Glad of this post. I remember 20 years ago when I lived on the east coast, when the Dead scene was bursting at the seams so to speak, I used to always go to shows with garbage bags, and would spend at least an hour at every gig I attended roaming the parking lot with rubber gloves picking up garbage.
In retrospect I wanted to protect the places the band were in jeopardy of not being able to play again, but also felt it was my duty to keep the scene clean so to speak. It was amazing how awfully dirty and trash strewn some of these venues parking lots could get.
I hope I made a difference. I'm always one to give back to what is given me. That being music from the cosmos. And funny, because one of those times I spent a couple of hours pre-show at the Capital Centre filling up garbage bags, and lo and behold, when the band broke into Ripple during the encore that night, I remember thinking that it was speaking to me also. As I had made my ripple in still water with picking up after others.
I still have not heard that show since that night. I will find it on tape/cd eventually. It was one of those special ones. I'll never forget the INTENSE energy when the house lights went on and it spilled right out into the parking lot.
I love my band......though they be no more......I love my scene, which will always be forever there. ; )

"Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free..." through a few billion humans on it addicted to fossil fuels and see what happens.
Corn for Ethonal, Soy for Biofuels both are food sourced feedstocks selected to "Ease" our Oil habit. More than 75% of the biomass which became liquid hydrocarbons over the course of millions of years is algae.
The DOE is rumored to be reopening it's aquatic species program which operated between 1978 through 1996 studying algae and it's potential. I encourage everyone to contact their Congressmen and Representatives and demand greener minded legislation and funding.
This Earth Day we can celebrate a slight acknowledgement by the general public that we need to control, contain and conserve our actions, reactions and resources.

Rainforest Benefit
Remember that show at MSG with Hornsy, Suzanne Vega and others? That was a wonderful night.
There was an urgency then to saving the rainforest. Alas, a recent TIME cover story discussed how the rainforest is now being destroyed to plant soy/corn for bio fuels which will not help global warming and will result in people around the world starving because we Americans need to feed our cars more than we need to feed the worlds people.
Something's going to give and when it does we'll deserve it.

I really appreciated the chance to talk on the program yesterday David. One can't do enough to keep our home base (earth) safe and clean it seems, but if we all pitch in, do our share, progress can be made.
What I've found very interesting is the difference of growing up on the east coast for the better part of 30 years, and the last 19 on the west coast (Portland, OR), and the difference in how things are done environmentally. Recycling has always been around here in P-town since I've been here, but when I take a trip home to D.C. (well, it has been 6 years), people are still throwing pop cans in the garbage (?). Same goes for when I visit family who live in Texas.
Now maybe it has changed, as it's been awhile since I took a trip back east. But if we as a country (better if it were as a race called "mankind" earth-wide) could all get on the same page environmentally, in even just "one" aspect of all that entails, that would be a huge step in making our home a better one for not just us, but for our kids and their kids and so on.
I only know that my kids have grown up with recycling, and they think it's really odd that in some places right here in the good ol' US of A, that they don't recycle. I'm so glad that they have grown up that way and have that outlook on it, which they'll pass on down to their kids one day.
It's a complicated bright blue ball that's spinning spinning free full of us. And the environment is just one slice of the pie. And ya know, Barlow and Weir are right, it's dizzying with possibility.
Plant the seed, let it grow, keep it clean, keep it green, do your part, it's a start, have some heart, make it your art, show the world, teach it well, take good care of where you dwell.

My one memory of the Hollywood Bowl show:
My best friend and I had seats to the right of the soundboard (there were quite a few empty seats around us.) Someone (Healy?) set up a 1/2 sheet of plywood with rows and rows of RCA plugs for folks to plug into. I don't think anyone did - darn!
I sure would like a soundboard of that show. I did send Charlie Miller's recent aud of the show to my buddy - after all these years still my best friend. To be able to share those experiences with someone is the best Dead experience.
