Grateful Dead Channel Launches Exclusively on Sirius

Highly anticipated channel will feature original radio shows hosted by members of the band, rare concert performances and insider interviews.

NEW YORK – August 29, 2007 – SIRIUS Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) today announced the launch of the highly anticipated Grateful Dead Channel. Heard exclusively on SIRIUS, the channel will feature music spanning the Grateful Dead’s long and celebrated history. The channel will include rare and unreleased performances, original shows hosted by Grateful Dead founders Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, as well as rare archival interviews with Jerry Garcia.

The Grateful Dead Channel will make its debut on September 7 at 12 PM ET on SIRIUS channel 32 with an extremely rare concert broadcast of the band’s 1974 performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California. This performance will be followed by a special show hosted by Bob Weir, the first by a member of the Grateful Dead on the new channel. The channel will also feature contributions from Grateful Dead expert David Gans, as well as Dead archivist David Lemieux, who will provide a unique look into the Dead’s lush past with daily insights.

"Since we announced the launch of the Grateful Dead Channel, it has become one of the most anticipated music channel launches in our history.” said Scott Greenstein, President, Entertainment and Sports, SIRIUS. “The loyalty and passion of Grateful Dead fans are the truest testament to the band’s legacy. Sirius is thrilled to bring exclusive content to this community and welcomes their continued participation as Sirius becomes part of the Grateful Dead family.”

“This is gonna be one fun channel,” said the Dead’s Bob Weir. “We, the guys in the band, get to be involved as much as we can and we'll make sure it's fun. We want the fans to be involved as well.”

The Grateful Dead formed in mid 1960’s San Francisco’s psychedelia and quickly became a staple in the local music scene. The historic summer of 1967, known as ‘The Summer of Love,’ is when the band first found world wide recognition as thousands of young people from around-the-world made their way to San Francisco’s Haight and Ashbury district to find a new social experience. The Dead, well-known for constantly touring, kept the experience alive for another three decades with a devoted community of fans, many of whom traveled the country with them.

The Grateful Dead Channel joins an exclusive line up of 24-hour, commercial-free music channels dedicated entirely to some of the world's greatest recording artists including Elvis Radio, the world's only official, all-Elvis Presley radio channel broadcasting live from Graceland; and Siriusly Sinatra, devoted to the music and legacy of Frank Sinatra. SIRIUS has previously dedicated channels exclusively to the music of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, The Rolling Stones, David Gilmour and Pink Floyd, George Strait, and most recently, The Who. SIRIUS is also the exclusive radio home of Shade 45, the uncut hip-hop channel co-created with Eminem, "Little Steven" Van Zandt's Underground Garage, channel 25, and Jimmy Buffett's Radio Margaritaville, channel 31.

    Wow!
Listening to 4/2/73 Boston Garden this evening was a blast! As a truck driver, there ain't no feelin' like 18 wheelin' and kickin' it with some HOT '73. It's a satellite infused audio cure for road-rage, and I dig it.

That was the best Looks Like Rain I've ever heard! I love Bobby's rap... is it true that he had broken up with his girlfriend the day before?? 'Cause he's boilin over!! Also the best Far From Me that I've ever heard... awesome... Nice choice!

    damn sirius
I have XM, came with my truck (yes I had to renew It), but thats what my truck is set up for. To switch to sirius I would have to spend extra for the set-up. Its tempting. I would like the Dead channel and sirius has Nascar too(now, XM had it). XM sent me a letter of the merge so I would be still waiting. I dont think I will switch even for the Dead and or Nascar. I hope the government just lets them merge. I listen to Deep Tracks most. Oh well, I guess the war goes on, there is my ten cents.

Let's here some more input folks. I've been looking forward to reading everyones comments. Give's me something to do--break away from work. What suggestions would anyone have for the station. I would like to here special segments, like "A Brent Hour" where all they play is Brent songs. Or cover tunes. ie:" Dead doing the Stones, Beattles ect... Rare encore's. I don't know, just a thought.

I was given Sirus 2 years ago to listen to Howard Stern, ...then came the Dead. This was the best gift I every got!!!!! It ROCKS!!!! I listen all the time, at work, at home and I toggle back & forth between the two. I couldn't have wished for anything more!

I got Sirius earlier this summer after becoming bored with the XM programing and Jam On(Sirius) was the main reason for that switch. Now that the GD channel up and running, I have not listened to anything else. They have been playing a very good assortment of music and have selected some mighty fine complete shows to air. Over Labor Day weekend they did extended jams all weekend (extended weekend special). I am as happy as a clam.... Dead 24-7.

I'm as jacked as the next guy about the GD channel on Sirius, but do we REALLY have to (or want to) hear a barely audible recording of Hollywood Bowl '74 every few days? I thought the selection of this recording was questionable at best for the debut last week, then I hear it being played again this evening (Thurs, 9/13), and the sound quality has not gotten any better. C'mon, there's GOTTA be some quality SBDs in the vault that can be aired, it's a little early in the channel's life to start repeating shows, isn't it? Tell you what, I've got about 550 hrs of quality in my collection, I will be happy to lend you some till you get this radio thing figured out. Other than that, I love the channel!

Ya know, I did question the repeating of shows as well. Sup with that? Other than that, the station is killer. In the mean time gotta catch the Rat Dog shows. Penn's Peak Pa was an awesome venue. Just go the tix for Albany. Hope to see ya there--Nov 3. Always loved seeing the Dead up there. Haven't been back since. Very pumped.

The complete live shows will repeat two (or is it 3?) times each week. Not everybody is going to be listening 24/7, y'know. You heard it twice, but some people didn't hear it at all. GD Hour blog Station list

I listened to the Ratdog show aired yesterday (9/14) from Columbus, OH 7/17/07 and was REALLY diggin' it. I saw Ratdog a few years ago and wasn't very into it, but this show was a great listen. Hearing Bobby have a go at some Jerry tunes (Shakedown St., He's Gone and others), with a healthy dose of Dylan songs thrown in was very enjoyable, indeed. Was hoping for a 'Black Throated Wind', I'll just have to keep listening. Kudos!!

RadDog is probably one of the hotter bands playing. I catch Phil shows too. If you like long Jammin show's, Phils it. If you like Bobby style, more singing, some jamming, Bobby's the one. Bobby is doing a great job. Still has the energy. It's not like the Dead where you go city to city, at least not for me. But when they come w/in 100 ml radius I have to see a show. Keep it up Bob.

Ratdog at PNC Bank in Holmdel, NJ was a really strong show. Bobby did a good job with Senor I thought the "Son this ain't a dream no more it's the real thing" line was perfect. Ratdog puts on more consistent shows IMHO whereas Phil's rotating lineup takes a while to get clicking. But hey - GD Channel - please no more Warren on GD32 unless he's playing with Dead members. He's already shoved down our throats incessantly on JamOn that's enough!

How great is it to have this GD channel on Sirius?? For a truck driver, it's an satellite-infused, amplified audio cure for roadrage. I caught the airing of Uptown Theatre, Chicago IL, 1/30/78 today (9/29) and was blown away! The 2nd set closing sequence of Estimated>Eyes>Stella>Franklin's Tower>Around&Around and a rockin' Johnny B. Encore had my 18 wheels actually levitating a couple feet of the pavement!! I have to eat my words from the earlier post regarding the replaying of shows, and hope that DGans will forgive me so I can catch a replay of this show. Definitely worth the subscription price this month!

Damn, this channel is so much fun... I find myself listening all the damn time.My TV is getting lonely. Major props are due to D.Gans and D.Lemieux for their work on this channel! I love both the complete shows and the history segment! Both Davids are introducing the shows/jams with historical contexts and stories as well as information on the provenance of the tape. It makes the music kind of come alive for me... I also had the good fortune to check out Billy's show the other day, "Drumming Into The Light" and it was really funny and interesting... he's a classic! All in all, I'm addicted to this channel and highly recommend it to all!
