    August 11 - August 17. 2014

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we're going to check out some Grateful Dead music from 1971, 1973 and 1977

Our first selection this week is from the Harding Theatre in San Francisco on 11/6/71, the first night of a two night run at this beautiful venue, where the Dead only played in 1971. From this show, we have That's It For The Other One>Comes A Time. This show was Keith Godchaux's first Bay Area appearance with the Grateful Dead, and in the pre-social media days, it must have been a shock to see the Dead in their hometown without Pigpen, and with a new piano player.

Next up is just a single song from 12/10/73 in Charlotte, Playing In The Band, just because we love a good 1973 Playing In The Band around these parts.

Lastly this week is music from 10/29/77 in DeKalb, IL, featuring the end of the first set: New Minglewood Blues, It Must Have Been The Roses, Let It Grow. This show was part of a short but extremely good tour that ran 10/28 through 11/6/77, and featured great music every night. Very different than the Spring Tour of 1977, but just as good, and at times even more adventurous.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

    Agreed
Someone pitched this '77 show to me hard on headyversion. I recently revisited the second set and it's well worth the hype. Didn't know about it missing from the vault, that's a shame.

    Comes a Time
Love the very early Comes a Time. Apparently only started playing it in mid-late October 71. It sounds a little unfinished and raw - and beautiful. And on the tail of a great Other One. As always, THANK YOU!

So was this clip already on the docket, or is Dave tuned in to the discussions going around this joint? Either way, excellent choices. Bring on some of set II next week, it is great stuff. Thanks Dead.net!P.S. In Black Peter, Jerry breaks out the slide for part of the solo. I also heard him do this on the version from 6-22-73. Thank you to the community for the suggestion. I had pulled out this show to listen to for the Bird Song, which had been being discussed. (in a thread to be named) A fairly rare occurrence, no?

Sent an email to DL awhile ago inquiring about 10/29/77. His response was it's not in the Vault. The beginning of Set Two from Bertha to St. Stephen was a JOTW several months ago. To echo Wilfred's sentiments, hopefully this set finds it's way to the Taper's Section. Where is the music from 10/29/77 coming from? A cassette master- or are portions of this show in the Vault, and maybe some reels are missing. Still hoping this show finds it's way to release someday. Thanks for the great selections.

this one is a keeper, I have an excellent soundboard of this show and also a bootleg Cd that sounds wonderful. Not in the Vault? How could such a great soundboard be all over the torrents and not in the vault? Where did these cuts come from? Play the second set next week, it is the best of 77.

I've been talking up this show in the Dave's Picks page over the past year. I didn't realize it's NOT in the Vault! Wow. So if they don't own the tape, how is it that they can put it up on the internet, yet can't release it??? I guess legally they are allowed to post it but not sell it. SUCH a great show… the First set (apart from the opener and closer) is well played despite a ho-hum setlist, but the 2nd set is a monster.

Hi, from Sweden! I have one question for you oldies out there: The sound of Phils bass on the Harding Theatre clip is just amazing on the recordning. My favourite "Phil-sound". But how did it sound like that live = at the event? Does the recordning reflect the actual live experience? Thanx for any comments!

http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=181.0 Betty Cantor-Jackson made several master recordings during the '70's, including a few from other artists. Check the list I googled to see how many tapes ended up missing from the Vault. Loggins and Messina from 1972? I'd like to hear that 1974 Jefferson Starship! Didn't some of the June 1976 Boston run become a Road Trip release?
