June 13 - June 19, 2011
This week at the Tapers' Section we're going to do a similar format to last week, with an even shorter spam of 1980s Grateful Dead music: 1986 to 1989.
Our first selction is from RFK Stadium in Washington DC. Last week we played you the post-drums segment of the show, so this week we have decided to play the pre-drums segment from the 7/6/86 show, featuring: Saint of Circumstance>Iko Iko, Looks Like Rain, He's Gone. There are a couple of minor drop-outs during the music due to the fragility of the Beta PCM format (digital audio recorded on the video track of a betamax video tape), but overall these mid-80s PCMs mostly sound quite clean.
Next is more music from the excellent Laguna Seca run in 1988, with the end of he second set of the middle show, on 7/30/88, made up of Smokestack Lightnin' > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > Wharf Rat > Throwing Stones > One More Saturday Night. I can't think of too many shows in which Smokestack comes out of Space. Very cool.
Lastly this week is music from the final night at Alpine '89, on 7/19/89, with the start of the second set: Box Of Rain, Foolish Heart, Looks Like Rain, Terrapin Station. This was an exceptional run of shows, and unfortunately was the last time the Grateful Dead ever performed at Alpine. It rained at these shows. A lot.
Be sure to stop by next week to check out what we dig out of the vault for your enjoyment.
