    June 23 - June 29, 2014

Welcome back to our weekly listen to some archival Grateful Dead recordings drawn from the Dead's vault. This week we've got music from 1972, 1987 and 1991.

Our first stop this week is music recorded at the last show of the first leg of the Dead's fall tour of 1972, on 10/2/72 in Springfield, MA, where we have the start of the first set featuring Cold Rain and Snow, Mexicali Blues, Tennessee Jed, Beat It On Down The Line, Bird Song. The head of Cold Rain is missing from the master reels. I may be mistaken, and likely am, but I seem to recall that this was our good friend Dennis McNally's first Grateful Dead show.

Next up is music from 6/13/87 in Ventura, CA, just south of Santa Barbara, at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. From this show we have the end of the second set, featuring The Other One>Morning Dew>Sugar Magnolia.

Lastly this week is the start of the second set of the excellent show on 6/22/91 at Soldier Field in Chicago, the Dead's first appearance at Soldier Field, featuring Foolish Heart > Looks Like Rain > Crazy Fingers> Dark Star > Playing In The Band > Terrapin Station> Jam.

Be sure to stop in next week for more music from the vault.

The first show of my last tour. McGuinn opened. Chicago->Bonner Springs->Mile High-> Cal Expo-> Shoreline. My first show 05.12.77(Chicago). 13 years done come and gone. As DoubleT stated "something was gone." But not from the Garcia Warfield(SF CA)shows. They smoked until 1994.

    Morning Dew 6/13/87
Ok, Loser is my favorite Dead song, but Morning Dew is the song that makes me miss it all the most. Sigh

I attended that Soldier Field show and it was indeed a good one. In fact, it was a perfect show. Should be a View From The Vault release. There were a lot of great shows from Summer '91. I would extend the time frame of the Dead's final "power run" through the Halloween run. The three shows I attended at Richfield on 9/4-6/91 were all top notch performances that stand up to great performances from any year. I have a soft spot for '87 Dead and sure would like to see more releases from that year.

One of the best shows of that year. The jam into Terrapin is very sweet. That June 1991 tour was some of the very last bits of the "power run" of summer 89 - summer 91. After Shoreline August 1991 something was gone and not coming back.
