On the anniversary of my 1st show, May, 15, 1977
Today is the 40th anniversary of this, my first show. Can't disagree with the criticisms of the acoustics of that old barn but it was a magical show for me. I had the unfortunate timing of getting into the Dead just as they were beginning their 1975 hiatus. 5/15/77 was the first show after the hiatus within reach of where I lived in Kansas City. By then I had been a Deadhead for years and I was primed for a live show, but the experience was exponentially richer than I had anticipated. After the show we drove home to KC in my friend Frank's old Ford Galaxy, floating down I-70 about 10 feet off the pavement. And now, thanks to a superlative remastering on the May 1977 Box Set I can relive the music of that fateful, grateful night and catch the occasional, fleeting glimpse of that magic back through the years.

First show of many. I paid $6.50 for a ticket. Would say this is the best show of countless shows seen in the mid-west between 1977-1989. The name of the venue was the Checker Dome, that was the only time it was played.

Out of all the shows I attended, this had to be their finest show that I personally saw. It was funny, I took two other people with me that had never seen the boys play and said it was an awful time. I guess they just didn't get it!!!! nothin left to do but smile smile smile!

A great concert but in a place with awful accoustics. They never played there again but came to the Fox Theatre.

My first show at age 21. Had already seen the Jerry Band in Kansas City. Stinking hot day, I had been at the IMSA auto race in Wentzville, MO that afternoon. Drove to The Arch, not knowing where The Arena was (lordy, I was clueless) had a couple give me correct directions, pulled into the lot, and parked 2 spaces away from my friends from school. Bad echo in the hall, but instead of letting it hurt the sound the Dead seemed to use the echo to their advantage. Other big impression was that the Dead had their fans everywhere they played. My quote was "The Greatful Dead, the home team in every ballpark in the league" After the show, I could still hear both the race cars and the Dead in my head...Drove home to K.C. that night, wonderful memory, great music and vibe.
