    June 24 - June 30, 2013

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music from three Spring Tours, in 1977, 1979 and 1984.

Our first selection this week is from the penultimate show of the outstanding Spring Tour of 1977. Many of the shows from this tour have now been released, and this 5/26/77 show from Baltimore is one of the few that has not. From this shiw, we have the end of the first set, featuring Brown Eyed Women, Looks Like Rain, Jack-A-Roe, New Minglewood Blues, Bertha.

Next we have music from the first-ever Grateful Dead show at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, VA, on 5/4/79. From this fine show we have Passenger; I Need A Miracle>Bertha>Good Lovin'. The version of Passenger ends the first set, and Miracle onward is the start of the second set. The end of Good Lovin' cuts on the master cassette. This is Brent Mydland's third show as a member of the Grateful Dead, and you can hear his comfort level growing with every show on this tour.

Lastly this week we have music from 4/29/84 at Nassau Coliseum, featuring the first four songs of the first set, including a couple of heavyweight first set jamming vehicles: Feel Like A Stranger, Friend Of The Devil, CC Rider, Bird Song.

Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes from the vault. As always, we encourage you to write to us at the email address below with questions, comments, suggestions, and anything else you have on your mind.

    CC Rider
I really enjoyed CC Rider I just wanted to say. The official releases by the Dead have had a small output from the 80s, maybe one day they will release more (early-mid eighties). The Warlocks set was from '89, almost nineties Dead-era, I'd like to hear more eighties Dead especially after they went new wave.

Phil's bass comes through nice and strong on the '79 clip. That's for sure...

a long time ago I happened upon a film on TV with old-time rock and rollers playing at a festival. Every so often I would have a brief recall of it, and then move on. I happened upon it again on youtube today. It is the London Rock and Roll Show from August 1972. great performances by Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and more. Such beautiful, organic stuff. It is worth checking out. You will see young hipsters trying to look rockabilly, and even see a few punk roots in the styles. Very worthy of your attention.

As "heavyweight first set jamming vehicles" Well, can you name the 4? I say: FOTD and Birdsong. Both could go to some very interesting, new places each time played. Stranger was also very good but rather formulaic. To end the first set it could jam out and really build to a climax. Still, it doesn't make the grade as a "heavy-duty jamming vehicle". CC Rider was for the Hell's Angels camp (for the most part) and was kind of a dirgy Bob tune. I guess the bikers got it played in the line-up regularly (semi) for so long. DL really shows his colors as a "touchhead" with his continuous use of the terms "first-set" and "2nd set" and "Ballard slot". Pre 87 those terms applied less and less to the beginning. It's the difference between living it before 87 or not. Similarly, for some of us, living it between Godchaux and Mydland. Similarly between Pigpen and Godchaux. All very distinct eras of the Dead that all have their peculiarities that we tend to generalize. Well, how many had the whole view? You would think the vaultmaster, for one, for sure. Beyond that, Jerry, Bob, Phil, and Bill... and possibly a few hard-core tapers like Charlie Miller. This isn't one of those "I'm a bigger deadhead than you" arguments, rather, a comment of annoyance on dated terms that don't always apply in any given year. (Hey Tuna Station, what does your cell phone tag lead to? The dock where your fishing boat comes in?)

you need to proofread your penultimate paragraph. reading too much about Paula Deen, methinks. quite a typo.

Gotta admit that '84 is sweet. But, guys, c'mon, does it even touch the earlier stuff? Definately not. Of course, that's just one man's opinion (180 shows over a 25 year period. First show 5/15/70, Merimack Jr. College gym, St. Louis suburbs. Last show was 25 yrs later in St. Louis, of course. Brought things full circle!).

Anna, um Anna. You don't walk in someone's house with dog shit on your shoes and go in and walk around without causing a stink and a terrible mess. What you've done here, is like having "dog shit" on your breath and breathing it on everybody. Don't type anything, "if you got nothing new to say" you my dear are the "touch head". Is there any fixing you? You and your shitty vibe, insults and bull shit to fill a field. You bring such a coarse edge dead.net. You directly ruin my experience here and that sucks. DL is awesome and if you don't like his presentations, don't come here, it's that simple. DL gives us a tremendous selection and sampling, I, myself could not be more grateful for. Go brush your teeth, you got shit on your breath- AGAIN!
