    January 5 - January 11, 2015

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, and we hope you're having a great start to 2015. This week we have music from 1981, 1982 and 1988.

Our first selections this week is from 5/2/81 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, where we'll play the start of the second set featuring Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain ; Estimated Prophet > Terrapin Station. The master cassette cuts in during Estimated Prophet, but the big guitar solo and the closing jam are both there, so it's not so bad.

Next up is music from 12/30/82 in Oakland, with some of the end of the second set featuring Truckin' > Stella Blue> Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad. I say “some of the end…” because the ref tape we're working off here cuts at the end of GDTRFB and is missing the set-closing Johnny B. Goode, but rest assured the master tape in the vault is intact.

Lastly this week is the post-Drums sequence from 12/29/88 in Oakland featuring Space > The Other One > Stella Blue > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away, The Mighty Quinn. The is the tail end of the pre-MIDI era, and it's interesting to hear songs like Space and The Other in the last versions before MIDI would become such an integral part of the band's sound after the Spring Tour of 1989.

Thanks for joining us, and be sure to stop in next week for more music from the Grateful Dead's vault.

    May 2, 1981 -- a strange night
Thanks for making these recordings available! These may not be peak nights, but they definitely have points of interest. I attended 5/2/81, and remember enjoying it. In the parking lot after the show, someone said "Last night was Jerry's night. This was Bob's night." The tapes bear this out. Bob's playing and singing are fiery and provocative, and Jerry struggles--blown lyrics and mostly aimless playing (with brilliant flashes). Jerry gets so lost in Terrapin that the rest of the band essentially falls into a vamp until he can get oriented. Could we have some of 5/1/81, please?

yup thanks. that jerry sure was wacky. Can't seem to remember the first line to any of the verses. then absolutely shreds just about everything - nails the transition to fire, the fire jams, estimated jam and so on.

"The is the tail end of the pre-MIDI era, and it's interesting to hear songs like Space and The Other in the last versions before MIDI would become such an integral part of the band's sound after the Spring Tour of 1989." spot on d.l. perhaps it would be possible to provide more contextual sonority with the drumz intact next time. this set -- as i know you know -- had a good zap of the drum-z-pace zeightgeist that night. a very fluid show. i don't envy your decisions, and i'd have a tough time trying to whittle it down to only a few songs, but a break along the lines of eyes->drumzspace->other one etc. could provide a greater understanding of drumzspace as so much more than a bathroom break or a tape flip. the songs pre-drumz often had really unique musical moments over the years as some left the stage and others followed their muse into uncharted waters before unplugging. and i think book ending drumz space in that fashion would help it gain greater respect for what it was.
