April 16 - April 22, 2012
Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music spanning 15 years of Grateful Dead history, 1974-1989.
Our first selection this is one of my favorite pieces of music in general, a 1974 version of Playing In The Band, this one specifically from 9/18/74 in dijon, france.
Next is music from the summer of 1981, specifically the start of the show on 7/7/81 in Kansas City. From this show we have New Minglewood Blues>Bertha>Dancing In The Street, Big Railroad Blues, El Paso, To Lay Me Down. You'll notice that this is the old Disco arrangement of Dancing In The Street, and I have no idea what prompted them to play it for the first time in more than 18 months , but I can hear here why they left it alone after this. They did revive it in 1984, but in its original arrangement.
Lastly this week is a timely selection from 7/18/89 at Alpine Valley. Timely because this Thursday, April 19, you can see this entire show in movie theaters across the country in pristine video. From this show we have the start of set 2 featuring Sugar Magnolia > Scarlet Begonias ; Man Smart (Woman Smarter) ; Eyes Of The World. Go to the movies! You'll dig it.
See you here next week with more tunes from the vault.
it just sounds so tinny to me.
I simply have a hard time getting off on GD87 and later.
That IS a fine transition between SM and SB; then we slop into MSWS.

7/18/89 just can't and doesn't compare to 9/18/74.
one of the FIRST shows I ever got on tape.
I distinctly remember calling my friend (the one who brought me to my first show) on the phone and saying, "More Dead...I need more Dead..." after hearing this show.
I am still collecting 30 years later.
7/31/74!!! I am looking forward to THAT.
God bless the Grateful Dead.
Great stuff Dave!! See you all at the movies!!!!
Thank you for the fine selections.
Something you repeatedly do, xo!
Have a glorious week!
And make it a glorious year too...
if your into that kinda thing.
if you seek it, it appears.
Not always in the most
expectant of places.
Peace and Love,
Oh yeah AND Music,
lots and lots of good music.
There, there good music.
A fine common ground, indeed.
A song to additionally enjoy this fine...
Monday, April 16th in the Year 2012.
Security was all over my ass with my effort to record FOB a few rows back from the stage. Thanks for rekindling that memory, DL.
Could you pass the Grey Poupon?
Right on Dijon!
Merci beaucoup Monsieur Lemieux
