You've Asked For Them, Here They Are...
DOWNLOADS!

Two magical, complete performances from Philadelphia in Fall '79, the basis for Road Trips, Vol. 1 No. 1. These Spectrum shows, 11/5/79 & 11/6/79, are now available in both FLAC and MP3; documenting the band in the midst of their sparkling three-week eastern swing and capturing the raw excitement of the first tours with keyboardist Brent Mydland.

Previously unreleased in their entirety, now you can hear both shows from start to finish. The 11/5 performance includes "China Cat" as the show opener and a standout set with "Eyes of the World > Estimated Prophet > Franklin's Tower." The next night features a 15-minute plus "Terrapin Station," along with an extended "Playin' in the Band" with solid contributions from keyboardist Brent Mydland.

This is a digital-only release, and you have the option of downloading each show separately (11/5/79 and 11/6/79), or saving 10% when you order the two full shows together!

update on pitch issues

avatar

So I've completed listening to all of 11/5 and concur that the speed is definitely slow from china cat thru estimated... it seems like the speed may pick up a bit but not at full "true" speed for franklin's > casey but it is hard to tell sometimes.. key is that I don't think the whole show is off by the same speed. Only other defect I could hear was a quick cut at the transition between saint and mag. Let me know if others have this. From Eyes on this is a great performance where the dead are really grooving... Now onto 11/6 and this too seems off in speed... looks like rain is even more stagnant that at normal speed :-)...

Fine shows worthy of purchase but would wait until all is cleared up technically. Look forward to hearing where things are on this front.

By the way in unrelated news got a message from dead.net that my egypt discs shipped yesterday. Can't wait!!!! Been a while since any new 5.1 surround video came out from the dead that wasn't 1990 or after.

Still Waiting

Rhino has known about the issue for a week and still no "official" response.PITIFUL! I won't be buying anymore downloads in the future.

Mrfuse I agree until Rhino

Mrfuse I agree until Rhino corrects all the problems that we have encountered with all of their releases I am going to be "slow playing" all of my purchases from now on. What sucks is that if you don't pre-order you typically will loose out on the bonus material.

Help?

Yeah, I bought this download a week ago and would still like to know what GD has to say about the pitch issue. I downloaded a software on my Mac to adjust the pitch song by song. There is no way to adjust the pitch exactly (2.7% or 40 cents as a previous post had suggested), but there is a slider control to increase the pitch and when adjusted slightly this show does sound much better.
I tried to research a program where I could adjust the pitch to an exact value, but to no avail. I have already spent to much time on an issue which should be clarified by GD, whom I assume are experts on such matters.

Mac pitch adjustment

Try Audacity. Google it. You can DL Mac or PC versions and it has a pitch adjustment function. It is a complicated package though so you may need some time to work it out if you are not (like me) very tech savvy.

Same here

As someone else brought up, I also barely know how to download FLAC files and burn them. I'm an old timer and I just don't know anything about doing the stuff to fix the pitch problem on my own so given the fact that I also bought these right away maybe you could put them up fixed for all of us who already paid. Pretty please and thanks.

I'd like to add my two cents

I'd like to add my two cents on the recent observations of our downloads from 11/5/79 and 11/6/79.

Beginning with Dick's Picks, Volume One, almost 15 years ago (yikes, that long!), Grateful Dead Records started a wonderful tradition of releasing live concert recordings. These releases generally were accompanied by a caveat emptor to remind listeners that although there were occasional acknowledged flaws and sonic anomalies, the shows were so good and deserving of a wider audience, the flaws were worth living with. Fans were getting the real-deal, warts and all. These releases were never to be confused with fully produced studio recordings. Our Road Trips compilations and Grateful Dead Download series are recent extensions of this tradition. These releases are once again spirited snapshots as opposed to more formal portraits from the band's tape vault.

As many of you know, I truly strive to make the Grateful Dead releases that I'm responsible for the best they can be. Accordingly, I spent a great deal of time to transform very dull and lifeless cassette source tapes from the band's 11/5/79 and 11/6/79 performances into recordings I was very pleased with. Rob B. has alertly noticed the new downloads of these shows are slightly off speed. As many of you know, cassette recorders notoriously record either too fast or too slow; if the playback machine doesn't play at the original record speed, the result will be off speed. Unfortunately this happened on this download. I'm sorry if this has lessened anyone's enjoyment of these great concerts.

Thanks,
Jeffrey Norman

No Fix?

Reads too me that there will be no fix.

It's like I said before "Look How Spoiled Digital Has Gotten Us" !! I guess we haven't been dealing with tape for soo long we forgot how to deal with these little things. And hey, alot of us have the abilty to change this if it bothers us too much. It's like Mr. Norman said Caveat Emptor. These recordings were made 29 years ago, and they've been sitting since then. So I think we all need to quit complaining. Check Out My Orignal Music at myspace.com/salaversano
