Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Greetings, and welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have a double dose of the mid-70s, and a 1987 segment.

First up is the Grateful Dead playing in El Paso, TX, on 11/23/73, as part of the terrific Fall Tour of 1973. Although not quite to the level of the Denver shows that preceded this one, there is some great playing here, with Eyes Of The World, Around and Around>Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad>Casey Jones, Johnny B. Goode.

Next up is music from the Wall Of Sound, on the band's third tour with the huge sound system (the tours were in May, June, and July-August), featuring music from the first stop of this tour in Fresno, CA on 7/19/74, featuring the end of the first set: Scarlet Begonias, El Paso, Tennessee Jed, Playing In The Band.

Our final stop this week is on 9/12/87 in Landover, MD, at the Capital Center, where we have the start of the first set featuring Hell In A Bucket, Loser, Me And My Uncle> Big River , Ramble On Rose ,Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues. I, like everyone who was seeing shows at this time, loved it anytime Phil sang lead, but I was always particularly fond of his rendition of Tom Thumb's Blues. A great song, and a perfect fit for Phil.

Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes from the vault.

Tom Thumb's

Might be the only time I've heard Phil flub a lyric. Sure he didn't sing lead that often, but remembering the words never seemed to be an issue.

we are blessed

As much as I wish I could have seen the formative "Pig era" shows in person ( I was born in sept. '68 and saw my first show in '85) I am at the same time so grateful i can sit on my couch with 45 years upon my head and stream a ridiculously hot chunk of primo '74 GD directly from earbuds into my brain. And the man aint gonna catch me sneakin' a smoke in my basement either!!

I always wondered what and where Phil was referring to with "Foggy Bottom" in this particular version of Tom Thumbs Blues. Thanks for the info. !

The Cap Center shows were always excellent & just like every other venue the band played in the late '80s, there was always the chant for "we want phil, we want phil", I remember Phil saying a few times "how about we want Brent or we want Mickey?" good stuff. I've always dug (Just Like) Thom Thumb's Blues & in this one where Phil says "I'm going back to FOGGY BOTTOM (an area in DC where the State Dept/CIA are located)" was particularly cool. The Fresno "74 stuff from the Wall of Sound era are awesome too! The Wall Of Sound made for some incredible recordings!
