Sirius Satellite Radio Launches "Tales From The Golden Road" on January 20th

So far, the recently-launched Grateful Dead Channel on Sirius Satellite Radio has been pretty much about wall-to-wall music by the Dead and its musical descendents, 24 commercial-free hours a day. And that suits us all just fine. But we also know that when Dead Heads aren't listening to the music, they love talking about it, and other subjects near and dear to our community.

Bearing that in mind, the Grateful Dead Channel proudly announces Tales From The Golden Road, a live monthly forum with an emphasis on conversation and audience participation. Grateful Dead members and other guests will join hosts David Gans and Gary Lambert in the studio to discuss a different topic each month, with listeners invited to call in with questions and comments.

The first program, to be broadcast on Sunday, January 20th at 4 pm (ET), will focus on the Trips Festival, the trailblazing 1966 event that helped put the San Francisco music scene on the national map, and was a crucial moment in the development of the Grateful Dead as a performing band and cultural phenomenon.

Joining the discussion will be filmmaker Eric Christensen, who attended the Trips Festival and has just released a fascinating documentary on the event; Grateful Dead biographer/publicist Dennis McNally, who will provide insight into the historical context; and Bob Weir, who saw it all from the inside and lived to tell the tale. Also featured will be audio segments evoking the event, and some Grateful Dead music from the band's formative days.

The Grateful Dead Channel can be found at Channel 32 on Sirius Satellite Radio. If you're not yet a Sirius subscriber, you might want to check out the free three-day trial the service is offering, which will not only allow you to sample all that glorious Dead music, but any of Sirius' other 100-plus channels of music, talk and information for every taste.

    Thank you for sharing
Very cool format of stories, songs & discussions. I caught a piece of the rebroadcast (1/21/08) this morning going into work talking about the Trip Festival. I’ve been reading the Bill Graham Presents: My Life Inside Rock and Out & this topic was discussed in 1 of the chapters. To hear the stories this morning solidifying what the book shared made me want to find out more! So I’m awaiting a copy of the Trip Festival DVD I heard mentioned & ordered it this morning. I was born in ’76 & just recently of about 5 years ago got into The Grateful Dead heavily. I know I missed the ride LIVE but I’m surely enjoying the stories & memories being kept alive & shared on Sirius & here. I felt blessed hearing Mountain Girl & Bobby both on the same show as guest...Just....a very cool speechless feeling! I just have to say that I'm very much appreciative of what’s being done as a whole to share these types of experiences & keep the excellent stories alive. I cannot say Thank You enough.

I was sitting in the back yard yesterday listening to this show and although most of the callers were unintelligible, the show was great! Gans and Lambert were good hosts and the Trips Festival documentary sounds really interesting. They also had Mountain Girl, Dennis McNally, and Bobby on the phone, though Bobby was much more interested in the football game than the conversation!!I gotta say that Mountain Girl and Dennis McNally are GREAT radio guests! They had such good stories and insight. The story that Dennis told about the security guards at the Trips Fest eating ice cream that was secretly dosed was hilarious! And the story that Mountain Girl told about the very young Jerry and Pigpen getting thrown out of Neil Cassady's parties, because they looked too dirty and incorrigible to be accepted into the Stanford group was classic... I think that Mountain Girl should have her own show on Sirius, or at least Gans and Lambert should devote one of these shows to interviewing her and getting more stories out of her!! Overall, I would say this was a great first show and I look forward to hearing more. But, you might want to mix in a call screener to weed out the heads with nothing to say!! KUDOS!

I have been a Dead-Head for many years. I got Sirius just over two years ago and loved it, & the new Grateful Dead channel is now my favorite one. You never know what will be played next, and that's fine with me because it's all great!
