tunes. Lots of good stuff here. And some of my favorite Black Peters of all time. Keep up the good work David.

WE get it!!! You don't really care for anything post Keith wit an exception here or there. It's cool. It really is. So let others like what they do without your, to quote Blair Jackson, "Deader than thou!" attitude. There are certain eras of the band I don't like but I never call anyone out for liking it. Like you said, to each their own....

It's impossible for me to understand why and how people are so hung up on one era of the Grateful Dead.

Listening for a few before getting some rest. Watched Bobby and Gang on TRI, it was awesome. The whole show was exactly what I needed. I doubted I could ever like the internet this much... well I love it. Here's to hoping there might be a fix for the music part of it. TRI seems to have become a perfect part of the net. My home was decorated in a new joy. Again. Feeling lucky

So awesome you posted this! Next week, you'll have to offer the contrast with the first half of set 2 of 12/30/89 to the end of drums. The next Jack Straw->China Cat->Rider. Monumental in its power. What it lacks in Bruce Hornsby, it makes up for with Airto Moriera!! The Dead jamming like they were Phish on that one, haha. Within the context of the unique characteristics of the Grateful Dead, of course.

As always! : ) My point was not that this era has no good shows (as I said) but that I for one do not think this weeks selections represent high-points of this period of the Dead. Others may disagree, of course. I did see over 100 shows in the post Keith era, so I am hardly someone who ignored this period, and I enjoyed a great many of them. But to say that this period had its lapses and a kind of decline in day to day quality is also, dare I say it, to agree with our learned friend Blair Jackson. Given all this, I for one find it difficult to "hear" how someone can think these tracks are "as good as it gets" from the over 2000 shows that we have documentary evidence of. But I guess, as always, it is ok here to wax poetic about what you like, but somehow wrong to do the opposite. Perhaps we should rename the "Comments" section the "Fawning Thanks for Whatever" section. For many posters here I am tempted to say, in response "Don't worry, I get it, if a recording of the Dead eating lunch were posted you would love it." Happy Thanksgivings to all, listen to whatever Dead turns your crank!

one of the many things i have a memory of being thankful for, is being able to - with a liitle help from my friends - eventually find my vehicular vehicle in the parking lot after the concert (always a feeling of profound relief). wandering around and around.... :))))))))) have a grateful and thankful day, everyone.......... * this '89 selection proves that i need to listen to more late '80's concerts....... really enjoyed it......... thanks
