This particular summer, I had a lot on my plate so was only able to attend this show all year. After the prior years brilliant experience at Alpine Valley in 87, I was unable to attend in 88 and up until the night before Buckeye, was'nt planning on going to any. My buddy and I went to Cedar Point the night before (which was on a Friday) and had a great time there. Around the time the park was closing we both were aware that The Grateful Dead were playing the next night a few hours south so we decided then and there that, despite not having tickets ahead of time (the only time I ever did that) that we would drive down. To our joy, we managed to get a hotel room in Columbus and when we turned on the news, they were reporting that Deadheads were streaming in droves since the night before and turning these farm fields into a city of it's own, fresh from the Alpine Valley shows we missed. Early the next day we headed to the venue and suprisingly got a nice parking spot early when the lots opened not realizing that we would be smack dab in the middle of the biggest Shakedown Street vending bazaar we'd ever seen after a few hours. We knew we were there for the long haul until the next day . Cars were parked 6 deep and nobody was going anywhere once they parked. Equaly suprising was that the box office still had tickets available. Also of note was that it was in the low 100 degree mark. extremely. thank goodness we could just sit in the car and run the air conditioner when needed. After scoring tickets and ingesting some (***) in the early afternoon, we went to the only little restaurant across the street in the middle of nowhere from this farm field and proceeded to order spagetti. All the while waiting for the food to arrive and sitting among tie dye shirts everywhere, the (***) started to kick in and it was a very strange lunch. After eating we hung out at the car for a while and at that point realized that we were right in the middle of the bulk of vendors so we checked that out for a while noticing that there sure were a heck of a lot of people there. A huge change from the previous summers shows. We then heard Hornsby and The Range firing up their set and decided to head right in. To our joy we found a great place between the mixing board and the stage. Perfect view, sound and some really cool and friendly people we hung out with the rest of the show. I don't remember anything from Hornsby's set but remember the Dead were spot on perfect. Everyone was happy and having a great time. Hornsby came out and sat in on accordian for a couple songs adding a nice flavor to the mix. The first set definitely was tremendous. Cassidy>Deal rocked. The between set music I remember was Traffic's "Dear Mr Fantasy" sounding great through the PA. Then came set 2. I remember them opening with Victim and watching the smiles on a lot of the tripping heads faces turn into looks of fear and terror. More than a few people got scared of the music. Myself I was fascinated by this reaction as if the happiness and sunshine daydreams turned into nightmares for a few people. I loved the song and enjoyed the contrast from happy music to dark music. This was like the second or third time it was performed so I can understand that many people were'nt ready for it. Then the brand new Blowaway showed that Brent was, is and always will be the man. Truly inspired. Next up was Foolish Heart. Also a brand new song. To my suprise, a guy by us already knew all the words and sang right along with it. The rest of the set was Good Ol' Grateful Dead and did'nt disappoint. After the show, it took what seemed like hours to get out of the venue back to the car. The NFA claps turned into cattle style mooing and at that point, I realized that the scene had exploded from the previous few years. When we did finally get to the car, we were'nt going anywhere. The vending scene was in full swing all night and we were parked right in the middle of it. All in all, this would be a great show to see released. Most of the summer 88 shows would be great releases. Another underrepresented and underrated year with gems all summer long.

Are you kind? Yes, this was one of the best experiences of my life! As much as I loved Alpine and Deer Creek, Buckeye just had less hassle factor and all lush country greenery vibe. Just the best scene ever for my liking! If I could live forever in one day that would be one that could keep me satisfied!!! I was almost at the front, slightly to the right of center. Is it just my frazelled memory or was there a 30 second sun shower when Box of Rain started? Great idea for a topic of discussion! Peace and Love, Jody

The blistering hot summer '88 tour. Literally and figuratively. This was the most fun by far. Great scene, good vibes, no hassles...as close to nirvana got in 1988. "We just dont let anyone pay the accordian with us." - Weir Who knew at that time how important Bruce would become to the band? Loved the first set. The Deal was a smoker. Remember seeing this Hells Angel dancing his a&& off, one eye looking left, one looking right....classic. Loved the new tunes that opened the second set. And the way they were played. Damn fine Terrapin as I remember. Long Strange Trip Indeed! “The Omnipotent Grateful Dead!”

Tight show, "Franklin's" and "Sugaree" played with aplomb, if a bit light on the jam side, but Jer was into it, as his passionate vocals attest. One of the best versions of "Terrapin" I've heard.

This was my first dead show. I was not even a fan when I went. I was blown away. What a show, and I was turned into a instant fan. I remember how much fun the parking lot was the night before, how friendly the deadheads were, how hot it was, Bruce Hornsby was kick ass, and how much energy there was there. I wish I could get a tape of this show.

I flew up frm FL to see family and catch a few shows. It was my younger brothers birthday. Him and his girl had tickets, I was going to scalp them. The night before my brother got into a fight with his girlfriend (DRUNK) and got put in jail. So my sister and her husband got him out like 6 am and got the tickets from him..................Yeaaaaaaaa FREE TICKETS.We did try calling him all morning (sleeping) to get up ang go to the show. So it was me, my sister and her husband (their 1st show) headed to the show. We got there and missed Bruce. My brother-in-law went to get us a beer leaving me and my sister standing next to the sound booth tower. My sister was all decked up with a short one piece mini skirt. Her hair all done up..........make-up......the whole 9 yards. Then somone taps us on the shoulders and I turn arounf to see Ramrod standing there. "that guy up there wants you to be his guest" looking up, I see Healey with a big smile on his face. I said. " Who. Glen Healey?" Ramrod said yes Glen Healey. My sister said "who's that?" Ramrod had 2 backstage passes which I yanked from his hand and grabed my sister by her arm and said" Come On" We had the best seats in the house!!! Healey was such a gentlemen. A really cool dude!! I did a few drops of luquid and it started kicjing in REAL good during blow away.. It was so cool watching Healey and Candace do their thing Everything was pretty much set with Healey equipment, once in a while he would tweek a knob. Candace stayed moving all the time, Talking in a headset, pushing buttons........doing really cool shit with the lights. Healey offerd us a drink, but all that was in his cooler was water and I think gatorade? My sister asked if he had any beer? Healey got on his head set and talked to someone.......a few minutes later walking threw the croud was Ramrod with a hugh red cooler on his shoulder....Up the steps he came...........ICE COLD BECKS!! Beer never tasted so good. Healey told my sister to press this one button...........She did and you can hear Weir's voice with a slight delay......he pressed some other button and his voice got more delayed......FUCKING REALLY COOL!! Cassidy was song. During intermission we were hanging on the rail talking and watching the croud below...................when, way in a distance the croud started separating. Like a hole with no people moving towards us...............That hole?? Was my brother and his girl really drunk and everybody stayed away from them. Healey looks and says' look at that couple, they are really fucked up" Me and my sister laughed and told Healey about the night before and how we got my brothers tickets. He cracked up. The whole show for me was fucking great!! Bruce came in for FOTD. Terrapin was perfect!! During the other one, Healey had a pedel by his foot that said ECHO on it, and thats what he did............ECHO the other one. During Throwing stones a HUGH blow up earth bounced right by us and then bounced aroung the first couple front rows...."picture a bright blue ball spinning, spinning free" It was so cool......................The sound was the best in the house. And Healey was the best Hostess! I know i thanked you before Glen...........And I just want to thank you again..........THANK YOU!! This was and is the BEST show I have EVER been to. After the show while everyone was leaving he blasted on the PA system.....................Love and marrage, Love and marrage, Go together like a hourse and carrage. This I tell you brother, you can't have one without the other. ANYONE WITH A COPY OF THIS SHOW PLEASE< PLEASE CONTACT ME!!!

Great time. The security was a bit harsh though. They dumped my water jug with anger in their eyes. I remember that during half time, the entire Sgt Pepper's album was played. Great memories. Great tour. I miss you all!

This show (as all the chunks of summer tour I caught were) was a blast. I remember Hornsby with his big 'ol grin and the tractors supporting speakers the most. Good vibes all around at these '88 summer shows. It was hot but the music was hotter.

I was really enjoying Bruce Hornsby, standing about 25 yards from the stage smelling some kind and loving life, when i felt the hand of an Ohio State Police officer on my shoulder. He took me up front between the stage and the wall in front of the stage a frisked me. He didn't find anything, but wanted to know what was in the bag I was smelling, and where "said" bag was located. I had fast reactions, and must have thrown it fast. The officer kept telling me I was going to jail. The deadheads were yelling "Let him go, Let him go!" I finally admitted to the officer that I had some kind, but going to jail could ruin the life of a "dumb college kid" that was probably the same age as his son. He told me he would be watching me, but I should " enjoy the Show". Bruce Hornsby watched the whole thing while he was playing and shook his head at me. The Deadheads cheered when i was released. My buddy had my bag under his foot the whole time and suggested we watch the show furthur away, and enjoy the bag. THE SHOW WAS AWESOME!! And a BIG thank you to the officer that gave me a BIG break that probably changed my life.

If the thunder don't get you, the lightning will!! Took two very old friends, who were not DH, but were interested, instead of completing the tour with my wife. When we got up to the gates, i walked thru the myriad of sheriff's and state patrol officers just as Bruce was finishing up his set....after being frisked and walking about halfway, i turned and realized my buddies were no where to be seen. I walked right up to the stage where i knew jer would be standing and kept that space during the show. Afterwards, it took me nearly 2 hours to find the still locked car, where i reunited with my buddies, who it turned out FREAKED at the police entourage at the gate and did not even come into the show! They stood by the car for hours waiting for the show to end for me to return. To make matters even more interesting, my wife of 18 years, who was to meet me frontstage never showed, and spent the show with a new beau. We separated that day never to reunite. Undeterred, I took the 2 tics on to Pittsburgh the next day and made her ticket a miracle for an unknown DH. Btw, just saw Phil and Friends here in Cols (2008) and my ex and her 'beau' from 88 were dancing in front of me all night long. 20 years later and it's still ALL GOOD I din't bother to introduce myself. heheh

Security was such a drag, after coming from laid back Alpine. The shows were medicore at best. The highlight definately was the accordian by Hornsby on Box. That was sweet.

Ahh what a show...a good time was had by all. In my limited experience at Dead shows, I was always impressed by how cool the people were, everyone just doing his/her thing and getting into the music and vibe.

Went to this place for rock shows in high school and college this was a great place to see the boys. We took out young son-he had a riot. I was bare-foot all day. My wife sprayed the police with her spray-bottle. I thought we were going to jail. 5 shows in 7 days we saw 6 record high temperatures. My favorite Sugaree of all-time.

My young bro and his college buddies came to visit and go to a Dead show. We're ouside and hear this band (Hornsby) start 2 play, thinking it sounds good, little did we know what collaboration was to come from that night. Anyway, we stumble inside and my bros buds are being real secretive, I need to tell them I'll smoke what you have and take what we need, tell my brother to shut it! Anyway, if you were there, do you recall coming out of the "cattle chute" and goat boy was standing on the tree stump flexing? OK, maybe it was just me.........what a glorious night, BH became my 2nd fave!! Damn it was hot that night, We ended it at a White Castle, then parked in my backyard (no, I don't know why?) watching the sunrise! "there really isn't far to go"

CubNext time bring the fence cutters and night vision. This venue was designed by throwing a stage at the bottom of a sandy dustbowl of a hill and surrounding it with 8 foot chain link fence. Where's the lake? Well maybe if we got here sooner we could see it. All of the security, ushers etc split during the pause before the encore. Completely "In the Dark" too Our tapes sounded better than my ears did. Tullys D6 patch'd into Nak 300's.

It was the summer after I graduated High School and I was working at the hotel in Dublin Ohio where Bruce Hornsby and his crew were staying. I made friends with some of the crew and was given backstage passes to the buckeye lake show... I had never been to a Dead concert and had no clue what to expect. I invited one of my best friends Lolly to come with me. When we got to "will call" we had backstage passes all access waiting for us. What an amazing night! We got to hang out on the stage and in the tour buses. Maybe some of you that sent remember my friend and I. We sure did stand out in the crowd! We came in tiny tight mini dresses and sky high heels!! We stood on the stage to the side dancing and jammin to Bruce Hornsby and to the Dead... We were lucky enough to get to go to the concert in Cincinnati ( all access) as well. That one we even got to hang out before the show and eat with the band and crew backstage. What an amazing experience! And all the guys on the crew and in the band were sweet and super nice!! Thanks for the memories!! And a special thanks to Michael Kaye from Virgin Records for one if the best times of my life!!

I was already working a new job in Alabama (the company that made the pyro for KISS and AC/DC), but my wife went with our friend from Cleveland Heights. Sorry I missed it, but this was the beginning of drawing the bowstring tight to finally move to California, propelled by a very energetic Alabama Getaway, in the real sense.
