    "Brokedown Palace"

This was my comment on the "Brokedown Palace" encore, published in UPFRONT magazine many, many years later... "There was a night at Winterland in the mid-1970s when, called back by the hometown crowd for an encore, the Dead unveiled "Brokedown Palace". Instead of the usual shouts and whoops of recognition from the thousands of hard-core Deadheads, there was something akin to a huge, collective sigh. For a moment the opening notes of the song hung over the near-silent crowd as if suspended in time; such perfect moments rarely come along in life, and they're never meant to last."

Listened through the side doors, remember hearing Sugaree, sounded good even out on the street.

This was my second show and the one that got me on the bus! It's a great show, overshadowed by a fantastic performance the following night.
