Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have music from 1969 before jumping ahead to the 1980s with music from 1984 and 1988.

Our first selection is this very cool show from 6/28/69 in Santa Rosa, CA, featuring Slewfoot; Silver Threads And Golden Needles ; Mama Tried; Me And My Uncle ; Doin' That Rag> High Time ; King Bee ; Sittin On Top Of The World,Turn On Your Love Light .

Next is the start of the second set from 6/29/84 at Cuyahuga Falls, OH, featuring Scarlet Begonias > Touch Of Grey ; Dear Mr. Fantasy > Man Smart (Woman Smarter). A couple of cool things to note are the first attempt of Scarlet>Touch (which would later be joined to Fire a couple of times in July 1984), and Dear Mr. Fantasy, which had debuted two weeks earlier at Red Rocks on 6/14/84.

Lastly this week is the first set from 6/25/88 at Buckeye Lake in Ohio, featuring Feel Like A Stranger > Franklin's Tower ; Box Of Rain ; Sugaree ; Stuck In Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again ; West L.A. Fadeaway ; Cassidy ; Deal. This is Bruce Hornsby’s first sit-in with the Grateful Dead.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

It's good to hear a soundboard of this show: I've had an audience recording forever. Bruce Hornsby and the Range opened the day. Jerry acknowledged Bruce later when he came out with his accordion and played along during Sugaree and Memphis Blues. It was so hot out that day, my Heineken would be warm in less than 2 minutes!

I was there. It was indeed hot. The show was excellent. A perfectly executed first set. Hornsby sitting in was such a treat. These early readings of Foolish Heart, Victim and Blow Away were well played. One of the greatest moments was the crowd reaction to Victim in the second set. The mood went from happy and festive to dark. The lysergic influenced tension was an act of genius. As a thematic element, the use of tension and release at this show for song choice and placement and how it affected the crowd was the first and last time I'd see something like that out of my 11 years of going to shows. Even at this later point in their career, at a time where they were more known to play it safe while Garcia recovered from his coma, they could still control the crowd emotionally through auditory means.
