    August 5 - August 11, 2013

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll check out some Grateful Dead music from 1969, 1984 and 1988.

Our first selection this week is from 7/5/69 in Chicago, featuring Morning Dew, Dark Star. Unfortunately, there are no reel master tapes from most of the shows in the summer of 1969, but there are thankfully cassettes. They don't sound quite as robust as the reels, but they do sound pretty good.

From Alpine Valley on 7/6/84, the first of two nights at Alpine, we have the end of the show featuring Space>Dear Mr. Fantasy>The Other One>Black Peter>Why Don't We Do It In The Road >Sugar Magnolia, Touch Of Grey. It's a very unique, and high-energy sequence, with a couple of cover tunes that were new to the repertoire, Dear Mr. Fantasy and Do It In The Road. You'll notice a cool little tease of Around and Around as they head into Sugar Magnolia, too.

Lastly this week, from 6/25/88 at Buckeye Lake in Ohio, we have the end of the second set, Space > The Other One > Wharf Rat > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away. This is a very common sequence from 1988, and usually played really well, as it was here.

Be sure to come back here next week for more tunes from the vault.

... Wow! Just found this Section and now completely understand the 1984 Heads. What a show! Here's to a Dave's Pick's, or misc. box set to highlight this GD sound. Thanks to all who contribute on these pages! I will get by...

A diverse and excellent sampling as always, Thank You Kindly. I hope Spacebro's streaming issues are resolved. And the oft requested 84 Pine Knob show is just missed again. Hopefully we'll get to hear it soon.

I'll bet a Chuck tease that didn't pan out but then veered into Sugar Mag was cause for celebration on that night. The Dead just did Around and Around too much. Take a hat off to Chuck Berry always, but unfortunately for many of us 50-somethings, a Chuck cover finale every ~3rd show was a part-of-life drag.

I can listen to them again. I had Google chrome, but not the updated version of Flash 11. Just in time. I attended the Buckeye '88 show and I have never seen the soundboard in circulation. 25 years later, and this is the best version I've ever heard of this! Thanks Dave! I hope you can put the rest of the show up! I also hope that '84 Pine Knob (my first GD show) from the vaults recordings can at least be heard in the Tapers section sometime. I've been waiting to hear those for over 29 years now. Between this weeks '69 Chicago, '84 Alpine and Buckeye '88, this is my favorite Tapers section to date! I have several weeks to catch up on and need to listen to some '84!

The show was great, the venue was awful.

The show was good. The venue was a clusterf**k. The parking lot scene was the biggest I'd ever seen. We arrived early to park and were put right in the middle of one of the main vending spots, buried about 8 cars deep. We were basically forced to pull an all nighter, but it was fun and jam packed.

Never a fan of the original or the cover. Always wondered how the next song on The White Album, I Will, would have sounded if they decided to bust it out. A much better song IMO.
