September 26 - October 2, 2011
Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll hang out in the 1980s, with music from 1981, 1985 and 1988.
Our first selection this week is from 7/11/81 at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, WI, where we have the start of the second set: Brent birthday joke, Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance, Ship Of Fools, He's Gone>Truckin'>Drums>Space>Other One. A good portion of this show is missing from the vault, but what is here is excellent. The Other One cuts off here, due to the master tape ending. It's quite a vocal treatment on The Other One, somewhat Dylan-esque.
Next up is one of the more famous bits of music from 1985, the start of the second set from 6/30/85 at Merriweather Post Pavillion, featuring Shakedown Street>Samson and Delilah, Gimme Some Lovin'>He's Gone>Cryptical Envelopment. Like many of you, this was one of my first tapes, received shortly after the show in later 1985.
Finally this week is the entire first set from the 6/26/88 show at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, PA, featuring. Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo > Little Red Rooster ; When Push Comes To Shove ; Mama Tried > Big River ; Cumberland Blues ; Gentlemen Start Your Engines ; Big Railroad Blues ; The Music Never Stopped. This was the first and penultimate live version of Brent's Gentlemen Start Your Engines.
Be sure to stop by next week for more tunes from the vault. And as always, feel free to write to us at the email address below.

lame-ish title; played twice; irritating refrain (g-g-g-g-g-g-g-gentlemen start)
HOWEVER I do like the feel of the song.
Oh well. Why am I analyzing something that happened in 1988?
ANOTHER 88 first set.
The riots were in the Spring of '89. This was summer '88, twixt Buckeye and SPAC and perfectly peaceful.
If your could just see me smile!
You out do yourself all the time!
You amaze me!
Excellent tapes this week for sure!
AND I know you know
how much I love tapes and tapers!

now.;-) Great set!! Had me howlin in the fall at the Richmond run.
not really a joke is it? Two from Bob, Two from Jerry, lovin that Jam at the end of Truckin and always loved the drums>Space from these early 80's shows, too bad the other one is cut, would love to hear the rest of this. Thanks for the taste.
Thanks David!! was just jamming out to a similar sequence with friends yesterday, great to hear this stuff today ^_^
Jerry's just riffin on the lead into drums!!!
The jam in the middle of Shakedown is epic. All-around great set, particularly for '85 imo. Thanks!
