Sometime late 1983, Carlsbad, CA. Spent 2 years in Japan (1981-83 USMC) buying every piece of stereo equipment I could (the old saying for Okinawa is true...the only place you go broke saving money!!). Thats a 20" woofer with a 30 lb magnet (same size Phil uses but i believe his are a 'tad" better!)Entire system was a nightmare to set-up but once it was...watch OUT! Yes, thats a turntable on the left and albums on the bottom shelf..hey "Terrapin Station!"..remember those? Teac reel to reel had nice stuff on tape (always ran at 15 ips). It had 6 speakers, one set is visible the other is on the other side. This faced a couch which had a couple of Cerwin-Vega's aimed sideways at your head for "fill-in" (made it great for aud tapes) powered by its own 100 watt amp which branched off the DBX switching console so the signal also ran to the main 200 watt receiver/amp. And for fun....yes, that the Pink Panther wired to look as if free-falling. Digital nowadays is nice, but i miss The Beast sooo bad!

i never got into the reel2reels, had a teac cassette recorder, and a sony, but when roommates have open parties..... set up like a bowling pin : ( thank goodness they left the albums

We had it pretty good (pre-digital)...the R>R at 1-3/4 ips was like a cassette and would hold like 8 hours of music, but when we came back from a show with the master cassette(s) 1st thing was put it on the R>R at 15 ips and from that we'd make copies...yes, technically they were 2nd gens but only an audio lab could tell the dif. Ran thru lots of tapes (oh...where did they go?????). It was work....my god, we made sooooo many copies for friends and tourheads, we'd buy cases of Maxells. Big dif nowadays with the equipment...hell, the digital recorders run off of 2 AA batteries. But I gotta give credit where it's due...Thank You Oade Bros!!!!! My fav tape to listen to is 9/7/85 Red Rocks..listen to it loud and you are RIGHT there. If you guys download off of archive.org or bt.etree and have a choice between someone's copy or an Oade copy, always pick the Oade...you won't be let down. I sound like a commercial for them and they have business now selling set-ups for new tapers http://www.oade.com/. For SBD's...Charlie Miller is the guy. The "new" matrix" tapes (aud & sbd mixed) are interesting but if I had my choice...always an aud...you can hear the "field"

I know!!! rebuilt almost all i had, now digital so easier to manage and crispy clear. Almost 1800 hours combined Dead, Ratdog, Phil, JGB, etc. I am working on my next system, right now just a patched together system but it rocks for what it is but i want a Mac 2300 amp, pre-amp, Hard Trucker speakers and a nice cd changer. All I really need for now but probably cost about $4000 for just that little bit...ahhh, its just $$$ right? LOL

Believe me, when the time was right (summer afternoons) we'd bring out just the cassette deck, small amp and the big speakers, set up on the deck outside and "play" dead shows......you could tell what song was playing from 3 blocks away!!! Really! I had understanding neighbors and would only do it once or twice a summer. Hate to keep "harping" on it but it was s sweet sounding system! Crystal clear and Phil and his "bombs" were right there! We'd sit about 30 feet away from it and it was as if the band was giving us a private show. At the time I put about $5,000 into it and if I purchased it here in the states it probably would have sold for twice that. The Teac reel to reel was only $450.00 overseas in '82.

Old school equipment
your system makes mine very old and ancient. my stereo still uses vaccum tubes to power it ! the preamp - mono/deadicated for each channel, power amps are mono blocks of 100 watts of power each. it's over 50 yrs. old, but the sound it delivers is to die for. those analog tapes and lp's just make it a beautiful time listening. even digital sounds great through these tube circuits.
