Dead.net Polling Station: Ringin' In The New Year
Last month we asked "If you could time travel back to any era, which would it be?":
The 60s - 1094
The 70s - 1320
The 80s - 235
The 90s - 44
Step right up to the Dead.net Polling Station for this month's poll.
My favorite nye show... 12/31/78 is a close second though.
Should be able to vote for 12/31/90 with Branford... That's an awesome show too!
ultimately for me it's a tie between 12/31/76 and 12/31/78...if I had to choose ONE of those, I'd go with 12/31/76.
luckily, i don 't have to choose just one.
Reading this lead me to listen to the '72 NYE show, which is excellent.
It also begs the question: other than the Closing of Winterland vid, and the '87 vid "Ticket to New Years", there hasn't been official releases of New Year's shows. Why? They were always special shows, and the band always "brought it." David- if you're reading this, please consider releasing some of the great New Year's shows on Dave's Picks. Thank you, and Merry Christmas to all!
You're asking us to choose between chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Why not simply put all NYE shows in play? I agree that 12/31/72 was probably the best, but 71 was no slouch either. With the choices provided, I'll go with 78 for sentimental reasons.
I wasn't aware that 12-31-68 even circulated -- I'd sure love to hear it. I picked Cow Palace, but 12-31-90 was one of the original choices, and I'd have gone with that one for the amazing jams with Branford. Phil is ALL OVER this one!!
I was at this show.......I loved the DARK STAR opening the 3rd set........& Bill Graham buying us breakfast after the show.......GRATE show.......
The choices listed above do not match the choices shown in the GD bulletin I received. Yeah, yeah, I know.... never trust a prankster. HOWEVER, while all the shows listed above are quite excellent and unique, the 2nd set of 12/31/90 with Branford & Bruce & Hamza is some of my favorite jamming EVER.
Being as there are only four choices for a favorite NYE show I had to write in, my Fav is 12/31/1972. I have had an aud and a sb copy of this show for years and it has always been one of my absolute fav shows. For anyone that has never heard this I highly reccomend it.
I will never forget the light show at the Cow Palace. After the balloons came down and Sugar Magnolia was finished, a large screen above the stage lit up with lasers that focused on the screen and beat to the music while traveling out above the crowd and dancing on the ceiling and the banners hanging from the ceiling. So cool.
IMO, the 12/31/1972 far surpasses all of these.
