    Grateful Dead Hour no. 554

    Week of May 3, 1999

By request, a three-week series presenting the complete show of June 23, 1988 at Alpine Valley.

Weird thing about this recording: Sound man Dan Healy, that irrepressible experimenter, fed the vocals and Jerry's guitar into an automatic panning device that swished from left to right and back again about 60 times a minute. It seems unlikely that this effect was used on the recording but not in the house - anyone who attended that show recall hearing this weird effect?

All of set 1 in this week's post; set 2 will come in the next two weeks.

    Enjoy!

    jerry's energy and healy etc
that night at alpine was positively swishing left to right. it sort of wigged me out. i thought it was the shrooms playing tricks on me. i also recall garcia's energy flagging these last 2 nights--i recall i thought he was suffering diabetic symptoms.

I found an old cassette in my car with #556 (I think your playing that next week) I totally remember Jerry's swishy voice coming through. It is almost majestic. It was from the same shows. I can't wait to here this. I didn't here the whole show yet so you have made my day SHINE! Thank You! ____________________________________________________ Will you come with me? I meant to say in two weeks you'll be playing that one. The Morning Dew on that show really is unbeleivable beautiful with the Swishy Jerry Sound. I think you will be able to hear that effect the best on that song. GRATEFUL!!!!!!____________________________________________________ Will you come with me? Yes, I recall the swishing. But, the thing about Alpine was that because of its size and because of the occasional wind currents whipping through the valley, there was often, in my ears, swishing and swirling. I never could quite figure whether it was Healy twisting things around or if it was something else (whether internal or external). The info about the panning trick for this show helps make sense of things although my recall is not exactly sharp - '88 had the long, HOT stint at Alpine and by this, the 4th show, I was feeling a bit fuzzy! Thanks for taking me back David! "She has no pain, like a child, she is pure, she is not to blame."

I remember this one very well. Dealing with the hot Wisconsin drought, with alot of help from the Rainbow folks, really had a way of bringing the crowd together. Most of our little tribe stuck it out for the whole run. From Dylan to Blackbird. Thanks for the flashback, David!

I was trying to remember if I was at Alpine Valley that year but thinking I wasn't - until you mentioned the drought. Drove up from Chicago area and on the way we saw a spark from a train start a small brush fire it was so dry! Thanks for jogging my increasingly foggy memory. I bet I had a good time at the show :) and certainly enjoyed listening to it again today! Thanks David!

Clincher, since you were at the show...do you remember that Blackbird where Phil messes up the words and everyone (band and deadheads) laughs and Bobby so diligently gets everyone back on track?____________________________________________________ Will you come with me? This show is one of my favorites of the many Alpine shows that I had the pleasure of attending. Jerry was absolutely on fire during the Morning Dew, both vocally and on guitar! I still get chills every time that I listen to it. During Blackbird after they all started laughing and then finally got the song back on track, I have never heard an audience get so quite at a Dead show.

Egross, I can imagine how cool that would have been to be there live. I know that anything earlier than '79 get's knocked around, but I must say, this show must have been "too much of everything is just enough!" I tip my hat to all that went, cuz I wasn't even a Deadhead yet by the time of this show! ____________________________________________________ Will you come with me?
