GOOD MORNING LITTLE SCHOOLGIRL
I've gotten several requests for this show, which features some feral Dead music from the Anthem of the Sun era.
Also included is Junior Parker's 1957 recording "Next Time You See Me," which Pigpen sang with the GD to great effect, and Pig himself singing his song "Operator" on American Beauty. I wonder why they didn't do that one live more often? I'm only aware of one performance, at the Fillmore East on 9/18/70.
Every Wednesday, we post a program from the Grateful Dead Hour archives for your enjoyment and enlightenment. You can browse or search the playlists at gdhour.com or on the GD Hour Search page, and let me know what program(s) you'd like to hear by emailing me at gdhour@dead.net.
Thank you for listening!

I always liked that song. I'm partial to Pig. Wondering why they didn't play that song more often either?

a fine, fine GDH, Golden West & thanks, David, for a great hour. No answer on either question why Operator and Clementine weren't played in concert more. Only one time for the former? Pretty amazing when considering the the scores of times every other tune on American Beauty was performed.
What I really like about this particular Viola Lee Blues is how the band takes us to far off space just long enough and then brings us back. I love it when that happens. Its not always such a stark moment and not sure why it works so well here. Suffice to say, it does and it is great!
I've always had the same question with regard to Clementine. How did that little gem not get performed more?
This is one of the all-time great GDH's in my view.

Hay David...
Great dead hour, and pretty good quality recording for such an early show..
I never saw the Dead at the Crystal Ballroom... See DSO a lot there
when they come to town.... In fact, seeing Dark Star Orchestra
there in April before heading out for some of the Dead spring
tour shows... Nice venue, but too small for the Dead
these days. But probably the best place in Oregon for a Dead show
is the country fair grounds in Veneta... Maybe if they do another summer
tour someday, I'd love to see another Veneta show!!!!!
Take care...
Cheers
