It seems to be a manifestation of ego to think that thousands of people are out there saying to themselves "Hmmm, couldn't get a ticket for the rehearsal so I think I'll just show up and maybe get in to see them practice." Judging by the lack of posts so far in the New Furthur Shows Announced thread it seems like people are not excited at all. It seems clear that the scheduling of small venues to get them to sell out is a tactic of perception management... makiing it look like Furthur is more popular than it actually is. People are just not excited and that is a result of the disappointment from The Dead spring tour this year, despite Blair Jackson's attempt to spin it with his highlights story, Personally, I like Furthur. I think John was an excellent pick for lead guitarist and that the tone and tempo of the tunes is really lovely. They now seem to be hitting the stride that corresponds with their ages and is indicative of where they are in life -- well into the Big Fade. It seems really appropriate. I love it and support it. But I wouldn't attempt to crash a rehearsal and really don't think an admnonition not to come is in order. C'mon guys, get real. 1987 is over. 22 years ago. ~ Summers fade and roses die ~

Dear Iamagonzo,I have the most beautiful Knock Out Rose plant in my kitchen and it just keeps blooming - with proper trimming of course. It's sad to see a rose plant die, I have witnessed it and it is so very sad- knowing it won't ever bloom again. I bury them too, they like to go back to the soil. Your comment on roses die, well it certainly doesn't pertain to this house. Maybe you should pinch yourself once or twice for Christmas to make sure your still living. And 1987 was a good year, to be sure but many have come since it left. (Additionally, Elvis still moves me...same song, same beat, same recording, same same same and I love it. Oh let him be your teddy bear! I don't want to be your tiger cause tigers play to ruff...) When you love something, why stop? I still love Brent and Jerry like it was yesterday and visit our most excellent rockin shows in my memories and love it. It's my heart's delight to have Phil and Bobby riffing out to Cosmic Charlie, ahhh love it! Jeff, Jay, John and Joe playing with them is incredible. I watched them in New Jersey and everything I Iove was everywhere around me. I hope to God that never changes, let us all drop off one by one and the may the music never stop. The pathway to essential human freedom is the essence of Grateful Dead Music. A place to experience the absolute freedom in a physical place embracing the utmost truth within yourself and mending that, healing it and sometimes arriving at let it be. There is a fruitful part of the population that has tended their spiritual gardens with this music and have grown to not only nuture a vast majority but additionally themselves. Many that wander are not lost, however, many are and to those I send hope and real live blooming lives where world changing and awe inspiring things are yet to come. Sadder yet are nah sayer's whose unloving blows strike not only the mind but the heart (it hurt's me too). I hope everyone gets to see the guys practice that ever loved them, it will the most intimate time, wish I was getting a turn. Too bad many will miss the gift that was right there in front of them and then caw at the fact it arrived in the first place. I will be there first chance I get, and you'll want to be at the next show, to be sure! There's lotz of love in this message, hope you'll find it in time for Christmas. Merry Chistmas to ALL and to ALL a good night! New Year's Eve there's a Celebration of many events occuring, hope you'll be counting the reasons. DEAD TOUR 2009! BAND OF BROTHERZ 2009! FURTHER 2009! PERSUASIONS 2009! MICKEY HALL OF FAMER 2009! BILLY IS HONORED 2009! JIM AND EVY 'S GIFT 2009! And ALL THE BEAUTIFUL DEADHEADS REUNTIE 2009! UNBROKEN CHAIN 2009! REX FOUNDATION 2009! THERE'S A BAND OUT ON THE HIGHWAY 2009 ! 2009 ROCKED! I am not dead today so I will live and celebrate, I may die tommorow so why wait. I am thinking this band I like to hang out with feels the same way. Maybe you can check out the GOlden ROad to Unlimited Devotion, it's a grate place. If we could thrive with that for one another, who could fail? All right this Rambling Rose is done rambling and I must be moving on. I had fun writing this so no harm done. Merrrrrrrrryyyyyy Chhhhhhhrrrrrrrrrisssstttmmmmmmmmasssssssssssss 2009! To ALL the Heads: My Love X~~~~~~ Sherbear ---------{-----@ Hey come right away NYE is on the way! PS YOUR SCREEN NAME HAS CAUSED THESE THOUGHTS. Iamagonzotoo. Gonzo was great and I've never stopped loving him either. Hope you'll get your Gonzo to practice and meet me on rail for a real gool time. Maybe we should have one Furthur show deadicated to the muppets: The .orgers could take turn being the funny two old guys in the balcony, Jay can be Animal, Phil can be Fozie Bear, Bobby can be the Swedish Chef, John can be Kermit, Jeff can be Mr. Jazz with the Gold Tooth, Joe can be the Scientist and you can be the Great Gonzo and I will be Janis. Probally -- only in a dream, but a very funny one...waka waka waka! ((((((Screennames)))))) SherBear

@iamagonzo... This live rehearsal has nothing to do with ego...and I think you are seriously underestimating the interest in Furthur. The ability to play small venues is hampered by the parking lot effect, and the band knows that every show will attract more people than can be accommodated. Fox Oakland was a bit of a mess outside...and these small places in Marin cannot really tolerate that kind of collateral damage. I see it as a way to get the tunes locked down in front of a live audience before filling a stadium to hear it. The choice is clearly logistical and musical. Maybe the dark is from your eyes...2009 was the time of return!

You miss the point amana, which is the ego part of saying "respect the band's wishes, don't come if you don't have a ticket". THAT is what I was making a comment about... In case you haven't noticed, we've all gotten a bit older and a bit wiser. The time is long, long, long gone when I used to see people wrap themselves in blankets and hurl themselves through plate glass windows to crash a show. Worrying about the decor of the parking lot scene with the mostly 35 and over crowd is inane to the point of being assanine. There really isn't that much excitement or that much energy behind these shows so the remark is totally unnecessary and seems superladen with ego. Know what? I'm actually happy about that. As I am happy about John K. As I am happy about the pace and tempo of these song being played. I love Furthur! Did you miss that part? What I really want to know, amana, is are you Phil's wife? ~ Won't you lay it way back? ~

No, I get that you love Furthur, as do we all or we wouldn't be discussing these shows. I just think it's time to recognize that unruly lot behavior--even at its best--rules out a lot of venues. I don't like not being able to go to these rehearsals, but I can understand the reason. You may not have seen it, but the Fox shows were marred by several incidents of obnoxious, even violent rowdiness outside. I saw several fistfights erupt. There was one spunion who refused to stop beating his drum and screaming about his right to do so. Most of the bad actors were young and ticketless. By Sunday night, a squadron of police was dispatched to keep things on lockdown. These rehearsal shows are selling out more or less instantly...even though each head has to buy their own ticket, even though no scalpers are able to resell them. That says to me that a lot of interest is indeed surrounding these small shows. Older heads I know are blase, but there is a whole generation of those who "missed out" and we are pretty stoked. I am not Phil's wife (I'm in my early twenties) but I accept the band's explanation and that this style of restricted performance is the only way to achieve the goal here. That said, we're heading to the City for the two shows we can go to, and hope to see you there!

Chuckling at myself...over the letter "L".A capitol "L" would have been better for me to understand. So, it's Lama Gonzo which means: A Highly Realized Individual. lamagonzo Glad I got confused...I really laughed hard a few times typing that. If I had know it sooner > my healing laughter would have not occured>>> proving great things can and do happen when your confused. Please accept my humble apology for misreading your screen name. In all honesty, the laughter was marvelous! I love you and all the lamagonzos too, SherBear PS Hope you laughed a little yourself! ;)

If Furthur didn't want to have a scene they should have gone somewhere private and done their rehearsals with just close friends and family in attendence and not let anybody else know. If there is rowdiness and violence about, that would seem like the appropriate thing to do, not advertise it on the internet and tell people not to come. That is the recipe for disaster. Want to make it even weirder? Yeah, put it in a masonic hall -- all the flying eyeballs will try to make it into the triangle. I sure liked the scene a lot more when everybody was stroked on acid and shrooms. I do hope everybody behaves these two nights. It sure is a treat to be able to see a reharsal! Sherbear: ...I don't take myself seriously on this site, and neither does anybody else. Around here most people think a lama is a llama (not an iiama). I was only giving you the literal definition in Tibetan of the word "Lama", not in any way implying that >>>(I)<<< was a lama. There are a few other lamagonzos around, but we were always a unique breed: To weird to live, to rare to die. See you at the rehearsal tonight (~):-)} ~ That sweet, sweet jelly so good ~

for the rehearsal with my posse. Been hangin' in my friend's crib in Soquel and it's time to hit the road in the boy's psychedelic painted, perfectly California preserved, hearse and head up PCH 1 and on over the Gate to Marin. My wife and I happened to be lucky enough to get tickets but the rest of the posse are just going along for the ride. And they are liquored up and looking for trouble! I told them not to come. Mama told them not to come. This ain't the way to have fun, son. But they won't listen to us... What to do? Maybe we'll ditchem' in SF. Yeah, thats it. I sure wouldn't want amanamission and Phil's wife to be mad at me and the Mrs.. Time to get off this damn internet. We'll start eating the shrooms soon as we get over the bridge. Happy trails everyone! I hope to upload to archive when I get back to Soquel tonight, if I still have my shit together, that is. ~ Drink down a bottle and they're ready to kill ~

Checked tix wanted vine, people all ready looking for tickets for east coast swing, checked ticketmaster, no tix available for asheville show thru their site. Seems to me there is a demand for this music. Maybe the band doesn't want ticketless people at the venues due to the fact that it was the ticketless that destroyed the scene last go around. Perhaps if the ticketless stay home, there won't be anyone out there to buy from the scalpers, who should be left out in the cold anyway. Maybe this band is playing small venues just to see what demand is for them, I don't think it is ego. I think they Know what could happen at such small venues. The Tabernacle only holds 2600 people, Thomas wolfe, less than 5000. As these shows sell out quickly, demand for tickets will naturally go up. Hopefully, there won't be a hugh amount of ticketless heads, but I have a feeling there will be. I am really looking forward to John's appearance with Bob and Phil. If for only a moment, I can get that feeling that Jer gave us all, it will be well worth it. "What a long strange trip it doobie, doobie, doobie..." Ken Kesey

that's the 1st time I've ever heard anyone call Hwy 1 PCH in Northern Cal. Thought that was reserved for Southern Cal., but I guess not-you went last night? Did we see each other & not know it? We're the 2 that some younger heads (ok, they're my son's age) thought we had seen the band in the '60's......heh-they were right on that one

From looking at a map it's looks like Mill Valley is a pretty small town. I think the band is just doing a favor for the people who live there by asking people without a ticket not to come. And with only one ticket per person and a photo ID required to get in so they are sure who everybody is, who knows what could happen, I hope somebody who goes will fill us in.

...always flip. We didn't go. Was just trying to wig out the girls and make my point. Do wish I could have been a fly on the wall and watched the people at the rehearsals. I really don't think there is a "scene" developing here though. If there is, it is flying way under radar. Barton Hall DID sell out though... nostalgia, students? Who knows? Hey, I hope I'm wrong. You really can't go by what you see on this site. Do you think there was some old guys who owned houses in the Haight in 1965 who said "These damn hippies are bringin' down the property values. We gotta get these rowdy people out of our neighborhood!" My oh my, how the tables have turned! C'mon, don't say you can't see the irony here, eh? Listen closely to Furthur... Can you see the progression and feel the energy? I really like it. I think it is so appropriate. Haven't had a lot to rejoice about with these guys since 93, except for The Other Ones 2002 tour. It feels good to sing their praises once again after a long time and, like other people have pointed out, who knows how much longer it will be? ~ Maybe you had too much too fast. Or just overplayed your part! ~

... Just went to the VWA box office yesterday and got mine. I asked if they thought this would sell out and they said NO. This is hard to believe! Come on now N. New England deadheads! Come on out and support this band. This is the kind of venue (smallish hockey rink) that became very rare as a tour venue. There are no other Prov/Bos/Worc. venues on this tour, you gotta go to ZooMass in Amherst or Manchester, NH. Also got a ticket for Utica (General Admission, ahh -- the good ole' days). I, for one, am grateful for this lineup and something to break up this unbelievably snowy and cold winter...
