I'll have to go back and find the exact date and place of the show, but it was right after 9/11/01 - within a couple of days I think. DtB took the stage, and even in the recording, the tension is palpable. I can't imagine being there. Jeb and Tara get into a little argument in the middle of the show, and you can almost hear the tears behind everyone's words. They go into Seems To Want To Hurt This Time, and it just gives me chills every time I hear it. Tom Gilbert does the drum lead line from the Call to Arms played during the American Revolution, and probably at every other major fight that had drummers. The line just permeates the whole song and is really powerful. Very moving show!

    A Call To Arms???
In hindsight, after 8 years of George Bush, the emotionalism Americans showed after 9/11 is only very human. But, A Call To Arms? What has that brought us? Bush went to war and we seemed to kick ass in Afghanistan and then left there and went to Iraq and attacked in 2003. About 800,000 dead human beings later the place is still a war zone and a new president says we're ready to declare victory and pull most of the troops out, except the ones that will stay there forever in pemanent US bases. 38,000 new troops will go back to Afghanistan to join 30,000 already there to fight a resurgent Taliban that is ready to topple Pakistan (which, by the way, has nuclear weapons). The rest of the European allies still turn a blind eye toward the US effort in Afghanistan. The hippies were against the war in Vietnam. Remember Country Joe & The Fish? It kills me to see this kind of "Ugly American" sentiment on dead.net. If only America had pursued the 9/11 terrorists as police action instead of prosecuting it as a war we would have easily achieved the same results without turning world opinion against us and turning almost the entire US government into war criminals who legalized the use of torture against human beings. I guess Izzie and a lot of other deadheads don't get it, but some of us never took our eye off the ball. To be fair, Izzie is just recounting highlights of a Donna the Buffalo show and not espousing a political opinion, but the context certainly seems to suggest a lot. AIN'T NO TIME TO HATE BARELY TIME TO WAIT OH-HO AND I WANT TO KNOW ARE YOU KIND?

izzie's post prompted me to dig out that show and put it on. Turns out the emotional discussion of 9/11 takes place a little later in the show and is followed by a powerfully played If You Only Could.
