    September 23 - September 29, 2013

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music exclusively from the second half of the Grateful Dead's performing history.

Our first selection this week is on the excellent summer tour in 1981, with a stop in Oklahoma City on 7/5/81. From the start of the first set, we have Shakedown Street, Promised Land, Candyman, Cassidy, Brown-Eyed Women.

Next up from 8/4/89 at Cal Expo is the start of the second set featuring a very unique sequence of music, Truckin'>Wang Dang Doodle>Crazy Fingers>Cumberland Blues>Eyes Of The World. Truckin' to open a second set was very rare, as was a second set Cumberland, and Wang Dang Doodle was always a nice addition to the set. A cool thing about Wang Dang Doodle is that it could find itself anywhere in the show, usually in the first set's blues slot, but also sometimes in the second set, usually after Drums coming out of Miracle or Truckin', this being a rare pre-Drums version.

And speaking of unique second set sequences, this is one of the most unique, from 8/18/91 at Shoreline: Deal>Samson and Delilah>Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo, Feel Like A Stranger. Aside from Samson, that's a big batch of first set Dead. There were a few way-out there sequences in 1991, including this one and the Pine Knob show in June with the Throwing Stones second set opener.

Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes direct from the vault. As always, we encourage you to write to us at the email address below with questions or comments.

Shakedown started a little rough, but damn what an ending! Lived in Norfolk for 12 years, so Promised Land is always dear to me. Not my favorite version, but it warmed the soul. What an awesome Brown Eyed Women! I'll have to catch the other 2 clips later.

    Candyman was super nice.
I was listening to Shakedown and candyman while getting ready for work this morning and during the middle of Candyman it was excellent, my dog Mr. Charlie was put his head very close to my iPad where the speakers were and he started turning his head and rotating from side to side, as if he was hearing something he liked too. Would love to hear some more Candyman in upcoming releases. Could be my favorite dead tune. Dead set Candyman is excellent as is the 9-28-76 from Dicks Picks 20. The 7-5-81 show is 1 of the shows I had in mind for DP8 consideration, really love the Mexicali Blue from that one. Really like the Candyman Cassidy combo

Sounds like one of those nights where everything starts rightside-up and goes completely upside-down. Think'll give it a whirl after this OKC sequence, where Jerry seems a little bit off at the start of Shakedown but then starts pulling it together.
