Grateful Dead

Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have some Grateful Dead music from 1978, 1983, and 1988.

Our first selection this week is the incredibly hot Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain from 9/2/78 at Giants Stadium, a jam that many people consider the best Scarlet>Fire of 1978, up there with 2/5/78. This show was just two weeks before Egypt, and the day after this show, much of the band and crew split for Egypt.

Next is the opening of 8/29/83 at Silva Hall in Eugene, OR, the first of six performances by the Grateful Dead at the Hult Center (three in 1983, three in 1984). From this great run’s opening, we have Shakedown Street ; New Minglewood Blues ; Friend Of The Devil ; Hell In A Bucket.

Lastly this week is the hot ending to the first night of a four night at Alpine on 6/19/88, featuring Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > I Need A Miracle > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away, Knockin' On Heaven's Door. While not common, in 1988 Dear Mr. Fantasy took the place of the Jerry ballad in the post-Drums sequence of some Dead shows, and as much as a Black Peter/Wharf Rat/Stella Blue/Morning Dew was missed at these shows, it was a nice surprise when this happened.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

that show at the Hult

I don't remember whether it was during Shakedown, but at one point the balcony was swaying, or more like bouncing, from the dancing. It was awesome and a little scary.

Oh Jerry...

Garcia's talents are on full display in this killer New Jersey Scarlet-Fire, which makes it even more of a shame that Jerry's smack habit is already having a negative effect on the music - the show is cut brutally short - two songs post drums - by Jerry having been scoped using during drums by hostile security. Oh! for those super-short drum breaks of 77!

Thanks to you David ~

Recall the beautiful sunny day out there in the Meadwlands.
Willie Nelson set up the bar for the boys and the day spun around.
Scarlet Fire lit up the whole place and rocked us into the melting sun.

Contact info for the Pyramid journey appeared on a very early jumbotron screen.
I believe it was all inclusive for 2500 which I did not have on me at the time.
Much of the show was also on the big-bulbed screen.
Kind of grainy but still an enhanced visual of music in play.

Peace ~ Marshun

Love this Alpine 88! I remember the show being great, but listening to this is mind blowing.
Thank you for the Summer tour 88 set! Please keep them coming!
