ACORN and voting

I just read the article above. It cited 2 dead folks who appear to have cast ballots. Absentee, sent in by someone else? They don't say. They don't give any figures about how many actual fraudulent votes occurred. They don't mention any evidence, or even charges, of an organized voter fraud effort. They do say that "The [State Auditor's Office] did not find any instances in which potentially ineligible voters actually voted" -- though the auditors obviously missed the 2 examples cited by the reporters.

Bottom line: There is no evidence anywhere in America that actual fraudulent voting is occurring on any scale that matters anywhere in the country, despite the Republican Party's near-hysterical hyperbole about it for the last several years.

ACORN is frequently the boogie-man in these charges. ACORN hires low-income folks to go out and collect signatures, and they pay them by the number they turn in. Some of those signature gatherers defraud ACORN by making up names. There is absolutely no evidence that anyone so "registered" has actually ever shown up to cast a ballot. This is a non-issue.

Actually, it's more than a non-issue, more than just a red herring. It's part of an organized campaign by the right wing to disenfranchise as many new voters, poor voters and minority voters as possible. With their baseless cries of voter fraud, they've pushed through draconian "election reforms" all across America.

These "reforms" make it a little harder for new voters to register, and ensure that existing voters who might not have a stable address or a driver's license (i.e., the poor and minorities) are much more likely to get kicked off the voter rolls. In a close race, depressing the other side's vote by 2 or 3 percent is all you need to do, and that's what this whole "vote fraud" hysteria is about.

Jerry was pretty much a libertarian in spirit (and I agree that if he were alive, the Dead would not be doing a benefit for any politician -- though they might for a group like ACORN). Most of us identify with the Libertarians' concern for civil liberties and individual rights. But the willingness of many libertarians to identify with the right wing, and embrace spurious causes like this, keep me and others from taking them seriously as a force for positive change.

I wouldn't be happy if they were playing a rally for McCain or Barr either.

I DO NOT HAVE TO LOOK AT A COMPUTER AGAIN UNTIL AFTER THE SHOW, THANK GOD! OBAMA HAS A BETTER CHANCE OF BEING A GREAT LEADER THAN MCCAIN DOES. MCCAIN HAS BEEN AROUND FOR EVER AND HAS NOT DONE MUCH EXCEPT FOR BLOCK MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY IN HIS HOME STATE. OBAMA HAS RISEN QUICKLY AND MAY BE THE SHOOTING STAR THIS NATION NEEDS RIGHT NOW!
Many of us agree with the surviving members idea that Obama may bring back a greater level of freedom than the last president believed in. Mccain seems to want to pander to the hate mongers!

PS Rest in peace Reganomics

relax... just because some Bob Barr supporters (Silentlyscreaming) are trolling this forum doesn't mean we can't have normal... or somewhat normal discussions on politics.

ACORN is nothing. last I checked it NOTHING...NO CHARGES... SQUAT has come out of this investigation. Furthermore even if ACORN did falsify records...a real living person has to show up with real, existing ID to vote...so registering votes means squat when people actually have to go o th3 booth.

Anyways Silentlyscreaming aka BOB BARR is barking up the wrong tree on this forum. Outnumbered and ill-equipped I'd say.

To Ed...

So, it wasn't you who said:

>> The problem with the brainwashed is that they don't realize that they are brainwashed.

Way down here in the US, we call that name-calling. I now see you didn't start the Marx garbage...so I apologize. And, for the record - you sound incredibly pompous when you direct such incredibly patronizing phrases as, "The latin phrase I used is qute common now in English," and my personal favorite, "I guess up here in Canada, we might be a bit more erudite than you?"..
Get a grip on yourself, Western.
Finally, my statement may have been reactionary - but it was not because you oppose my views. If you take a deep breath of reality, you may find out that there ARE people who can accept several opposing views. I was being reactionary to you seemingly referring to anyone voting for Obama as "brainwashed."
You come across (and I'm not saying this is how you ARE as a person, just how you come across with your posting) as someone who feels as if they're of a far higher level of intelligence than anyone here. I'm not going to get into a pissing contest of who's smarter - because I'd never understimate anyone. But, personally, I'm done with you - you bore me.

sure will be nice

once the elections are over and we can get back on the human tracks....

Well, I don't exactly know
What's going on in the world today
Don't know what there is to say
About the way the people are treating
Each other, not like brothers

Leaders take us far away from ecology
With mythology and astrology
Has got some words to say
About the way we live today
Why can't we learn to love each other
It's time to turn a new face
To the whole world wide human race

Stop the money chase
Lay back, relax
Get back on the human track
Stop racing toward oblivion
Oh, such a sad, sad state we're in
And that's a thing

really.... enjoy the show

The Dead political? NOooo, no, never. What about Throwing Stones, We Can Run, Greenpeace? I think Libertarian ideas are fine. Nobodys business if you do. Great. However, I know I feel like the stakes are too high in this one. I think the band and a lot of the country does too, so for some to suggest that they have somehow "lost it" is just not fair. Just because somebody is not voting for one of the third parties does not make them sheep. We all know we have two choices for this election and Mccain or the Republican party is nowhere near Libertarian ideas. I've seen many, too many, non violent friends lives ruined with their SOCIAL policies. I know Obama will not be perfect, but no one or no system will ever be. I don't love Democrats, REALLY! but I believe he is not just another party hack. Conservative because of your money and taxes? LOL, look at the economy! So much for trickle down. Bush and Mccain want to buy up mortgages and banks with tax money. THAT smells like socialism to me. The next president could decide supreme court majority as well. Really? Really??? Seriously? Deadheads for conservative justices? I have a hard time with that one. Deadheads for nukes??? Just so you know, my wife is voting Libertarian. I feel she is throwing it away, but ...
Deadheads for Mccain? Anyway, don't want to go to this show? Don't go.

The whole Jerry rolling in his grave thing: Somewhere around here in a book, there is clearly a pic of him along with Mickey and MG and most of the band at the WHITE HOUSE in 93 before a Cap Centre show. Can't find it off the top of my head but I know it's in there. Also, a pic with Leahy. Didn't Clinton and Al Gore hang out backstage at atleast one RFK show too? I'm pretty sure. BTW:

Jerry Garcia:
ON BILL CLINTON: Let's face it, the guy was the governor of Whatchamacallit — I mean, Marin County has more money than Arkansas, for Christ's sake. So I'm not convinced he can do a great job. Though I think he wants to.
ON AL GORE: He's a good guy. He's definitely a hands-on kind of guy. The environment has a shot with Gore in there. I know Al Gore. He wears my ties.

WERE ANY OF YOU AT THE RFK SHOWS IN THE EARLY '90'?!??!?!

I WAS!

What I recall was they 'Boys' that some of you jerks are all over inviting Al Gore onto the stage when he was the VP of this country... FROM WHAT I REMEMBER ALSO IS THAT JERRY WAS AT THESE SHOWS PERFORMING SOME GREAT GUITAR WORK....

Politics is a volatile subject though but let's all remember that the one and only' Jerry, that every one has to diefy, was inded aware of the political enviornment in this country and on this planet when he was on it and not just doing coke and heroin ALL DAY long...
