Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this wee we have music by the Grateful Dead from New York City in 1969, and a double dose of New Jersey Dead in 1976 and 1991.

Our first stop is on 6/20/69 at the Fillmore East in New York, where we get some great transitional Dead, when they were heading toward the sound of 1970 with the country-tinged music that would define much of late 1969 and 1970 Grateful Dead. The Old Old House, Sitting On Top Of The World, King Bee, Dire Wolf, Mama Tried, High Time, Dupree's Diamond Blues. As an added bonus, we hear Weir singing lead on Dire Wolf.

From the comeback tour in June 1976, we have music from the middle night at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ, featuring the end of the first set: Looks Like Rain, Row Jimmy, Cassidy, Mission In The Rain, The Promised Land.

Lastly this week is the start of the second set from 6/16/91 at Giants Stadium, featuring Jack Straw ; Crazy Fingers ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider. The next night is mostly discussed in this run, but the 6/16/91 show also featured some great playing, as did most of this tour.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

We love transitional Dead over here...Little Bobbys emotional singing and Jerrys steel (a pity Jerry gave it up...). It´s trippy country - the best of two worlds! And please compare "What´s become of the baby+Feedback" from Electric Theater on 1969-04-26 with the George Jones´y tunes and know you have a band that knew no borders - limitless creativity. And God bless BEAR. He was the eight member. Concerning sound he was right about almost everything. Hey, how about a giant "Bear´s choice-box"? And bless Davis for bringing this great music!

On the excellent June 20 '69 tape, right before "Dupree's Diamond Blues," Garcia says "w're going to play one on the dozen-wire." Does that mean Garcia is playing an acoustic 12-string guitar? Or Weir, for that matter. I can't recall either Garcia or Weir ever playing 12-string of any sort on stage (or frankly in the studio). Does anyone know?

My mind's ear leads me to Garcia using a 12-string on the studio version of Dupree's, at least on the lead-in. I'll have to do some 'research' later...good catch corrycorry2005!

I walked the Mission (Mission street. S. Van Ness to 7th St SF CA) on my way to work 6 days a week (rain or shine) for 6 long years. And was rocking this song in my head song every day as I "walked along the Mission". I like the high energy R & B Garcia band versions better.
