    Jerry's dexterity went to pieces in '92 but if you haven't heard the second set from that show it's excellent. He was still creative and fearlessly exploring. The "Scarlet > Fire" is excellent from 6-12. The flesh was failing him mainly. When you get to '94-'95 then it's both - mentally/physically not there.

    So sad....
    ....to listen to these late Black Throated Winds, with Jerry struggling to find notes in the right key, and otherwise stumbling both melodically and rhythmically. It is one of those songs where the different between it being great, and being, well, just a bad song, is rather slight. But I guess it is no surprise I am not a fan of '92 Dead!

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we once again feature Grateful Dead music from three eras of the band, with three different keyboard players.

From the tail-end of the Keith and Donna era, with only 10 months left before they’d leave the band, we have the start of the second set from 4/19/78 in Columbus, OH: Samson And Delilah; It Must Have Been The Roses ; Estimated Prophet > He's Gone.

From the end of the show on the middle night of a three night run in Sacramento at Cal Expo Amphitheatre on 6/9/90, with only a month and half left of Brent’s tenure with the Grateful Dead, we have this excellent end-of-show sequence: Space > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hey Jude > All Along The Watchtower > Stella Blue > Turn On Your Lovelight, Black Muddy River.

Lastly this week is the entire first set from 6/12/92 at the Knickerbocker Arena on Albany, NY, about midway through Vince’s time with the Grateful Dead: Jack Straw ; Sugaree ; Mexicali Blues ; Maggie's Farm ; Brown Eyed Women ; Black Throated Wind ; New Speedway Boogie ; The Promised Land.

They did some nice versions of Black Throated Wing in '90 and '91. If I were to recommend one off the top of my head, I would suggest 12/9/90. The whole show is really good actually. I would say epic. I'm glad to see some picks from June '90 lately. This 6/8-10/90 Cal Expo run is particularly nice. 6/23-24/90 Eugene is pretty awesome as well. 6/15-17/90 Shoreline was also great. Not a bad show in the entire month.

"Hey Jude" lies across every second set that it appears in as a horrid blot. It was a source of enormous frustration for me that the Dead, starting in the mid-80s, began to cover the most mundane, trite songs anyone could possibly imagine. HJ was terrible when Pigpen sang it too. Too bad - everything else in that set looks good.

The song itself is complex and interesting, the remedial outro-refrain that the dead did - not so much. Heard it first at Redrocks 85 and it was brief and intense live. Whenever I hear other versions I recoil slightly. But I hear you - they might as well have done "Sweet Home Alabama" instead...same 3 chord progression.
